Radio Data System (RDS)

I’d be interested to know what their PI code is, as when I was in Tamworth a month or so, my car radio didn’t display any RDS on 92.9.

But then my car is a Ford which runs the SYNC3 infotainment system, which is notorious for not displaying RDS where the PI code does not conform to standards. So it may be why - or maybe it’s on for less than a month.

That was me and good to know I wasn’t seeing things (it was a long day’s driving)!

Found an old clunker machine - was able to get a little bit of data before the battery died

PI: 2340 (also got 2815, but I suspect this was a decode error)
PS: 92.9 TMW
RT: Tamworth’s Widest Variety of Music
RT: JB for Breakfast 6am-10am

Couldnt get 96.3 from my location

96.3 Is the Translator for the Community Station 88.9 (2YOU FM)

Yep - I’m able to get it in my car in Tamworth, but not from my hastily-built SDR setup

Well done. If this is a Windows PC & battery is okay & if it has enough grunt with SDR# software you can extract more RDS info with addition of RDS Spy & VB Cable (ASIO/HiFi version)
HIFI-Cable & ASIO Bridge - VB Audio Software,

Must be that version of VB Cable else decodes are poor. I provided @Moe with details, I think in this forum sometime earlier this year. Refer to it if you need more info.

SDR Console provides more RDS info ‘out of the box’ than does SDR#, like PTY, CT group codes etc. Try for 0% BER to avoid false Group codes & corrupted decodes etc.

I’d say PI code for 92.9 of 2340 is correct as I noted it’s also the Postcode for Tamworth. Thanks for posting

It’s a great spot and was chosen for off air reception of Brisbane TV for RTN-8 prior to microwave links to see how TV was done.

Nobody has mentioned this so I will

Todays Country 94.1 Gosford have recently made some changes to their RDS.

Their dynamic PS has improved somewhat.
Gone is:
Todays
Country
94.1 -
This is
Where
Country
Lives!

Replaced with:
Todays
Country
94.1

Their RT changed from:
Todays Country 94.1 - This is Where Country Lives!
To new: Todays Country

Small blessings for an improvement to PS length I guess.

Thanks, I tuned in briefly last night and hadn’t noticed. Was too busy trying to null in Pulse with the ducting that was about.

Agree, an improvement on the previous RDS implementation but would prefer a static PS, they can just put the fuller name on the RT line.

Would something like “TC 94.1” work OK as a static PS?

That’s probably what I would do.

A reminder with the approaching SpE dx season & more expected coastal Tropo DX, now is a good time for members to consider updating our Media Spy Australian RDS List (link at top of this list - Google Sheets). Taking a recent look at the list I can see Tasmania is well overdue for an update. PI codes &/or PTY for Devonport, Launceston, Queenstown & Scottsdale required.
In NSW; PI & PTY codes for Bega, Coffs Harbour, Cooma, Kempsey & other markets missing.

Other bits & pieces missing in other states & markets too. I wonder if anyone has PI codes for 105.7 & 107.3 Gold Coast?

PI codes are the first piece of RDS data to decode with weaker signals & are very helpful in the ID process when dxing.

Does anyone know what these peaks around 57 kHz (where RDS usually is) on the MPX spectrum of 2MCR are? Is it just an RDS carrier (but without any RDS data)?

Quite possibly as 2MCR has used RDS in the past.

There was a station around Tamworth that is using “#1 Music” as it’s PS and Pop as it’s PTY. Unfortunately I don’t remember exactly what frequency it was on. Whichever station takes the networked Nova afternoon show.

That would be FM92.9, who takes Kate, Tim & Joel (previously Kate, Tim & Marty) on weekday afternoons.

Very interesting that you spotted this. I was wondering earlier if this might have been from interference at my location, but obviously not if you are capturing the same unique trait of 2MCR’s MPX signal. I’ve been witnessing this odd double sharp peak ‘around’ 57kHz from 2MCR for most of this year. This MPX trait wasn’t evident last year from 2MCR.
In a way it makes 2MCR easy to ID from a DXer with an SDR, as it’s unique to them (re look at their MPX signal with that double sharp peak around 57kHz).

Also it’s not an RDS 57kHz subcarrier.

Yes 2MCR did have RDS for a brief stint a couple of years ago, but it had the usual
57kHz subcarrier, not what we are witnessing now.

Anyway congrats on the observation, might help someone else away from Sydney region ID the station in future, re dx just from observance of the MPX spectrum.

There’s something rather odd with 105.3 NEW FM Newcastle’s RDS PS.

With RDS Spy the PS looks normal displaying NEWFM
With just SDR# the NE part of NEWFM flashes.
I wonder if the NEW FM tech has programmed the PS to be Dynamic instead of Static?
Does anyone in Newcastle experience anything odd with the PS display in their car radio’s or other RDS capable radios for NEW FM?
They also use AF Method B for 105.3 directed to same frequency.

NEW FM also recently made another recent change with their RDS changing the PI code from A00A to 2053

Hit 106.9, Triple M 102.9 & 99.7 Rhema FM using RT+, the later only for programs from what I have seen. Rhema has a PI of 2304 - their studio postcode & also have plenty of RT messages.

BTW I don’t see any Dynamic PS for 2NUR. Looks to be static with RDS Spy.
Lots of other Newy RDS updates on The Aussie RDS List - enjoy.

Yes, my car radio will sometimes display WFM instead of NEWFM.

So your explanation makes perfect sense then.

And 2NUR thankfully stopped using Dynamic PS a few months ago.

Aha…thanks for that. :+1: Let’s see if we can get that corrected.

@gordo92 Do you think you can spare a moment to contact your colleague at NEW FM or access the site remotely & have the RDS encoder software reconfigured to display static PS?
It’s (I believe) been incorrectly set to dynamic & causing the PS display to alternate between WFM & NEWFM instead of the full static NEWFM. I’m sure the NEWFM listeners with RDS would appreciate the fix. Thanks
