David Guetta’s by far the worst offender of this. Basically all of his hits the past 2 years have been recycled hooks from other songs.
Although in saying that I do quite enjoy the more recent one he did with Bebe Rexha (which ironically samples his own classic club banger When Loves Takes Over).
This afternoon when I was at Centrelink, they kept playing Ed Sheeran’s single Shivers. I get a lot of shivers when I arrive at the Centrelink and listening to his overplayed songs.
The next thing you know there’ll be a new remix of a U2 or Phil Collins song that hits the airwaves.
To be honest, I find these remixes/remakes of very old songs from the 70s and 80s, and even one from as recently as 2004 (as is the case with “A Bar Song (Tipsy)”), to be over the top. Exception is Luke Combs’ “Fast Car” which is nice to listen to.
But there are other artists whose music could be played instead.
I think it’s symptomatic of the fact that in popular music, there’s nothing new under the sun. The well of creativity hit bedrock a long time ago; ‘plunderphonics’ was probably the last true innovative genre (The Avalanches, Fatboy Slim etc.)
I heard on the NOva 93.7 radio and noticed that they’ve played Thunder from Imagine Dragons. That song has been flogged on radio and on TV. Back then, The Imagine Dragon’s Thunder was played during the promos of Ten’s Big Bash League during the 2017-18 season.
As well, Nova 937 perth also flogged Beyonce’s Halo song. This song has been overplayed on radio for so many years now.
DHT & Edmée’s 2005 cover of Roxette’s “Listen to Your Heart” (Furious F. remix) has become a Hit 104.7 staple since the past few weeks. That song is guaranteed to play at least once when they’re not taking the generic regional log.
I was at a non for profit electronics place and they played Counting Stars from One Republic from Spotify. This song has overplayed so many times on radio and on Glencore ads. This song had over 4 billion views on YouTube.
Speaking of Roxette, It’s still pretty annoying to hear “Dangerous” being flogged on the Triple M Regionals these days, although “Listen to Your Heart” got a resurgence in the early part of the decade after the song appeared in the season 2 episode of Cobra Kai titled “All In” all thanks to Netflix picking the show up.
“Joyride “ by Roxette definitely belongs in this thread for me, I never liked it much at the time, then it was flogged to death over the years and still is my some stations
