Radio Stations - Music Logs

Canberra is seemingly now as bad as Wollongong for ‘E-Wanging’. Time for Sumo FM to shake up the market.

Yeah it is a great track. Love the music on that track too, got a great sound like many of the songs on Graceland (Paul Simon recorded that album it in South Africa, it had an African influence in the music). If you never heard that album it is worth a listen.

Hence the South African tracks played afterward

Though I think the segue from ‘Sally Go Round The Roses’ to ‘Flower’ by Moby was the best of the night. Have a listen to the beginning of ‘Flower’ to see what I mean (and I didn’t realise the Roses>Flower segue until later!)

Let’s have a look at how the two compare. I’m taking an example hour from last week, as Hit were still on a different log to that of the metro stations, unlike this week.

First, Grant Broadcasters.

Hot 91.1 - Sunshine Coast, QLD
“Today’s Best Music”
Thursday 10th December 2020 - 1-2pm AEST

Avicii / Aloe Blacc - Wake Me Up
Dua Lipa / DaBaby - Levitating (Remix)
Hunters & Collectors - Throw Your Arms Around Me
Regard - Ride It
Ed Sheeran - Castle On The Hill
Beyonce Ft. Jay-Z - Crazy In Love
Shawn Mendes / Justin Bieber - Monster
Simple Plan - Christmas Everyday
Ava Max - Kings & Queens
Depeche Mode - Just Can’t Get Enough
Marshmello / Khalid - Silence
Guy Sebastian - Love On Display
Sam Feldt / Rani - Post Malone
The Weeknd - Save Your Tears

Now, regional Hit from the same equivalent hour.

Hit 101.3 - Central Coast, NSW
“Hits You Love from Then to Now”
Thursday 10th December 2020 - 1-2pm AEDT

Kygo / OneRepublic - Lose Somebody
Moloko - Sing It Back
Jason Derulo - Take You Dancing
Carly Rae Jepsen - Call Me Maybe
Duran Duran - Ordinary World
Ava Max - My Head & My Heart
Tom Novy - Your Body
Kim Wilde - Kids In America
Guy Sebastian - Love On Display
Jennifer Lopez - If You Had My Love
Fall Out Boy - Thnks Fr Th Mmrs
Miley Cyrus / Dua Lipa - Prisoner
Londonbeat - I’ve Been Thinking About You
Lady Gaga / Ariana Grande - Rain On Me

Of course, it’s worth noting that Grant’s Hot AC stations are competing with Hit in several markets around Australia, particularly in QLD, such as the Gold Coast, Cairns, Townsville & Mackay.

so then it sounds like hit is sounding like the grants?

Pretty much.

I’ll take the Hit log out of those two. The only song of note on the Grant log is Save Your Tears/The Weeknd. Love that one.

Which has been added to the Hit log, at least from what I heard on Summer nights last night on B105

Veering into mock thread territory, however: what I’d do if I was in charge of positioning stations for Grants on the east coast.

Cairns: Star 102.7 (CHR), 4CA (Classic Hits)
Townsville: Star 106.3 (CHR), Power 100 (Rock)
Mackay: Star 101.9 (CHR), 4MK (Classic Hits)

In each of these markets, Grants compete against a Hit station and a Triple M station. With the Hit stations skewing older (and noting the ex-Hit breakfast show jumping ship to Star in Mackay), I’d reposition these stations to be younger and hotter. The Townsville market will be interesting to keep an eye on with two rock stations, but I’d leave Power as is for now. The heritage AM stations continue to run their own race.

Rockhampton/Gladstone: 4RO (Talk/Classic Hits), 4CC (Classic Hits)
Bundaberg: Hitz93.9 (Hot AC), 4BU (Classic Hits)
Sunshine Coast: Hot 91.1 (Hot AC), Zinc 96.1 (Classic Hits)
Gold Coast: Hot Tomato (Hot AC)

No format changes to the above markets. Bundaberg is limited to competition from one SCA station (aside from any overspill from the Maryborough duopoly), the Sunshine Coast duopoly reduces overlap with EON’s duopoly, and Hot Tomato remains strong on the Gold Coast.

Ipswich: River 94.9 (Classic Hits)

A huge format hole in Ipswich and the wider region, especially on FM. Would take the same log as Zinc and the Queensland heritage AMs.

Muswellbrook: Power FM (Hot AC), 2NM (Classic Hits)
Wollongong: Wave FM (CHR)
Nowra: Power FM (Hot AC), 2ST (Classic Hits)
Bega: Power FM (Hot AC), 2EC (Classic Hits)

While Power FM in Nowra has typically been more “hot” musically, the comparison between the two markets is stark - Wollongong’s median age is 34 to Nowra’s 43 (as at 2016), and would allow the NSW Power FM stations to be consistent across the board.

Geelong: K rock (Rock), Bay 93.9 (Classic Hits)

What do we do with Geelong? For me, it’s worth going back to whatever heritage is left here. A station with ‘rock’ in the name that plays a godawful Hot AC playlist won’t fly here, and with only overspill from Triple M for competition. Take the same log from Townsville to do it on the cheap. There’s no classic hits competition on the FM band, so let Bay run its own race.

Ballarat: Power FM (CHR), 3BA (AC)
Maryborough/Bendigo: Gold Central Victoria (Classic Hits)

Don’t even need to elaborate on this one. Pretty self explanatory.

I agree.

I will add to that.

Darwin: Hot100 (Hot AC) and Mix 104.9 (Rock)
After living in Darwin for a fear few years I know Darwinian love their rock music.
They could even blow up both stations and relaunch Power100 (Rock) and Star 104.9 (Hot AC)

Rockhampton/Gladstone: 4RO (Classic Hits) and 4CC (Soft AC)
If 4CC was to ever convert to FM, this is what I would do. Star…(CHR). The same as the northern cities.
