TEAM ITALY’S PERFECT PASTA SECURES WIN OVER TEAM VENEZUELA DESPITE DESSERT DISAPPOINTMENT

On tonight’s (September 7) episode of Plate of Origin, Team Italy’s mother and daughter team, Teresa and Michelle showcased textbook Italian cooking with a squid ink pasta no judge could fault, scoring a perfect 30 out of 30 for their main, leaving Michelle in tears.

Friends Kiki and Aly declared it was time to introduce Australia to Venezuelan cooking, with Aly becoming emotional when serving the judges a dish they hadn’t tried before. Their main dish scored a strong 26 out of 30, but it was no match for the ‘pasta master’ Teresa.

Team Italy took a risk with their dessert with a modern version of a classic cannoli but didn’t quite nail it. They ran out of time to create the perfect shaped ‘cannoli bowl’, but with a perfect main they still secured a win over Team Venezuela with 52 out of 60 points.

Michelle said: “We brought this home for us, for our family and for Italy. The Italian community might not be happy we messed with the cannoli, but they’ll be happy that we won.”

Team Venezuela will now go into an elimination round.

Tuesday September 8, 7.30pm on Plate of Origin:

Team India, Team France, Team Australia, Team Venezuela and Team Vietnam – the five losing teams from the head-to-heads compete in the first elimination challenge by turning the flavours of their nation into an Aussie classic – the pie! The stakes are raised when teams learn that two of them will be eliminated by the end of the day.

I don’t see anyway this gets renewed with ratings falling below 400k but even worse the show only ranked 19th for the night in 7’s main target demo of 25-54’s.

No way it will be renewed. It’s just one of Ross’ failed cooking companion shows that was always destined to fail (like Restaurant Revolution, Zumbo and Hell’s Kitchen).

Hell’s Kitchen could have succeeded had Seven not gone for the celebrity version.

I wonder if Netflix would buy it .

What would be the incentive? Although they did buy the TV show La Casa De Pepel from Spain for $2 dollars and turned it into a huge hit.

To find a new audience like Just Desserts did. Masterchef is huge in India and this could be big for Netflix in that market with the two former judges as a selling point.

It is definitely better than I thought it would be. I am just over Matt and Gary.

And if they had Gordon Ramsay instead of the boring Marco Pierre White.

DOUBLE ELIMINATION LEAVES TEAM AUSTRALIA AND TEAM VENEZUELA OFF THE MENU

Tonight’s (September 8) episode of Plate of Origin was a battle of two rounds. In round one, the five losing teams from previous head-to-head cooks faced off in a challenge - taking their heritage and combining it with an Australian classic - the good old Aussie pie.

Team Vietnam (Beef Pho Pie) and Team India (Samosa Pie) served up the best pies to ensure safety from elimination. After a stressful cook trying to thicken a traditional Pho broth into a pie gravy and running out of time to get it in the oven, Team Vietnam’s Thanh and Duncan left the judges agreeing their pie was unbeatable. Team India’s (husband and wife Ash and Simran) Samosa pie earnt them safety with Matt declaring it “a textbook example of how to put the flavours of your heritage into something that is quintessentially Australian. ”

Friends Kiki and Aly from Team Venezuela (Chicken Polvorosa Pie) were praised for their flavours but eliminated from the competition for a dry chicken filling and undercooked pastry.

Team France (Chicken & Champignon Pie) and Team Australia (Beer & Vegemite Pie) were sent to round two after Team Australia had so much trouble with their pastry, they forgot to season the entire filling and underdelivered on the promise of vegemite. While Team France’s pie was delicious, their sides of potatoes were inconsistent, and a bland salad wilted their chances of safety.

Round two saw Team Australia and Team France take on a tart challenge to fight for their spot in the competition. Team Australia’s (Cherry Ripe Tart) run of mistakes continued when their pastry shrunk and was overcooked. Although Team France (Lemon Tart) were forced to use their back up lemon curd after fears their burnt butter spoilt their first batch, Leo’s pastry was the hero of their tart, and combined with their smooth curd, secured a win leaving mates Ethan and Stew from Team Australia eliminated from the competition.

On their challenging cook, Manu said: “ That is typical of the Aussie spirit, the mateship, the never give up the fight until the end.”

Ethan said: “We’ve had a good bloody laugh and we’ve met some incredible people and I’m going to be taking those with me after this competition because that’s what it’s all about – food bringing people together.”

Monday (Sept 14, 7.30pm) on Plate of Origin:

The quarter finals are here as eight remaining teams enter the Fast and Furious round. Four teams will cook in two fast head-to-head battles – they will have just 45 minutes to serve a premium free-range chicken dish that celebrates a true taste of their cuisine. At the end of the night two teams will be eliminated and two teams will go to the semi-finals.

This week’s episodes were quite good. Who would have thought the ingredients of Pho can be remade into a tasty pie? Team Australia just had a bad day in the kitchen - first using the wrong type of pastry in the pie challenge, then overcooked the pastry in the tart cook-off.
Going back to the first round, I notice that the dessert scores were all lower than the main scores. Seems to me that the teams concentrated their efforts into the main that they somehow neglected the dessert.

Plate of Origin will conclude with a 3 hour grand final Tuesday 22 September at 7:30pm. (No Monday episode of that week due to AFL.)

PERFECT CHICKEN SOUVLAKI WRAPS UP A WIN FOR TEAM GREECE AS TEAM VIETNAM ALSO ADVANCE TO FINALS

On tonight’s (Sept. 14) episode of Plate of Origin, four teams entered the fast and furious round cooking an authentic dish in 45 minutes showcasing chicken. Two teams were eliminated while the two winning teams progressed to the finals.

Team Vietnam’s Lemongrass Chicken wraps proved too strong for Team Lebanon’s Chicken Shawarma as mother and daughter Jamal and Rachida were eliminated from the competition. While their generosity of spirit and serving size will not be forgotten by the judges, attention to detail was missing and the chicken was dry.

Matt told Team Lebanon: “You cooked some amazing food and I think you’re going to leave with your heads held high.”

In the next fast and furious, Team Greece’s Chicken Souvlaki scored a perfect 30/30 from the judges, and while Team India’s Chicken Biryani earned praise and surprise for cooking in just 45 minutes, it was no match for a perfect souvlaki, seeing husband and wife Ash and Simran eliminated from the competition.

Simran declared: “I hope I have made every Indian out there proud of us. It still is the best cuisine ever and we’re always going to be the proud Indians. Long live India!”

Tomorrow (Sept 15, 7.30pm) on Plate of Origin:

It’s a sudden death knock out. Who will make it to the grand final?

It’s a 45-minute beef challenge – first up Team China v Team Cameroon, then in round two Team France v Team Italy as they all battle it out for the best food on the planet.

It was a surprise to see Team Lebanon eliminated after having the highest score (55 out of 60) in the first round. The ladies’ generosity cost them in the end.

I wouldn’t necessarily say that
Rachida was stressing in the kitchen quite a lot and I believe that was part of the downfall.

There was another shock result last night with Team Cameroon beating Team China in the quarter final by just one point. A huge turnaround for the Cameroon girls as they chose the wrong cut of beef (chuck) then burnt the first batch on the barbeque, and had to start again.
In the last quarter final, Team Italy edged out Team France also by one point. The soggy chips cost Team France valuable points, and Austine was so upset that he stormed out without saying farewell to the judges or fellow contestants.

Preview for next week’s semi final and grand final

If Team China didn’t allow the Cameroon girls to use their resources, Cameroon would have been done for.

Which was very unsportsmanlike, and he’s almost destroyed France’s reputation. I’m sure Manu wasn’t happy with that.

Are we all confident that Team Greece is going to win?

The real winner will be the audience, when this shit ends after tonight.
