Paramount Australia & New Zealand

Dead.

I think Paramount have under estimated the Australian market.

Going exclusivity for premium sports rights have failed in the last 12 months

They’re getting poor guidance from somewhere - whether its locally or remote

I think the blame falls on them (Paramount).

Why don’t channel 10 ten get baseball Australian league and get right to some Major League Baseball and college football and nfl from the good old USA like they did in the one hd days 10 years ago maybe make another f.t.a sports channel even maybe try to get international cricket of foxtel even if it does not feature Australia.,lacrosse,European soccer, handball ,international athletics, winter sport

I think it’s too late now to be honest. 10 is done and dusted.

Maybe if it were 10/15 years ago they could rebuild but with so much competition now and the continuing decline of FTA, there’s only so many FTA viewers left to fight the others for.

There’s no way they’re going to lure viewers back to FTA with so many great streaming options. Viewers will never go back.

Why? Yeah sure some people care but live coverage is AM here

NFL will be good but it’s tied on ESPN. 7mate has a contract that runs out until 2024

If you really care about NFL you have Gamepass or maybe ESPN. A FTA package is not worth it outside the Super Bowl. And it’s certainly not going to drive audiences to 10.

10 peach and all their FTa digital channels are mostly American reruns anyway but theses channels still seem to rate well but maybe they should just have 1 channel and have content just on paramount + and make Pluto tv permanent

Yeah but I don’t think ESPN has its own subscription service in AUS the only way to get it would be Kayo. Plus Gamepass is expansive.

is NFL even a big thing down here? I don’t think it’ll get many viewers

It’s niche. The fans down here that love it, really love it.

It’s getting a lot bigger then it was lets just say that.

I asked my 9 year old kids the other day what 7, 9, 10 and abc were the other day, and they said “they’re apps”. Being a tv channel didn’t get a mention.

That’s probably one thing that Paramount does have going for it and its survival - it’s that it (like Nine) have embraced streaming with its subscription models to supplement the traditional catch up. I didn’t watch “There’s something about Pam” on 9Now, but the moment it was ad free on Stan I did.

In the longer term, the future will be streaming, with the viewership numbers hidden behind a platform somewhere.

Running a network ain’t in my skill set… but having a look at the early feedback from the tvtonight survey, people are calling out for drama.

Imagine if millions was invested in drama in the same way they talk about sport.

The other thing that 10 has going for it, is so much good will from its fans. There must be a way to somehow capitalise on that.

Ten leaning into their strengths and what works well on streaming platforms would be to invest heavily into kids programming.

It’s something they’ve always done well over the years, and it’s a very strong niche for streaming platforms that can be something to just throw on.

Sure it’s not going to win ratings, so doesn’t help their linear channels - but in terms of making Paramount successful, it would be a big subscription driver imo.

What 10 could do is take more of an interest in the NBL. It’s a league with some brand recognition, a decent quality of play, and seems to consistently get very good crowds. When I say ‘take more of an interest’, I mean promote it on their channels (like, actually promote it, and not whatever their current advertising strategy is), devote news bulletin time to it, and actually take control of the TV production. Heck, maybe get a few CBS Sports staff to advise the NBL and 10 on how to go about things. And obviously, get the rights to all of the games.

Does it have the same prestige as the AFL or cricket? Of course not, let’s not kid ourselves here - but what they could do is build some sort of base that will tune in consistently over the summer, and then really promote their tentpole shows during the playoffs and finals. Lets face it, there’s not much else for them to go for, and to make matters worse, the major Australian sporting organisations no longer give them the time of day. They’ve got to start somewhere.

I do share the concerns of a few here about Paramount’s future with 10. Wouldn’t be surprised to see them wash their hands off it within the next year or so.

This is why I think Viacom/CBS should have never merged - because before the merger, it seemed that CBS really wanted to invest in 10, and it’s news department in particular - but now we’ve got the apathetic Paramount company that wants to cut more and more.

I reckon 10 would’ve got the AFL rights, if Viacom and CBS never merged - they probably would’ve made a higher bid.

Hasn’t the NBL always been produced by a production company hired by the NBL & distributed to the broadcasters? Also I think currently the only issue with the broadcast is that it’s all done from a studio & not at the arena

I think the 1st step is to put the NBL on 10 or Bold instead of 10peach. If they are serious about getting the rights in 2024

As I said, if Paramount wants the A-grade sports, they need to make themselves seen as a sport broadcaster. Keep rights to A-League and NBL and also get:

  • All racing (Supercars, F1, MotoGP, Australian GT, Australian Rally, Dunlop D2, FIA World Rally, FIA World Rally, NASCAR, Superutes)
  • Monster Jam
  • World Skateboarding Championship
  • Horse racing
  • 2026 and 2030 Commonwealth Games
  • Rugby World Cup
  • Surfing
  • Sydney to Hobart
  • Golf
  • Rugby Union
  • Swimming
  • Paralympics
  • WNBL
  • World Surf League

A Paramount+ sport channel would be made for pubs. Then they could finally prove themselves as interested in sport and get the A-grade ones.
