Radio Data System (RDS)

It’s gone for me too

Likely some kind of hardware issue. They’ve also lost their Stereo Pilot carrier.

In other RDS news; I noted that 93.7 Nova in Perth have foolishly done
away with RT A/B flag message switching as they’ve done in Sydney & Melbourne.

Does anyone think 88.9 Radio Skid Row’s signal is now stronger?
RDS decoding is better.

For the Faith stations with FA1F PI codes, the problem is caused by them being only 1 watt - that causes the algorithm in the webserver to score them all the same, no matter what the distance, so it just selects whichever it matches first in the dataset. It seems like the record ordering in FMList must have changed and affected which one gets selected.

I’m going to have to try and figure out how to fix this - it only happens with 1W stations, anything more powerful works fine!

Now back with RDS, for those that can decode it with FBi’s ambivalent choice of 0000 PI code.
Stereo Pilot returned too

Currently in Hawaii en route to Vegas for the NRL games this weekend.

Similar to what I saw in San Francisco last year, a lot of Dynamic PS here too, but at least the RT field has all the info in a easier to read form in most cases.

Lucky you! Or maybe not so much given you have to play Penrith

Some fortuitous tropo reception in the southwest of Victoria this morning brought some FM DX to the Melb FM DX webservers.

Noted from DX reception of 100.1 5GTR that it has changed its RDS PI code from a troublesome 0005 to a better (new) PI code of: 5001. Unfortunately this PI code is also used by 92.7 Fresh FM, Adelaide so perhaps some station switching issues for travellers between Adelaide & Mt Gambier.

Though unlikely given 5GTR is only 1kw and its signal barely makes it to Millicent when i was there in 2022.

From New Orleans

How not to do RDS 101 - have advertising pollute both the PS and RT fields.

Didn’t see any song or station info for the time I was tuned in - a minute or so - and this was when a song was playing.

Yuk.

An interesting RDS I came across on my travels this afternoon- 2TVR Sounds of the Mountains correctly had “2TVR” as their RDS PS label at one stage, which then gave way a few minutes later to the below RDS of “Clapton”. Picture is from the 94.3 Gundagai transmitter but the same RDS was going out on all transmitters.

Sounds like they’re using Dynamic PS and must have been playing a Eric or Richard Clapton song at one point? Probably also something not right if only changing text once every couple of minutes.

This appears normal for them. IIRC they display 2TVR for some extended time on the PS & then display sponsor info & song info.

2BBB also has dynamic PS where they display Triple B for an extended time & then briefly the two frequencies.

Dynamic PS needs to be switched off. 2TVR I think has the worst Dynamic PS in the country. :slightly_frowning_face:

106.1 Classic FM in Brisbane has changed temporarily to ABC Local radio. However, the RDS is still keeping track of the music on FM Classic.

RT is now “Cyclone Alfred coverage from Local Radio Brisbane”

Are they play any music and is it in full stereo?

Yes - 106.1 is full stereo and slightly higher fidelity sound than any other local radio FM station.

Possibly due to less processing of the audio. Not messing with the equalisation and squashing the crap out of it like some stations do.

Only audio adjustment between Source and transmission is a Final limiter to stop over deviation
No AGC and no multi band processing

Perhaps NSW Govt sponsored to try and make Sydney the biggest city in the country again?
