Radio Stations - Music Logs

Soft AC could work in a number of markets, particularly the likes of Maryborough/Bendigo and Mildura - my aim was more to reshuffle what exists already rather than go too heavily into “what if” territory

Some great ideas there. River 94.9 would go great with classic hits on FM. That’s when the station (and Star 106.9/QFM) were at their best - when they filled a niche that wasn’t available on FM.

Ideally I’d go soft AC rather than classic hits for River though, but either would work. I think the only problem with classic hits is the 4KQ effect. It really is a powerhouse even though it’s on AM/DAB. River would somewhat be wedged between 4KQ and 4MMM.

I also think a proper rock station would work in Darwin, perhaps Power 104.9 combined with Hot 100 (Hot AC/CHR). Although personally I’d brand it Rock 104.9 and also use Rock 100.7 in Townsville too.

I heard they were going to call it Rock 100.7 before they changed it to Power100. I don’t know why they changed their mind.

Territory FM serve the rock community OK in Darwin. If I had a rock station up there I’d call it Croc Rock or Top Rock.

Croc Rock- Music With Bite
The Rock Of The Top End.

What Station are you on @dxnerd? Would love to hear the show live! (providing they stream?)

Braidwood FM and yes, we do stream. I’m on 1900-2100 on Tuesday nights, plus I do a countdown show on Wednesday’s at 1300.

You can actually ‘listen again’ to the show by joining the Facebook group; the boss does not want the show links public though, which is why I don’t post them directly on here.

Cool, I’ll give it a listen. Really love some of your music logs, so different:)

Listened to the show on demand from the facebook group… I love it… Old School sounding radio in the modern era… you sir are a dying breed of quality broadcaster

Cheers- that’s actually one of the best compliments I could hope to receive. I hope to sound as good as the old FM104/EON jocks or the current Radio Caroline ones, though I’m a long way from that level of fluency at present.

BTW- the Christmas show was obviously not representative of the normal show; I have posted my ‘normal’ shows above for your perusal.

Make sure you listen to a few other shows in the same vain; The Mechie Show on 2BBB, Paul’s Powerzone on Mixcloud and Vinyl Shop Valves/Inphase on SWR/Mixcloud are a few suggestions. Plenty of quality on community radio if you know where to look.

A log today from Triple M Melbourne. The playlist in summer seems different to how it is during the year. It appears that the Sydney and Melbourne playlists today are the same, with the Brisbane playlist one hour behind Sydney and Melbourne (of course due to no daylight savings for QLD).

I’ve just found some old logs that I’ve done over on DTV Forums back in the day.

The following ones are for WSFM in Sydney & Gold 104.3 in Melbourne, as well as for Vega (now Smooth) from nearly 14 years ago.

Here they are.

101.7 WSFM - Sydney, NSW
"Good Times & Great Classic Hits"
Thursday 1st February 2007 - 1-2pm AEDT

“Oh No, Not You Again” Australian Crawl (you’d hardly hear that on Sydney FM radio these days)
“Sweet Home Alabama” Lynyrd Skynyrd (ditto to the above, in fact you’d more likely hear “All Summer Long” than the original that it sampled from)
“Bette Davis Eyes” Kim Carnes
“Baby I Need Your Loving” Four Tops
“Don’t Change” INXS
“Angie” Rolling Stones
“Always The Sun” The Stranglers
“Oliver’s Army” Elvis Costello & The Attractions
“All I Need Is A Miracle” Mike & The Mechanics
“I Will Survive” Gloria Gaynor
“Slippin’ Away” Max Merritt & The Meteors

Gold 104.3 - Melbourne, VIC
"Good Times & Great Classic Hits"
Thursday 1st February 2007 - 1-2pm AEDT

“Sultans Of Swing” Dire Straits
“Tainted Love” Soft Cell
“Sorrow” David Bowie
“Jump” Van Halen
“I’m A Believer” The Monkees (the Smash Mouth cover would more likely get airplay these days)
“Walking On The Moon” The Police
“Blinded By The Light (Album Version)” Manfred Mann’s Earth Band
“Who Can It Be Now?” Men At Work
“We Are Family” Sister Sledge
“She’s So High” Tal Bachman
“Rock & Roll All Nite” Kiss
“Don’t Give Up” Peter Gabriel & Kate Bush

Vega 95.3 - Sydney, NSW/Vega 91.5 - Melbourne, VIC (now Smooth FM)
"70s, 80s & The Best New Songs"
Thursday 1st February 2007 - 1-2pm AEDT

“It Must Be Love” Madness
“Sarah” Eskimo Joe
“Moondance” Van Morrison
“Love Song” Amiel
“Let’s Dance (Album Version)” David Bowie (Vega played the album version, which clocked in at 7:37)
“Can’t Get Enough” Bad Company
“Great Southern Land” Icehouse
“Not Ready To Make Nice” Dixie Chicks (they now simply call themselves The Chicks)
“Sexual Healing” Marvin Gaye
“Make Me Smile” Steve Harley & Cockney Rebel (another song you’d hardly hear on Sydney FM radio these days)
“Only To Be With You” Roachford
“Highway To Hell” AC/DC
“Everything I’m Not” The Veronicas

So, this gives us an idea on what some of the adult commercial FM stations in Sydney & Melbourne were sounding like back then.

I like the Vega list if only because it’s a bit different.

I agree. Wonder how the Vega would rate in 2021

Awesome pick of songs there mate. :+1:

Yeah I wonder that too. You can see they were trying to do a BBC R2. Maybe it just needed more time.

I didn’t know that Gold were playing 90’s songs (a song that was less than 10 years old as well!) as early as 2007. She’s So High still gets flogged 14 years later, with no signs of slowing.
