Pay TV History

I’ve been looking for footage of Galaxy and Premier Sports Network for ages. Where did you find this footage and where is it available to view?

It is just part of news reports that I taped back in January 1995. It is not available to view anywhere.

Upload it to youtube?

Premier Sports Network footage of the 4th Test between the West Indies and Australia in 1995. PSN’s commentators included Tony Cosier, Mike Coward and the face of PSN at the time, the late David Hookes.

Here’s more of the PSN coverage.

It was simulcast with Network Ten to comply with anti-siphoning rules at the time. It was a last minute deal. Nine didn’t want to simulcast, they wanted the cricket as exclusive.

It would’ve been virtually exclusive as it was… PSN had about 5 subscribers.

That would probably be an MATV installation (Master Antenna Television), see Master Antenna TV Systems (Hospitals, Hotels, etc) for more info and examples. Basically, the motel receives Foxtel channels in a centralised location and use specialised equipment to inject the channels into the DVB signal.

Do you remember the Foxtel Magazine?

They still produce it. It’s just not given away for free with subscriptions any more.

Foxtel February 2022.

I don’t think they have done that for a long time. You have to subscribe to it as an extra and it goes on your Foxtel bill.

I ‘got into’ satellite TV right before Foxtel Digital launched. It was the gold card days so I brought my own set-top box and would blind scan the entire satellite. I remember seeing a bunch of channels with names just like those in the caps above - 4 letters maximum with all capital. I figured it was just old Foxtel naming techniques.

Now I know why! The pre-digital set-top box GUIs couldn’t fit in any more letters. Bit of a short sighted design when you think about it.
