Nova Network

I think the changes at 2day have got Nova’s attention. I have noticed that Nova has now added These Day’s Crystal remix to their playlist which is on high rotation on the new 2day fm playlist.

If 2day fm goes up in the ratings and smashes Nova in the younger demographic’s they will have to respond, but this will mean a seperate log for Sydney for dayparts. Nova doesn’t like seperate logs for their stations.

Interesting to hear Tim Blackwell say yesterday that they have had some copyright issues with music in podcasts. He said something like the producers had to frantically go back and edit their podcasts.

If this is something that has been brought up by record companies it is going to make it very difficult for the presenters now. They are going to have to be careful not to talk over the start or end of songs because they won’t be able to include a sentence or a whole segment in the podcast.

If this is a money grabbing exercise from record companies then they are being very stupid. It’s usually just a few seconds of a track but this just means less people would hear your music.

That could just not include the audio channels in what they record for the podcast. It should be fairly straightforward in most modern studios.

Is the show really only 20 minutes long without any music?

Well, usually the podcasts are at least an hour long and up to 90 mins long.

Yesterday’s podcast has neen edited to shreds. I listened to it this afternoon and there are things from yesterday’s show that were clearly cut. It ended abruptly. The long Australian Idol recap was one of these things. Maybe replaying the artists singing their songs was the copyright issue.

I was under the impression that Nova (and SCA/ARN for that matter) have systems in place to dump the talk breaks into a system automatically that allows them to rapidly package up podcasts and push them out. Might become a bit troublesome when they need editing though.

The speed at which show podcasts come out now suggest that it’s a fairly well engineered process

Not sure about now but when I was doing the footy podcast I had to edit each bit and join them together in VoxPro, then export and upload it onto the podcast platform for uploading. It was a pain in the arse.

I know The Edge in NZ have ChatGPT writing the summary for their podcast as well.

Tuesday podcast also only 23 minutes long. Previous podcasts were called Full Show but this one is called Full-ish Show. :weary:

How can it be hacked so much? Surely they can feed it without all the backing music etc.

On Flashlog there’s the ability to just get clean feed audio from the studio but it may be that other audio such as stings etc might not be played, which would sound even clunkier.

O’Connell often talks over the last 20 seconds of songs and they’re still being uploaded on the podcast.

On Marty’s old podcast they played them talking over music which wasn’t playing on the pod.

Sounds like perhaps staff turnover over time, with nobody left from an earlier version fo the prod team that knew how to correctly license or otherwise avoid a copyright claim, leading to this now being a thing?
Either that, or some licensing terms have changed/updated and created a new problem for them.

Things like this you imagine would be largely accounted for in general broadcast radio models.
Or does radio generally have a “we promote labels artists, so we can use your catalogue for imaging” grey area kinda rule?

The show will be broadcast from April 14 to 24, excluding public holidays.

Turns out that the copyright issue was raised by Spotify. It’s because the podcasts are available on platforms like Spotify, who have said that the artists have to be paid for the use of their music in podcasts.

I guess this means certain segments will be gone forever from the podcast like Joel Jivin’ where they play a track and stop it at a point where Rikki-Lee and Joel have to sing the next line. Also, things like New Music Friday where they showcase new releases will be gone. Same goes for interviews where they use the music by the artists or when they compile parts from songs as part of a intro to segments or as a running gag.

Listen to Ricki-Lee, Tim & Joel episode Full-ish Show: Piss Foot! - Ricki-Lee, Tim & Joel - Omny.fm

You also need to listen to all the podcasts now because the shorter ones are no longer included in the Full Show podcast. Still hacked out a lot of content but it’s also divided up.

They mentioned that Nova podcasts have been the last ones to comply. They must have been resisting it but had legal threats made now.

It sounds like it’s related to this specific policy from Spotify based on what Tim said in the most recent episode.

Likely an automatic flagging happening, like what happens on YouTube. Which is why the nuance of “it’s just 20 seconds” doesn’t work.

Listened to Rikki-Lee, Tim and Joel live yesterday. They do use music throughout the whole show and the songs are part of running gags. Too difficult to snip around all of them. So much can’t be in the podcast so that’s going to be disappointing.

In the intros to the podcast this week they’ve been talking about all the negative comments they’ve received this week about the podcast being ripped to shreds.

They said that if they leave the music in the podcast then they risk Spotify removing them from the platform. What’s worse though? Spotify drops them or lusteners abandoning them completely. Lose lose.

Good time to promote Nova app and the full thing available exclusively there?
