Radio Data System (RDS)

Just when we thought everything was settled over here in WA. It seems that Lancerlin HITS 102.9 and MMM 104.5 have decided to flip freq I just heard them today and MMM is now 102.9 HITS is 104.5 both looked to have turned off RDS. Nothing is mentioned on either Stations Website. Is this their way of controlling the fact that both stations are now owned by the Seven News Media and it thus creates a monopoly in the same listening area

Is there possibly a fault that might have caused both of these things to happen?

Seems illogical to do so otherwise?

I think I may have worked it out. Looking at the ACMA FM database 6FMS are Remote Site for MMM WA. 6SAT are remote sites for HITS WA

MMM /6FMS have the liscence for 102.9 even though HITS were moved there. 6SAT have the liscence for 104.5 though MMM moved there

I reckon the error was discoovered and hence the freq flip probebly cheaper to swap freq then apply for new liscences.

FMS and SAT areovt subsadiesd low power liscences offered to local coumcils for around $20k to allow them to have comercial FM Transmitters.

They also can have Digital TV. it is all part of VAST i am not sure if it is in the same package.

Thats my theory and I am sticking with it he he

I actually thought it was the other way around but I could be wrong! ie.6FMS was/is WAFM/Red/Hit and 6SAT Spirit/Triple M.

And that when I was in Walpole last month, 102.9 is 6FMS and was airing the Hit feed.

You are correct.

OK I admit defeat. you are correct.

Yes I need to completely redo my database of regional stations.

Well that thoeroy is gone about Lancerlin. I have NO idea why they flipped

Back into my cave I go, I will come out in summer when conditions are better and I can actiually hear these stations.

6FMS is Hits 6SAT is MMM 6FMS is Hits 6SAT is MMM 6FMS is Hits 6SAT is MMM 6FMS is Hits 6SAT is MMM

I hope I do not forget

I recall a few years ago, Triple M and FOX in Melbourne were accidentally broadcast on the opposite frequencies for a short period of time (ie 101.9 was 3MMM and 105.1 was 3FOX).

Could have been some kind of unintentional switching issue like that?

This appeared on my car radio today when parked listening to 2NUR FM.

A song was playing and it continued to play, no ‘Traffic Announcement’ audio or anything else appeared.

I’ve had my car for nearly 4 years and it’s the first time I’ve seen that appear. Quite odd.

Can you provide us with an Extended RDS screen capture with your TEF of 2NUR?

2NUR didn’t have any RDS TA or TP flags active when last noted (last year).

Fresh one attached, taken moments ago. .

TP flag not lit up (you can just see the provision for the flag under the “ER” in “Errors” ), so must have been an erroneous decode.

Highland FM has now switched to a scrolling/dynamic RDS PS of HighlandFM.

Horrid! Send them an email to change it back.

Ohh so so wrong, an RDS encoder should not even allow it

However it is HUGE method used in the US :face_vomiting:

So true.

BTW Highland have changed their RT slightly & changed their PTY from Varied to ‘Pop Music’ & removed the unused PTYN (Group Code 10A). Now just 0A & 2A group codes. Decoder ID now has Stereo Flag on; DI [1] was [0].

In Sydney for a few nights.

The Long PS on Northside 99.3 has gone kaput.

And VOX-FM Wollongong have removed the 2 callsign prefix in its RDS

I’ll update the worksheet

Thanks for that. A couple of oddities actually;

An Extended ASCII code of 255 that gives a non-breaking space for the LPS blank display

& now transmitting Group Code 11A, which is usually used for RT+, but no accompanying Group 3A :face_with_diagonal_mouth:

Who knows what has occurred. :person_shrugging: Perhaps tech work incomplete or someone tinkering or…?

UPDATE: It also appears that Northside Radio have also added SONG TITLE & ARTIST information to their RT listening to their Armenian program with RT messages now updating every 3 minutes (ex 6 minutes).

And another update for them, they have also updated their station logo.

The station is also on a donation drive.

UPDATE 2: Group 3A has now been added & RT+ is now functional on Northside Radio.

98.9 8ABCRR Adelaide River has RDS.

PS=ABCLocal

PI=846A

Above noted in the wee small hours overnight.

Other Adelaide River & Bathurst Is FM DX noted too. Thought the dx would have been better later as predicted by the Hepburn tropo maps, but not the case at all.
