Radio Data System (RDS)

New RDS in Augusta WA.

Good one!

I’m guessing 98.3 is missing the last two characters as there is enough room for ABCLocal as some of the other ones are done?

Yes I think so. With static RT message - ABC South West WA. This might be one you’ll confirm further next month

Yes! Weather permitting, I hope to get down to Cape Leeuwin before heading inland and across down to Albany via Nannup and Pemberton.

Be interested to see what RDS Nannup and Pemberton are putting out (if any). Nothing on the RDS worksheet for those locations.

That sounds like my kind of getaway. It’s been about 5 years since I’ve been down that way, so we need an update.

From memory, Nannup is self-help so may not be getting the BAI RDS treatment. And Pemberton 97.3 was mono, left over from its 6FMS days, but definitely 6BET feed now.

Enjoy the completely empty FM dial between towns down there!

ABC Gold Coast FM outlets have now been brought in line with the recent ABC RDS updates. PI changes for all services, PTY changes for ABC NEWS and triple j along with an AF update for triple j.

Here’s hoping ABC Brisbane (and other capital/big city) FM transmitters are updated also for complete car radio AF/PTY roaming :crossed_fingers: .

It certainly appears that RDS on the two SCA services in Lancelin, WA (Hit/Triple M) have been switched off with tropo currently strong enough for sufficient signal strength for an RDS decode at the Perth webserver if RDS was active.

I wondered if that 97.3 Pemberton was still on air. It only covered about 10 km around the town in 2001 back in the Red FM (6FMS) days and yes, it was mono from memory.

There was another Red FM tx at Hyden (Wave Rock) on 102.1 in 2001. Someone in Perth reported a mystery Double J relay on that frequency the other day when tropo was big to the east…not sure if that was from Hyden or not. There’s nothing currently listed for Hyden on 102.1 but my memory is clear as day. Could it have been a pirate Red FM relay?

Your memory is better than mine! The god squad where definitely on air, plus some commercials, don’t recall much more than that. I was in Hyden just after the analogue TV shutdown. The Wave Rock Caravan Park had 3 analogue self-help TV stations. The equipment racks where in view right behind the check-in counter. They where still broadcasting after the shutdown, but just a blank screen. Similarly in Dalwalinu on the way to Hyden, the ABC thier was on-air still but blank screen.

You’ve reminded of another pirate, 50km south of Hyden in Varley. 104.3 was thier frequency and listed in the bushfire frequency guide. I’ve not heard this station the summer but previous years was broadcasting triple J, triple J+3 hours, Hit WA and triple M WA. The program even changed while I was listening. Rebels! They may be using 102.1 now and doing Double J?? 102.1 blocked for me in Bunbury.

I think so Oz. Lancelin looks to have dipped out in an otherwise very well executed Perth FM replan. I noted the stereo light is still on, but using headphones, the content is not genuine stereo. Nearby Jurien bay 103.1 and 104.7 are FM stereo, though not capital city seperation and quality.

There is still some quiet crosstalk on the new Lancelin stations, not as bad as the old frequencies.

The Hyden 102.1 lasted about 20 km out of town from memory (going back towards Perth) so was probably in the town itself rather than at the Wave Rock resort. I have not been back there since so can’t comment on what’s on air there these days!

The RDS PI Code for ABC NewsRadio Wollongong has changed from 226C to new 22F5.

It’s been 22F5 for at least 10 days now, I think: Radio Data System (RDS) - #5790 by tvcl

Thanks. Playing catch-up. Probably also been a heap of AF & PI code changes across the various earlier reported new ABC RDS activations too. Problem is the great tropo dx we had on the NSW coast some 4-6 weeks ago to report & note these changes has disappeared.

Need more observations from Lismore to Taree & Bega to Batemans Bay & inland areas of NSW again.

Batemans Bay has been coming in fairly often with RDS for me, even with the 2RPH cochanneling. It’s definitely 22F5 also.

Is it safe to say that the ABC sites that don’t have RDS currently are likely those that don’t have the equipment to generate it? It does seem quite hit and miss as to which ones do and don’t have it running.

Yes I think so.. I recall Parex11 saying that he thinks 75% of ABC sites are RDS capable. So that probably lines up with what we are seeing here (most in NSW have it, but some don’t, like Gosford and Port Stephens).

There seem to be a few more in QLD that don’t as well, Darling Downs, Sunshine Coast, Gympie, Wide Bay, Rockhampton.

NewsRadio and JJJ at Soma (Tamworth) don’t have rds yet, but RN does from the same site

Does Classic FM on 103.1 have it?

If not, which would be interesting as I recall Classic and RN both launched at the same time around 1992-93 thus I would assume be running the same type of equipment. And RN is one of the older stations (older than JJJ and News).
