Landmark investigation into missing con artist Melissa Caddick launched by The Sydney Morning Herald and 60 Minutes

The extraordinary case of an audacious $23 million Ponzi scheme by missing Sydney businesswoman Melissa Caddick and the subsequent, grisly discovery of her severed foot on a beach has been turned into a landmark investigative podcast series by The Sydney Morning Herald and 60 Minutes.

Launching on April 11, Liar, Liar: Melissa Caddick and the Missing Millions will be hosted by the Herald ’s Walkley award-winning investigative reporter Kate McClymont and award-winning 60 Minutes reporter Tom Steinfort, with the series uncovering startling new evidence, and features never-before-heard audio of Melissa Caddick as well as interviews from key players speaking for the very first time.

Delving into one of the most captivating crimes of the century, the nine-part series will chart how a seemingly successful financial planner, from Sydney’s eastern suburbs, turned out to be a sociopathic con artist, who stole more than $23 million from mainly family and friends who thought their funds were being invested in shares.

Within hours of her home being raided by ASIC in November 2020 amid questions over an unlicensed financial services business, she disappeared. But this is no ordinary missing persons case.

As McClymont – who won her ninth Walkley for her coverage of the case – and Steinfort unravel the case, they will follow the money trail on a riveting journey through 49-year-old Caddick’s life that will take listeners from upmarket jewellery auction rooms in Hong Kong, to the ski slopes of Aspen and to private islands in the South Pacific.

Featuring chilling audio of Caddick as she leaves phone messages for victims, Liar, Liar: Melissa Caddick and the Missing Millions follows the web of deceit and behaviour that allowed Caddick to rip off some of her closest friends and ended with her vanishing into thin air on November 12. An Asics running shoe containing her foot was discovered by surfers at a remote beach on the NSW South Coast – the same beach she regularly visited as a child.

Living a privileged life of fast cars, high-end fashion and extravagant overseas trips, the Caddick case has garnered a huge amount of interest from the public with numerous theories on whether she was preparing for an exit strategy, jumped off nearby ocean cliffs, or if she was murdered.

Kate McClymont said: “I have covered all manner of spivs and charlatans during my career, but the twists and turns in the Melissa Caddick story is unlike anything I have ever come across.

“The chilling manner in which she ruthlessly stripped her family and friends of their life savings in order to feed her insatiable need for a life of luxury is truly gobsmacking. But you don’t become the Queen of the Con overnight and our discovery of her earlier crimes leaves you feeling you have been dealing with someone purely evil.”

Tom Steinfort said: “Still to this day, I regularly get strangers approaching me in the street wanting to share with me their theory on what really happened in this case. The Melissa Caddick story has struck a chord like few others I can remember.

“The deeper you dig, the stranger it gets…and trust me, we’ve done some serious digging for this podcast! Some of the new evidence we’ve managed to uncover is jaw dropping – and just wait until you hear from Melissa herself.”

Bevan Shields, editor of The Sydney Morning Herald said: “Watching Kate McClymont cover the Melissa Caddick story over the past two years has been inspiring and riveting. Her dedication, thoroughness and sheer enthusiasm in chasing a story that has the whole country talking has been extraordinary.

“Over the past few months Kate has turned her attention to digging deeper into the story and telling it via a new medium – a podcast with Tom. I’ve had many subscribers contact me wondering when they’ll get their next ‘hit’ of Kate McClymont journalism and I’m thrilled to tell them it is imminent.

“I’ve listened to the first episode and am already hooked at the power of investigative journalism and Kate’s easy style of drawing you into a conversation about one of the great Sydney stories.”

Kirsty Thomson, Executive Producer of 60 Minutes said: “Tom’s series of stories on 60 Minutes and Kate’s investigations for The Sydney Morning Herald have revealed so much about the depth and scale of this extraordinary con. It’s so exciting to see them now come together on ‘Liar, Liar’ to bring us tantalising new details about Melissa Caddick’s life from many people who have never spoken publicly before.”

Liar, Liar: Melissa Caddick and the Missing Millions is the definitive investigation into the Caddick mystery and the ultimate multi-million dollar long con, and will premiere on Monday, April 11 on SPOTIFY and wherever you get your podcasts.

Seems 10 have all but given up on 10 Speaks.

The only regular podcast (it’s more of a vodcast) is Talking Tribal, which will come to an end after the finale tonight.

The other series which moved to LiSTNR when they announced their deal haven’t really progressed at all, with The Professor and the Hack only releasing one new episode since January following the budget the other night.

They also let Gillian Bowen take over control and ownership of the ‘Making Money Easy’ podcast for god knows whatever reason.

No sign of the previously announced The Project, Football Companion or new true crime podcasts either.

Deb Knight’s Pollie Waffle and On The Trail: Election 2022 with Charles Croucher

Two new political podcasts

With a federal election just around the corner, 9Podcasts has launched two new series to help you navigate the political landscape, unpack the key policy issues and give you greater insight into what makes our leaders tick.

We see them on our TV screens and hear them on the radio – and let’s be honest, we’re a little sick of them. They’re in it for themselves, and they only ever care about winning votes. None of them have any real-life experience – they’re totally out of touch, right?

Well, Deb Knight’s Pollie Waffle is an opportunity to get to know the politicians we THINK we know: their upbringing, professional careers, and why they chose to enter the bear pit of Federal Parliament. And most importantly, do they REALLY believe the “pollie waffle” they dish up every day?

This in-depth interview series will introduce listeners to the people who represent us, away from the camera lights and scripted speeches. And all over a plate of delicious waffles.

On The Trail: Election 2022 speaks with some of Australia’s best political minds to condense years of fires, floods, lockdowns, lies, crisis and cost increases into the one decision we all have to make.

From the leaders, the tactics, the commercials and the campaigns themselves, On The Trail: Election 2022 analyses what’s happened, what will happen, and what it all means for you.

With the sound of Trump’s 2020 campaign events still ringing in his ears, Nine’s former US Correspondent Charles Croucher turns his attention to Canberra, where political tensions are rising as fast as consumer prices.

In a weekly podcast released each Friday, Charles speaks with Australia’s sharpest political minds, unpacking the key moments of the campaign as battle lines are drawn and babies are kissed.

On The Trail: Election 2022 features Nine’s leading political experts, spearheaded by 9News Political Editor Chris Uhlmann, together with 6PR’s Gareth Parker and 4BC’s Neil Breen.

Additionally, cut through the spin in a weekly segment from Australia’s leading creative, advertising and branding expert, 3AW Breakfast host Russel Howcroft, as he untwists the overt and covert campaign tactics designed to sell the sizzle.

New SBS podcast Bad Taste invites listeners to challenge their perceptions of good food

SBS has today launched Bad Taste , a new podcast series exploring the concept of ‘good food’ – uncovering the lesser-known stories behind the Australian palate, and analysing who calls the shots on what’s deemed a delicacy or a dud.

Hosted by renowned Melbourne food writer Jess Ho, episode 1 examines the controversial staple Spam, and its changing relevance from an army ration to a food that’s found in pantries worldwide. The episode also features fascinating insights from head chef of stellar Melbourne restaurant Etta, Rosheen Kaul, and Kooking with a Koori home chef and influencer Nathan Lyons.

Available now on the SBS Radio app and all popular podcast platforms, new episodes of Bad Taste will drop every Wednesday.

Through the six part series, Ho explores how we define ourselves through the foods we eat, dissecting the question – who gets to decide what good and bad food is? Featuring some of the industry’s biggest names including award-winning writer, farmer, and researcher Bruce Pascoe, and Thi Le, chef and co-owner of restaurant Anchovy and Ca Com Bánh Mì, the series will uncover surprising stories behind foods like spam, native grains and bánh mì.

Ho’s journey will take listeners along the 36,000-year-old story of Aboriginal breadmaking using ancient grains, exploring how these could be the answer to Australia’s water shortage; examine the messy history behind the much-loved and lesser-known East African lasagne; as well as discussing the emotional significance of instant noodles in Asian culture – are they junk food or delicacy?

Along the way, Ho examines the human cost of food production, giving voice to farmers, researchers, expert eaters and chefs all fighting to have their voice recognised - through the ingredients they champion, the aisles they stock, the prices they charge, and the people they hire.

Podcast host Jess Ho said, “I spent a lot of time as a food writer oversimplifying any cuisine that wasn’t French, which made me wonder why we would expect the general public to automatically know what steak tartare is but have to explain something like yukhoe by comparison. In Bad Taste , I wanted to explore the complexity of different dishes and let them be their own hero, rather than contextualise them to something European. I wanted to explore the full story behind each dish and see how they make us who we are.”

Through this insightful series, Ho challenges us to think differently about food – questioning our perceptions of value. Ultimately, it all comes down to one question: what is good taste anyway?

The first episode of Bad Taste is now available on Apple Podcasts , Google Podcasts , Spotify , and via the SBS Radio app , with new episodes available on Wednesdays.

‘Come to therapy with me’ – All new from Nine Podcasts

9Podcasts today announced the launch of Come To Therapy With Me.

In Come To Therapy With Me, listeners are invited to follow Nikolina’s virgin journey into therapy. It’s an insight into what therapy sessions are like, what a therapist is like, how therapy works and just how effective it can be for a 29-year-old about to be mum-of-two who has no idea what she is doing in all aspects of her life – career, motherhood and her social life.

After experiencing post-natal blues following the birth of her son Noah, Nikolina wants to be better prepared for baby number two. She wants to be ready to deal with the anxiety and stress that being a new parent can cause.

But motherhood isn’t the only thing causing her anxiety. Nikolina is an overthinker. She overthinks her career moves, her relationship, her friendships, her finances, her skincare routine, when COVID will disappear…pretty much just about everything.

So, there is a LOT to talk about and a lot for her therapist to dissect.

In this limited series Nikolina sits down with a qualified therapist and signs away her privacy agreement in order to welcome you into her weekly sessions. Just she, the therapist and your keen ears.

Join Nikolina as she opens up her heart and her mind. If any of the topics above strike a chord with you, this podcast might just be the nudge you need to put yourself first and book a session of your own.

Because therapy should be normal…so let’s make it normal.
