It means Studio Transmitter Link STL (In most cases in the 800mhz or 1.5 Gigahertz ranges (We have one of each at 2VM/NOW FM)

Of course I know what it stands for. But STL is a generic term that could be IP codec, microwave or satellite link, amongst others. I wanted to know what specific technology the original poster was referring to.
When I said STL, I was certainly thinking direct microwave link from the mountain top to the studio.
However, I understand how some on here might consider Satellite, DVN, Fibre, codecâs or in-band-links could be considered STLâs.
For this discussion I was talking microwave radio.

I saw this this afternoon⌠This takes breaking the RDS standard to a new level!
With most newish cars, the RDS will traverse the cars BUS.. When you break standards, sometimes bad things happen⌠like cars going into limp/safe mode.
At the very least its flooding the BUS with the PS updating every 1/2 sec
The PS(Program Service Name) field is limited to 8 characters. Some encoder units like the DEVAâs have the ability to scroll longer text if you want to show the full name of the station and it doesnât fit.

Itâs called Dynamic PS and almost every RDS encoder supports it. It your encoder doesnât, youâll have trouble selling into the US where a lot of broadcasters insist on doing this.
Dynamic PS is a violation of the RDS standards, but in the US they have âRBDSâ which is a variant of RDS. The NRSC guidelines donât strictly forbid Dynamic PS, but the latest version of the guidelines do discourage it.
Some RDS encoders automatically enable DPS if you enter more than 8chars into the PS textbox. This is usually how Australian stations end up enabling it.

This is a thing? We talking about the CAN BUS? Thats something no outside factors should be able to interfere with let alone some radio station, especially as Mix and MMM are usually the traffic providers for car nav systems!
I remember reading somewhere that something like that happened to Mazdas in the Seattle area once. Bricked the cars and their screens.
Surely these days there is some protections against that.
Has anyone seen this on another receiver? We are in a change freeze and nobody has changed anything, and our monitoring in the office is all correct.
Maybe reboot the receiver/server you are using for this?

Yes.. Its already happened here but got covered up.
I dont want to say too much, but it happened in Adelaide and invovled DAB+
It was the car manufacture that found the issue after a heap of cars kept requiring tow trucks after going into limp mode.
Traffic services have nothing to worry about because they dont break standards!

Yeah I can confirm with a friend in Perth its happening on his Sony radio on RDS, DAB+ unaffected. Actually slows down the working of the radio he said. And a fellow tech friend of mine is saying his car will freeze passing these stations for a brief seconds.

I have updated the name of 96FM.png logo to GOLD96FM.png to reflect the RDS change. This has resolved the hit and miss loading of the logo I was getting on my webservers when on 96.1 as the logo name has to match the RDS to work correctly I suspect I might have to do the same for 102.9 and 104.5 when they finally start full time transition.
I normally donât have this issue but a couple of times the logos wonât load or are spasmodic and changing the file name fixes it.
If you are seeing issues with RDS decode on my 2nd South server this may be due partially to the direction the antenna is pointing, if pointed south east it is 75deg south of the Perth main Tx site in Bickley and besides signal reduction there could be reflection occurring causing data or RDS issue. Not always the cause but may contribute to the problem
If the antenna is pointed in another direction I will put it in the rolling text message at the top

Sounds about right.. as the radio notices the change of PS (Group 0A/B sent every 1/4, 1/2 sec) it sends that data to the CANBUS for display on the dash. Busying the CANBUS could cause a heap of problems with the cars engine management.
It was illegal in some Europe countries in the early 2000âs as it deemed to be a distraction to the driver.
If you find yourself setting up some RDS.. Dont be a numpty and put Dynamic PS on it⌠Just DONT
