Radio Data System (RDS)

I can drive from Sydney to Brisbane now & don’t have to retune Triple J. I don’t tune in, in the first place.

Yes that would be my idea of torture personally.

All ABC Mt Nardi services now have RDS.

ABC LR

The ever annoying scrolling: ABC Classic FM

triple j

ABC RN

ABC NEWS

At last, all ABC services in a market have RDS. Only 30 odd years overdue.

I was checking last week, alas early, none yesterday and finally jackpot today.

All five services mention Northern Rivers in the RT, very helpful to know where the signal is from/intended for.

92, you’ve been there for history being made for RDS from Mt Nardi for both Triple Z commercial and now ABC.

If i were in charge of RDS at the ABC, i would use

ABCLocal (no room for a space sadly since it’s 8 character limited)
ABC RN
Classic (static)
triple j
ABC News

Reception with RDS is challenging at my location because all the frequencies are co-channeled with other strong semi locals. There were some that decoded just now.

Thanks for that. :+1:

Yeah. Would like to see the Dynamic PS of Classic FM removed too - not recommended in RDS standard.

One other flag that is raised is that of the PI code of ABC RN Lismore 296A, there is a potential event for unwanted station switch that could occur with another station not too far away.

The PI code on that changed today as 2D5F is also used by 107.7 Brisbane, and with the time difference the switching was causing a problem. Was an issue driving to the Gold Coast this morning but fixed by this afternoon.

Funny to hear those who can’t stand the thought of listening to triple j for the Sydney → Brisbane drive, I do it every year for the Christmas period, it’s kinda impressive only needing to re-tune 4 times.

RE RDS on 96.1 triple j Northern Rivers, I wonder if there’ll be issues with receivers switching frequencies and out of sync. audio due to the time delay with QLD Txs. Understand they probably haven’t configured AF, but my cars tuner will happily switch if just the PS is identical, even if AF data is missing, for example.

Suppose it’s unlikely to eventuate until 97.7 has it added. Thought you can receive 96.1 in metropolitan Brisbane.

Yeah, my car radio seems to do it via the PI code. So will now switch from 107.7 to 103.3 Southern Downs without an issue despite no AF set up, and this morning did the awkward switch between 107.7 and 96.1 until that was resolved, as it didn’t work this afternoon.

I can decode all the Mt Nardi ABCs here in western Brisbane this evening. Got to say it’s pretty cool to see.

Mt Nardi Classic appears static on a Sony XDR-P1DBP this evening.

ABC Fine Music could be truncated to ABC Fine, time for a brand refresh and pick a battle with the community stations that use this non trademarked descriptor.

For 94.5 which is displaying as ABC LR, the Radio Text option is interesting as currently: ABC Local Radio Northern Rivers.

Historic call sign is 2NR which powers on today at Lawrence on the Clarence River, AM 738. When the ABC thought it’d be trendy to ignore its heritage and adopt city/region names, the station became (and still is) ABC North Coast.

Wonder if that’ll be updated? I prefer Northern Rivers as there’s only one Northern Rivers region yet many North Coasts in Australia.

Forgot to mention, earlier this evening, RDS triple j and RT of ‘Triple J Gold Coast - We love music’ briefly appeared and then off before I could check the other services.

The Gold Coast is one of a handful of regions where the main TX site has all five services on FM. Even rarer that all five are of equal strength (PNN often a compromised allocation simply to reach the parliamentary target of 10 000 or whatever that threshold/promise was?

Hopefully all will be on permanently soon.

Could I be as optimistic of DAB+ installed and commissioned for the Lower Beechmont site? Hope so.

Mount Ulandra (Wagga) could be the next market to get RDS as all are on FM there. I’m in the prime position for that one should it occur.

CHY FM playing with their RDS this morning.

I didn’t have time to post this yesterday, but sometime over the past 6 weeks MIX 106.3 Canberra decided to change their RDS PI code from 171B to new 1063. That’s the only change I can see from the DX RDS capture.

I presume their Tuggeranong relay on 107.1 followed suit with the PI code change, but I have no idea as I’ve never received any of the Tuggeranong FM outlets, let alone their RDS.

Bit of news from WA. Strong signal from Hit Merredin this morning…

Not sure if this is new, of just so strong this morning.
Then 100.3 Margaret River yesterday morning. RDS data an exact copy of Hit95.7 Bunbury.

98.5 Perth changes -
CAPS LOCK on for PS and now playing messages.
Group 4A added for time and date, 4 minutes fast
Group 10A added for PTYN. I’ll fire up RDS SPY later to extract the text.
PTY changed to NEWS, was VARIED.

Update - PS back to Sonshine and time now 4 hours fast, not 4 minutes. Must be a work in progress - I recall hearing their 850mhz STL on longer has line is sight and was suffering interference. Might be a raft of upgrades going on at the station at the moment.
