ABC on the podium with multiple wins at Australian Podcast Awards

ABC programs and people have performed strongly at the Australian Podcast Awards, which celebrate the nation’s best audio talent and creativity.

The ABC’s 10 awards spanned diverse topics such as history, music, gender equality, current affairs, true crime and pandemics, including the popular podcasts Stuff the British Stole, Background Briefing, Take 5 and Patient Zero. The ABC also claimed bronze for Best Network or Publisher overall at the annual awards.

“This year’s Australian Podcast Awards highlight the diversity of ABC podcasts, across areas such as current affairs, history, pandemics, politics and true crime. Congratulations to all our winners for entertaining and invigorating listeners, no matter their interests.”

Stuff the British Stole, written and presented by Marc Fennell, won the gold Creativity Award and bronze for Best Documentary, for its globe-trotting tales of treasures plundered by the British Empire. The success of the ABC Radio National podcast, season 2 of which premiered in October, follows its recent gold prize for best history documentary at the New York Festivals Radio Awards.

Investigative program Background Briefing won silver in the Creativity Award category at the Australian Podcast Awards, while Ms Represented, with Annabel Crabb and Steph Tisdell, won silver for Best Current Affairs podcast, for charting the rise of female politicians in Australia.

The ABC claimed two prizes in the Best Radio category, with silver for The Sammy J Snack Pack and bronze for music podcast Take 5 with Zan Rowe. Also claiming silver were the ABC’s Unravel: Juanita for Best True Crime Podcast and investigative mystery series Finding Desperado for Best Entertainment Podcast.

Patient Zero, which examined the stories behind major disease outbreaks, won silver in the Spotlight Award category.

SCA AND NETWORK 10 ANNOUNCE MULTI-YEAR AGREEMENT FOR PODCAST CO-PRODUCTIONS AND DISTRIBUTION ON LiSTNR

SCA today announced that is has signed a multi-year agreement with Network 10 to expand the burgeoning relationship to the distribution, hosting, sales representation, and development of new podcast co-productions in 2022 and beyond.

The agreement will see Network 10’s existing podcasts, including The Professor and the Hack with Hugh Riminton and Peter Van Onselen, Short Black with Sandra Sully, Australian Survivor: Talking Tribal , and Where’s William Tyrrell? , housed exclusively on LiSTNR.

The LiSTNR team will also collaborate with Network 10 on a number of new co-productions in 2022 and beyond, including a weekly football podcast in conjunction with the network’s A-Leagues broadcasts.

The new co-produced podcasts will take a unique approach, with a concurrent TV broadcast and audio on demand launch.

In addition, SCA will provide editorial, hosting, distribution, and sales representation across all existing and new Network 10 podcasts.

“Our partnership with Network 10 expands on our existing regional television affiliation agreement as we jointly explore avenues to invest in new and existing audio on demand offerings. From existing to future franchises, we aim to provide a multi-platform video and audio offer to our broad and expanding audiences. This is a unique and exciting approach and one that complements the LiSTNR suite of content,” SCA CEO, Grant Blackley, said.

The addition of our compelling and popular podcasts, including Where’s William Tyrrell? and Short Black, housed on LiSTNR ensures they are now available on a platform which offers an unparalleled depth of digital content.”

The agreement is effective from 1 January 2022

Does this mean from next year, these four podcasts won’t be available on other podcast platforms, and you will have to register for a LiSTNR account to listen to new episodes?

Explore meditation styles from around the world with new SBS podcast

SBS is encouraging all Australians to rest and reset with the launch of a new guided meditation podcast. Titled Great Minds , the podcast features 15-minute episodes exploring different meditation styles from around the world.

The series follows actor and meditation enthusiast Leah Vandenberg as she enlists the help of experts to explore and experience six different meditation styles. Over the course of 18 episodes, audiences will be taken around the world, hearing from expert teachers of Japanese Shinrin Yoku, Chinese Qigong, Hawaiian Ho’oponopono, Filipino Hilot, Indian Yoga Nidra and a wellness practice grounded in First Nations’ connection to Country called Wayapa Wuurrk developed by Gunai Kurnai man Jamie Marloo Thomas.

Audiences are encouraged to take a short break and join Vandenberg as she is led by the experts of each meditation style for a guided session to better understand the practice and the cultural origins of the various meditation styles.

The first three episodes are now available at sbs.com.au/greatminds, on Spotify, Apple Podcasts, Google Podcasts, and via the SBS Radio app.

The Law Society of NSW and LiSTNR have launched a new podcast, Lawfully Explained, that helps break down some of the most common legal issues for the public.

From ABC launching 23 February.

The first four episodes of the podcast series will be hosted by Triple M Wagga Wagga Breakfast announcer Leigh Ryan and Triple M Cairns Breakfast announcer Elliott Lovejoy, both hosts with over a decade of experience in radio.

In each episode, each host will sit down with a well-known and respected member of the community to gain an understanding of their life, achievements, and challenges, and provide an insight into what it’s like to live in their part of Australia.

The award-winning 7NEWS true crime investigation podcast, The Lady Vanishes , has surpassed 10 million streams and downloads since its launch in 2019.

The 7NEWS.com.au production delves into the true story of much-loved mother, teacher and friend, Marion Barter, who boarded a plane for an overseas adventure 22 years ago and was never seen again.

The riveting 51-episode series continues to enthral listeners as they follow Marion’s daughter’s pursuit for answers.

The Lady Vanishes executive producer, Alison Sandy said: “Since its launch in 2019, The Lady Vanishes has been a labour of love for all involved. NSW Police initially dismissed the case, however, they have since reopened the investigation after listening to the podcast. It finally feels like we are getting close to a resolution. We’re closing in on the culprit.

“A special thanks to Seven Network Director of News and Public Affairs, Craig McPherson, and everyone who made this podcast possible by investing support for our project from the start.”

New episodes are being released sporadically, depending on the investigation, new details and the inquest.
