Will be interesting - he doesn’t enjoy the limelight or fanfare.
Simon Dallow’s final bulletin is tonight at 6pm on TVNZ1 and TVNZ+.
Of course, a special tribute will be aired at the end of tonight’s bulletin.
Tara Ward from The Spinoff looks back at Simon Dallow’s career at TVNZ for more than 3 decades, dating back in 1993 when he started.
Was a very nice send off! Saw a few old One News faces in the obligatory farewell down the corridor.
“Good night and good luck.”
Simon’s full sign off with a tribute video and the honor of applause from TVNZ staff.
I might as well post my recording, also some extra footage at the end of Seven Sharp tonight as well from the ‘21 gun salute.’
So nice to see Wendy there to support and farewell Simon. Saw a few Instagram stories of them standing together during off-air after the news bulletin wrapped up. Was nice to see the iconic duo 1 News of 15 years bow out.
It’s a shame Wendy didn’t get the farewell she deserved back when she was laid off.
I think with Wendy, it was a bit different because she didn’t leave as such - she just stopped doing the 6pm news with Simon. Presumably (and hopefully!) she’ll continue to fill in as she does now.
Wonderful tribute to Simon, anyway. Always enjoyed his calm, measured presenting style. A couple of the Herald articles suggested he might stick around at 1 News in some form, which would be great. (They do need a new Breakfast host, after all!
)
What I’d love to know is what was this from:
Looks like the Tonight news from around 2004? Very informal look for that time. Though no one would bat an eyelid these days!
I suspect it was either a tease for Agenda or Agenda was moved to the One News studio for an edition? He ran that facial hair during the Agenda days - I think there was a quote at the time basically saying he’d never be able to do it as a newsreader - but since he wasn’t newsreading at that point, he could.
Lovely sign off for Simon. Would be nice to see him remain involved somewhere at TVNZ. Election nights maybe.
Ah, that might make more sense, considering the Don Brash pic behind him. Nice rare find, anyway.
Completely agree. The Herald articles suggested he’d have some sort of ad-hoc interview or reporting slot (maybe something more long-form?), which would be good. I’d be very surprised if he isn’t somehow involved in next year’s election night.
Since posting, I do have a vague recollection of Agenda using that studio during the 2004 Olympics (as their usual studio was used for coverage) but I may be completely wrong.
Would be nice to see that, for sure.
On another note, I wonder if Jack Tame starts tonight? Melissa definitely begins her role tomorrow night.
It would be nice to see a relaunch of sorts, maybe in the new year once Melissa has bedded in and returns from presumably her summer break. The opener and graphics feel quite tired.
If I remember correctly, it was a One News Special highlighting the rise of former National party leader Don Brash and his rise to prominence after his Orewa speech months earlier. One News would do a few primetime specials during this era, it also may have been due to its TVNZ charter obligations that the Clark Labour government put on TVNZ during the 2000s. A shame they don’t do these type of in-depth specials.
They had a 1 News: You me and the economy special on November 25.
Would be good if they did a 1 News special once a season or something 4 times a year.
Melissa Stokes will debut her weekday role tomorrow at 6pm.
He does
Yes, totally forgot they had one a few days ago.
Nice interview, thanks for sharing.
I think Melissa is a safe pair of hands and she’ll do very well. I won’t lie, there are other presenters whose styles I prefer, but then tastes are very personal! Does Miriama Kamo still present? She has a very unique style that I’ve always enjoyed.
On another note, Rebecca Wright has been added to the mix of potential new Breakfast hosts:
Former TV3 presenter Rebecca Wright is the latest name to be raised as the new host of TVNZ’s Breakfast.
She joins Tova O’Brien and Melissa Chan-Green as front-runners to replace Jenny-May Clarkson.
Last week, we also had Lloyd Burr in the picture ,but he looks increasingly like a leading contender to be the new host of RNZ’s Morning Report, replacing Corin Dann.
She’s currently doing a show for NZ Herald with Mark Crysell.
Chris Chang and Wendy last week on Breakfast.
Chris Chang and Indira Stewart this week…although she slept in this morning and Sacha McNeil joined Chris instead from 6:45.
