Radio Data System (RDS)

I’ll double check tonight

I very much doubt that only bendigo has the equipment to produce RDS in Victoria. I assume that most of the high power ones are just waiting for someone to switch it on, especially since many of them are included in the AF of Portland, Mt Gambier and Bendigo.

Yes it does

I’m thinking the same thing. The tech people from BAI would have the answers.

You’d be correct in saying it isn’t, Mount Dundas I’m fairly sure has RDS enabled on some of the services - I’ve had ABC Classic with RDS from there in recent times. Also considering the startup dates of the other ABCRR, Classic and JJJ sites, it would be unlikely this is the case in that both Bendigo and Mt Dundas are the only two capable in regional Victoria.

You would think Latrobe Valley (Mount Tassie) would be RDS capable given that it had to be totally replaced in 2009 due to destruction in the Black Saturday fires. AFAIK there is still no RDS on it.

As of Monday (9/3), driving through Gippsland - nothing for 100.7 (GI-FM) or 96.7 (Triple J)

In Melbourne for a few nights. Staying at Southbank, I am getting the following well enough to say I’d be pretty confident in saying still no RDS - 3PVR Plenty Valley, 3WYN Werribee, 3JOY Melb City or any of the Ballarat ABCs from Warrenheip or Lookout Hill as they are all about 25 dbuv or better.

But I have RDS on 98.9 3NOW Broadmeadows so looks like they’ve fixed what appeared to be a low input level for me previously.

It was at Boyd St Bowen Hills.
The moneybox on the hill at Albion didn’t have line of sight to St Helena, so we had a 850mhz repeater at Boyd st which then shot out to the island.
Used TFT links, had the 4 channel digital interface also so on channel 3 we sent DTMF to the island for fast transmitter commands from the workshop rack.

When I was last down there Joy had it intermittently - sometimes it’d be on and boom in, others it just wouldn’t be there. Not sure why.

Never seen sign of RDS on Wyn or PVR either. Same for Golden Days Radio from Caulfield on 95.7, don’t think they’ve ever had it.

Friend found this on their travels to the lower south west of WA in Denmark west of Albany

Community station 99.7 DEN FM now RDS. I ADDED what I could to the ONLINE RDS Database. Hopefully I didn’t stuff it up. I could not find any information on the ACMA FM Frequency or/and Location database. I assume it a LPOC licence. Their website shows a fair bit of information https://www.denmarkfm.com.au/

Thanks David H for finding this station update

This might be the worst dynamic PS i’ve ever seen… so glad Australian stations mostly use static PS

(video from an american FMDX webserver)

I think a lot of American RDSs are like that because some older cars will only display the PS line, not both the PS and RT lines like most Australian RDS equipped radios do. Agree it makes it VERY hard to read.

Anecdotally, car manufacturers hate Dynamic PS. Far fewer new cars support PS than RT now, at least in the US.

Yes, the current generation of Toyotas (and I think VW as well) use Gracenote to populate PS info (thus which also includes AM and non RDS FM stations).

But have noted it sometimes populates the wrong station’s info. Only the RT line from native RDS is used in this display.

Honestly in my RAV4 I love the feature. Plus the internet radio linking. Have to pay $6 a month for Toyota connected services(free for first 3 years) (also gives you Spotify built in)but when you leave a stations broadcast area it kicks in the stream so you can keep enjoying it. Great feature. Also gives you tunein/iHeart capability (RIP SCA). To me it beats CarPlay, especially when leaving my new home in Braidwood, and loose 2BRW @dxnerd makes me smile when going south

2HD 97.5 Port Stephens finally has its RDS back! Looks to be the same as it was before.
