NRL coverage

Well what other AM commercial network does it leave? Sky Sports Radio?

Whatever commercial network it is, I would love to see weekly coverage of Storm games returning to Melbourne analogue radio. It has been a decade since 3AK dropped its broadcast.

2ch? Unlikely.

If it’s not the Super Radio Network, perhaps it’s a reference to MRN’s “Talking Lifestyle” network, for broadcasts on 1278AM Melbourne and DAB+ in Perth?

Aside from those already mentioned, how many other major commercial AM radio networks (stand alone stations aside) are there?

Back in March, Singleton stated that 2GB’s audience for its NRL coverage halves when the game starts, saying that people love listening to the blabber in the hours before the game but not the call of the actual game as swarms of listeners switch to watching it on television. Singo reckons the radio rights are worthless. So then, could Macquarie be thinking of keeping the continuous blabber on 2GB and 4BC but shifting the low rating game calls to Talking Lifestyle?

Reminds me of when 2UE lost the exclusive rights to 2GB and still won the football ratings without actually calling the game.

This was when Ray Hadley and the Continuous Call team were stil at 2UE, would have been mid to late 1990s, as shortly afterwards, he switched to 2GB, which was in 2001 (which was the beginning of the end for 2UE).

The “Talking League” era.

They could maybe bring that back for Talking Lifestyle?

Sorry a bit off topic. But I wonder if TLS will carry the cricket in Brisbane and Melbourne this year. Don t bother using NTS. Have it live all the time.

That’s the one!

Knowing Talking Lifestyle, they would turn it into a “footymercial” program … football with sponsored infomercials… uuggghhh…

They can talk about which brand of football is best for your feet and interview the founder of the company during the first half. Maybe if they pay enough they could even commentate the game.

Crocmedia have full control of commercial AFL and A League Radio Broadcasting Rights and then sub lease to organizations like MMM and Macquarie Radio Networks.

For contractual reasons, there’s probably no chance of that happening. The only reason why Macquarie’s cricket coverage has been/is on Talking Lifestyle in Sydney is likely due to a ‘legacy’ issue resulting from the rights deal being signed by Fairfax Radio before the merger happened with Macquarie

Two Melbourne commercial stations will broadcast Sunday’s NRL Grand Final between the Storm and the Cowboys. 3AW will relay 2GB’s Continuous Call broadcast from 7pm AEDT, while Triple M Melbourne will relay Triple M’s Sydney coverage from 6pm AEDT, with Dan Ginnane, Ryan Girdler, Wendell Sailor, Paul Gallen, Ben Hannant and Bill Harrigan. Like previous years, ABC Radio will have NRL Grand Final coverage from 6pm AEDT for AFL states.

It seems 3AW weren’t happy with the 2GB coverage. Someone should have told them 2GB doesn’t do a serious coverage of NRL and pre/post game coverage is mostly unrelated talkback and parody songs.

The Sunday Telegraph reports the ABC has dropped the Warren Ryan Medal (awarded to best and fairest player of the NRL season as judged by ABC Radio commentators) after the premiership-winning coach was found guilty of assaulting a 76-year old man in Sydney’s Pagewood Hotel.

There’s a possibility of a broadcaster to broadcast game to regional stations, could this be crocmedia?

It’d have to be. Billy Boy won’t spend the money to do it himself, plus they take Crocmedia’s A-League stuff, so that’s a clear possibility.

If Crocmedia takes up radio coverage, hopefully it also means weekly broadcast on analogue radio in Melbourne (at the moment you can listen to matches online or on digital radio).

When, and on what station? Not many times lots available once AFL is scheduled, plus basically no one in Melbourne cares about rugby (either code).

Regionals throughout NSW and QLD so I’d say stations like 2HD who don’t take the Macquarie coverage.
