I had forgotten about “Rain”, they are all good songs, “Higher” is my favourite.
Nickelback were made fun of many times on Triple M’s Get This.
Creed were described as “rampant God botherers” in an article I read some years ago.
The song ,”With Arms Wide Open “ by Creed ,I really hated it when it first came out ,early’00s ,and for years after that, maybe because it was flogged to death by some stations, particularly Triple M
Probably because radio stations always play this version of the song.
Of course, that was not the version they used in the song’s music video, where the addition of strings makes it a much fuller song imo. Listen for yourself.
That’s right there were 2 versions of this song ,I prefer the one with the string instruments. I listened to this song again recently and I actually don’t mind it now
I really enjoy listening to Phil Collins and his stuff with Genesis including some rarely played songs such as “Follow You, Follow Me” and my personal favourite that doesn’t get played anymore “That’s All,” But for god’s sakes I’m kind of sick of hearing “Something Happened on the Way to Heaven” being played on Triple M Regionals most of the time.
4BH flog this song a bit , I still like it though,
Commercial radio seems to be full of bad cover versions and/or ‘interpolations’ of older songs lately.
I know why stations love these types of songs - they’re both familiar (because they sound a bit like older tracks) and contemporary (due to their production). But by and large, when I hear them, I wonder why they can’t just play the original track instead of the lame remake.
I even heard one the other day which has a sample and slightly altered lyrics from “Gangsta’s Paradise” - interestingly that song was itself sampled from a Stevie Wonder track, so it’s like a sample of a sample
It’s more of a creativity issue, mainstream pop/music is much more safe, not as willing to take risks compared to say 30-40 years ago (same goes for some other creative industries).
Sure, there is quite a lot of great mainstream songs nowadays, but the few interpolated rehashes of older songs kind of sour it a little bit.
Just seems cheap to me.
Yes, it’s unbelievable how many of today’s chart ‘hits’ are butchered versions of classic hits. I died a little inside when Tasmin Archer’s perfect pop song ‘Sleeping Satellite’ was given ‘The Treatment’ a few years back.
Today I was at the hairdresser, and they played Taylor Swift’s single, Anti Hero. It has been overplayed on the radio so many times in recent years and even during the sports broadcasts. I am sick of hearing stuff from Taylor Swift for several years.
Yep, it’s all algorithm-driven mush to me.
I think most artists do it these days purely for the money, not because they love and respect the original version.
… I don’t like no whips and chains …
Absolutely- but that doesn’t mean we have to like it!
I know there was a version by Aurora released in 2003. Are you talking about that version, or another one?
I think it’s the Aurora version, though I thought it was much more recent than that. Perhaps I just heard it and thought ‘here we go, another low budget cover’.
Whatever year it was released, it’s not even close to the original.
To be honest I don’t mind the Aurora version, though I do like the Tasmin Archer original more.
Similarly, I liked the Felix Jaehn/Jasmine Thompson version of “Ain’t Nobody” (originally by Chaka Khan) released in 2015, but not the Richard X/Liberty X version which was released in 2003 (that version peaked at #36 on the ARIA Singles Chart).
Same goes for Nea’s “Some Say” (samples Eiffel 65’s “Blue”), like that one, but not the David Guetta/Bebe Rexha interpolation of 2022.
My opinion of that track hasn’t changed after months of constant airplay…
