Radio Data System (RDS)

Perhaps (?) for 106.1 & I pondered that too, but then that leaves 107.7 as another location mystery & that location could have also had 106.1 with RDS.:person_shrugging:

You’re right.. had forgotten Katherine still has RN on AM…

I’d say most likely pine creek, within minutes of getting these at RDS level 106.1 was replaced by ABC Katherine which doesnt have RDS.

I suppose there’s not much to receive between Katherine and Broken Hill on the Asia to Melbourne flight path. Tennant Creek and maybe Birdsville only; the latter didn’t have RDS when I picked it up in summer.

Theres lots of stuff on the band until about Broken Hill then it really drops off. North of there you get the FMs for ~500km, i tuned off Hill 96.5 around Innamincka SA since it was getting fairly weak.

Around here I switched to Triple J 104.5 Moomba which lasted a fair while for how low power it is (107.7 was also on air), Mono audio no rds on both.

Switched over to JJJ 102.9 from birdsville after that, surprisingly had stereo active, SBS and the ABCs were also on air. No rds noted from any of them either.

After Birdsville there is a big gap in signal, around 1h of almost nothing on the fm band other than the occasional extremely weak abc signal in the top end of the FM band. Then Mt Isa FMs come in, they never got too strong, lingering around just below rds levels for 30 mins or so.

On the way back I took a different path, pretty much followed the A87 highway all the way to Tennant Creek before turning to fly east. Flow 100.5 seemed to be off air in Tennant Creek, everything else was on but lacked RDS. Vision christian radio 104.5 lasted the longest. Also had some hints of alice springs around Tennant Creek too. Weak and no RDS however.

Some ones I noted which are not listed on ACMA:

106.7 ABC talk near birdsville
101.7 Triple J near Elliot NT
106.9 Triple J near Numbulwar

The flight attendants didnt seem to care about the radio so i was able to listen to it the entire time which was lucky.

106.1 (ABCRR) and 107.7 (ABCRN) are the usual frequency pair in the very remote regions. JJJ Birdsville is a good signal and was strongly received via Es. Thanks for the report.

The most common pairing I think. They’re everywhere.

A fair few 105.9/107.5 pairings as well, but yes 106.1/107.7 by far the most common in the outback regions.

And 105.7 & 107.3 as well.

It might just be my reception - but it seems like RDS on ABC RN 104.3 has dropped off?

Triple J and Classic still have it:

Also, just noticed, ABC News SW Slopes seems to have added a regional PI of 23F5:

At least it seems there is someone still making changes to the ABC RDS’s regionally (hopefully). Or maybe this was Andy’s last one before he sadly passed…

Spelling mistakes are (thankfully) uncommon re RDS song info, but this one tonight caught my eye (should be ‘Easton’).

I would have thought they’d extract it from Gracenote or another source?

I am getting Central Tablelands well enough tonight for RDS… got it on 102.7 Classic, but not 104.3 RN.

But I did notice 104.3 now has a stereo pilot, not seen that before. Maybe connected to the RDS issue somehow?

I noticed the stereo pilot when I took my screenshot also, though I wasn’t sure if it was there before so didn’t mention it - but that’s a good point. Maybe something changed at the TX site.

Stations mostly just use the data from their automation system (with some tricks to clean it up). You can use a third party database, but then you start getting into the weeds trying to match the exact version of the song.
