I was quoting Seven’s radio advert that has been running. Sounds like they may have taken his comments out of context to promote the show. ![]()

TEAM CHINA STEALS VICTORY WITH PERFECT SCORES
On tonight’s (Aug 30) premiere episode of Plate of Origin, Team China and Team Australia went head-to-head with Team China’s Mandy and Chrys claiming victory by one point for their mouth-watering and perfect scoring main of Duck with Biang Biang Noodles, forcing team Australia’s Ethan and Stew into the elimination challenge.
Cooking their best main and dessert inspired by their heritage, both teams had 90 minutes to prep both courses, 60 minutes to cook their main and 45 minutes to serve their dessert.
Despite a misstep with their dessert, Team China managed to take home the win. “We didn’t do it just for ourselves, we did it for all Chinese people and all Australian Chinese,” said Chrys.
Team Australia may be down, but they’re not out of the game. “Were going to elimination, but it’s not with our tails between our legs. We only lost by one point, we are going to come back stronger and better than before,” promised Stu.
Tomorrow (Aug 31, 7.30pm) on Plate of Origin:
Team Greece (cousins Dezi and Penny) v Team France (friends Austine and Leo).
Will a Greek tragedy lead to a French victory in the battle to find the best food on the planet?
It’s a battle of two European culinary titans.
Episode 2
TEAM GREECE SERVE UP THE WIN AFTER EXPLOSIVE DESSERT DECIDER
On tonight’s (Aug 31) episode of Plate of Origin, it was a battle of the superpowers as Team Greece and Team France went head-to-head in the arena with cousins Dezi and Penny making good on their mantra - don’t underestimate Greek mums - as they secured the win scoring 49 out of 60.
Competitors Austine and Leo came in extremely confident, hoping to showcase an array of techniques to establish France as the best cuisine in the world. While they nailed the duck component of their main with a beautifully crispy skin, they stumbled on the accompanying blueberry sauce.
Team Greece took the judges to their home island by cooking octopus, a symbol of Greek summer. It was a near perfect main grilled to perfection, aside from Manu’s tasting plate which was slightly undercooked.
The dessert round was the all-important decider. After a slip up with their Loukoumades dough exploding in the fridge, forcing them to start from scratch, Team Greece rescued their dessert and came up trumps
after Team France misjudged the proportions of their Framboisier tower. With Team France headed into the elimination challenge, Manu gave Austine and Leo some advice: French food doesn’t have to be fine dining, encouraging the pair to do simple foods, but full of flavour.
“We are going to fight in this competition, this is not the end for Team France, ” said Leo of his team’s future after their defeat.
Tomorrow (Sept 1, 7.30pm) on Plate of Origin:
Team Cameroon (sisters Kelly and Ashley) v Team Vietnam (friends Thanh and Duncan).
Can Team Cameroon surprise everyone with the spices of Africa or will emotions get the better of them as they battle it out to see who has the best food on the planet?
I like that too and I think the contestants were very funny too. Like MKR before all the bitchiness took over the show.
How was last nights ep? I didn’t go back after night 1…
I think it’s developing well. The concept is not much different from MKR and Masterchef but it’s good if you just want to see cooking with less contrived dramas.
I also like the outdoor setting. Nice to see day turn to night, and gives an indication how long everything takes in real time.
I reckon the producers deliberately had the prep time beginning at sunset.
The two remaining match-ups are:
Sunday (September 6): Team India v Team Lebanon
Monday (September 7): Team Italy v Team Venezuela
Tuesday (September 8) is the elimination challenge where two teams would go home.
TEAM CAMEROON SHOWCASE WINNING CUISINE IN EMOTIONAL COOK
On tonight’s (September 1) Plate of Origin, Team Cameroon and Team Vietnam went head-to-head with both teams plating up incredible mains, leaving a dessert duel as the final decider. Team Cameroon - sisters Kelly and Ashley - won with a score of 48 out of 60 after pushing through an emotional cook, feeling the pressure of not letting their family and community down.
Mates Thanh and Duncan from Team Vietnam packed a powerful flavour punch with their spicy beef noodle soup, garnering glowing praise from the judges with only one small negative - the pig’s trotters were slightly undercooked for Matt.
Team Cameroon made a stunning comeback after running short of prep time and burning the base of their tomato stew, leaving Ashley in tears. After a pep talk from Gary and cheered on by the other teams, they pulled together a near perfect main course for all three judges with only the chicken missing a crispy skin. Manu scored them a perfect 10, the dish evoking happy memories of eating Cameroonian cuisine as a child.
For dessert, Team Vietnam once again played with unusual flavours using charred corn in a dessert, which added to an overcooked sago, proved their downfall despite praise for their coconut ice cream. Team Cameroon won the dessert show down with served beignets, and although the sides to the dish were perfect, the beignets themselves were heavy.
“We are going into the elimination round but there’s a fire in my belly,” declared Thanh after their defeat with Duncan adding, “I can’t wait to get back in that kitchen.”
Sunday (Sept 6, 7.00pm) on Plate of Origin:
Team India (husband and wife Ash and Simran) and Team Lebanon (mother and daughter Jamal and Rachida) compete head-to-head which results in a new record-breaking score for the competition.
The judges battle the elements as a wild storm rolls in, but they soon find comfort in some of the best food they’ve tasted so far.
Actually, you’re not alone! I too share the same view of this show ![]()
Been watching Plate of Origins during my lunch !
Really hungry for some Vietnamese food.
My favourite food.
I have watched the first episode. Look it’s not terrible. Not as bad as many have said. However, I think the audience is over Matt and Gary. Them joking about not being about to understand Manu (a name Garry couldn’t even pronounce) is just an old joke that didn’t need to be repeated.
Manu and wife Clarissa Weerasena are special guests on Better Homes and Gardens tonight.
I caught up with the Monday and Tuesday episodes this afternoon, and wondered why each episode took a whole day to shoot? For example, in Monday’s episode, the judges greeted the 10 teams in the morning before Team Greece and Team France started their prep. The other 8 teams ate the main in the afternoon, but it was not until the evening before Team Greece and Team France started making dessert. If they did their dessert in the afternoon, the judges would have been able to give feedback and scores before sunset.
I’ve been hearing that a lot - the best part of the show is the judges chemistry. Unfortunately, I don’t think many gave the show a chance - we’ve already had cooking shows like MKR and Masterchef air for months in the first half of the year, and echoing @turdall’s sentiments, it seems we’re over Gary and Matt.
TEAM LEBANON’S KITCHEN REDEMPTION LEADS TO COMPETITION HIGH
On tonight’s (Sept 6) episode of Plate of Origin, two countries with stellar culinary reputations; Team Lebanon and Team India went head-to-head in the arena with traditional cooking methods handed down over generations securing the win for Team Lebanon’s mother and daughter Jamal and Rachida who earned 55 out of 60 - the highest score in the competition so far.
Husband and wife Ash and Simran from Team India came into the cook with high confidence, but the stress of an ambitious menu and limited time almost got the better of them in the main course. While their dish was well received and the judges complimented their butter chicken, they agreed the flavour of their sauce needed to develop more.
It was also a stressful main cook for Team Lebanon laden with tears; the weight of doing their culture proud and fears of undercooked fish almost bringing them undone. However, the fish was cooked perfectly, and a star was born with Jamal’s tahini sauce (made without measuring anything) a knockout for all the judges. Rachida was overwhelmed: “I honestly did not expect that feedback considering all the things that went wrong in that kitchen.”
Team Lebanon’s dessert was also full of emotion as Rachida oversaw the pastry that kept breaking, but when Matt visited their kitchen to ask if she would consider using store bought filo, Rachida would not consider it, impressing the judges with her resolve to stick with authentic methods. Team India were confident their Halwa dessert would get them back on top, but the flavourless pistachio ice cream melted their chances.
With Team India heading into the elimination round, Gary told Ash and Simran they did India proud. Ash declared; “Indian people are resilient; we get knocked down and we get up again. We fight, we are going to keep fighting. Go India!”
Tomorrow (Sept 7, 7.30pm) on Plate of Origin:
Team Italy (Mother and daughter Teresa and Michelle Minichiello) v Team Venezuela (friends Kiki and Aly) compete in the final head to head. With fire and passion in both team’s blood this will be a battle like no other.
Liking the show so far,I get to have another cooking show fix since Masterchef finished.
Gary (a name you couldn’t even spell).
