Nine (WIN)

Baffles me as to why they removed their WIN TV Facebook page all those years ago. They must hate having contact with their viewer base.

I note your explanation of the notion of a ‘network’ - as in fact a network is a group or system of interconnected people or things.

I find it interesting that you question the ‘value’ on whether WIN Television or any other regional television network should be called a ‘network’ because they don’t produce programs, or think it makes them sound bigger, where as in fact the regional network of stations in Australia are responsible for many programs produced in Australia.

Doesn’t ‘News’ count for a program, where in Tasmania, WIN Television and Southern Cross Austereo produce a daily one-hour news bulletin each day. (a combined 712 hours a year of local programming). Let alone the many ‘half hour’ local bulletins produced around Australia’s regions for WIN Television, Southern Cross, NBN and Prime TV. You can add cooking, travel and fishing programs to this list, not to mention the many hundreds of commercials produced in house each year for local consumption.

In fact as a combined audience the regional stations reach a potential audience of nearly 8 million people, I think that sounds ‘big’ enough to be called networks.

To remind us all, the government of the 1980s introduced a system of regional equalisation, known as aggregation, which would provide regional viewers with the same viewing choice as their metropolitan counterparts, and Australia’s regional stations protested at this proposal, arguing that their profits would fall, and that local program production output would also suffer due to the costs of purchasing either Nine, Ten or Seven programs. Guess what this is exactly what happened. They however offered their own proposal, whereby the existing regional station would be allowed to operate relays of the other two networks, allowing a combination of both viewer choice and local programming.

In essence the regional stations were forced into aggregation and away from determining their own future, many programs were lost as were full time jobs across the country. I’m not sure that calling yourself a ‘Network’ is done to make anyone sound bigger but to continue to good work they do in training cameramen, journalists, editors and news producers in their own regions as a stepping stone to possible work in a metro newsroom. Which is where they lose most of their good people.

To me WIN, Southern Cross, NBN and Prime all will continue to be know as ‘networks’ as they operate in the true sense of the word.

I don’t agree

You can’t be an “affiliate” and a “network”

An affiliate like WIN is 100% reliant on a network to even exist. We know that as as soon as Ninw dumped WIN they had to scramble to find a new network to affiliate with. And there was talk that if they don’t, Bruce will shut WIN down - as it would be essentially worthless.

When you rely on your network to provide 23 hours a day of programming, you’re a station, or in WINs case a station group.

WIN does not develop or produce drama, comedy, reality, game shows. It does not buy shows on the open market. It does not program a schedule (with the exception of 6pm) it does not have affiliates that it down sells its programming to. Heck, it doesn’t event have a Facebook page!

When news breaks, WIN Taps into its network. When big sporting rights are up doe grabs. WiN does not bid. WIN does not develop programming.

It does not function like a tv network in the sense of the word. Like
The sevens nines tens ABC CBS bbc ABC fox NBC and CBS of the world.

Yes, it has network of stations. But as a tv station group it is completely reliant on its parent network to make revenue. If WIN did not have Ten or Nine it would not be able to program more than a couple of hours a day

In the US, something like WIN is called a station group. In Canada its a tv system. Both are different to networks. Take Tribune, it’s owns about 65 tv stations across America. They produce tens of thousands of hours
Programming and news a year. Tribune has stations in NYC LA Chicago Dallas Philly all the major markets. Yet it’s not a network. It’s a station. Group.

WIN likes to think it’s a network. But it’s an affiliate. A station group a best

I saw promo with Carrie, Pete and Waleed for The Project promoting the show coming to WIN.

Had a Project promo endboard with the WIN logo.

Was not recording.

Agreed. We’re not America, “Network” is not a word that carries such specific meaning here. WIN using the word network just distinguishes WIN Television - the main channel, from the WIN multiplex. Same as the difference between “Channel Ten” and the “Ten Network”.

Looks like a very slight tweak to the WIN logo colouring, which makes it look fine for use as a Ten affiliate. I’d expect them not to change logos - apart from WIN HD, which has Nine’s HD lettering.

A bit hard to tell from a camera to TV pic but it also looks like some of the Nine-style gloss has been removed from the WIN logo…if you know what I mean.

Aside from that, it’s very much a Ten-style promo endtag graphically.

I guess this might mean no Ten style logo.

Not even ten metro get anywhere near close to a news promo. Ten can bother to make their presenters record that for win but won’t make their own one for their own network.

Ahh, it’s like stepping back in time for me. Welcome home, Ten. Welcome home. :stuck_out_tongue:

Had a bit of a laugh when the WIN brand didn’t get a mention from the commentators tonight during the NRL games… instead:

You’re watching Friday Night Footy across the Nine and associated network.

Also, I’m pretty sure that on Monday none of the presenters said that we were watching the Gold Telethon “on Nine, WIN and NBN” as has been a usual custom for this local broadcast for Sydney/NSW in previous years.

That said, the “Broadcasting Partners” Sponsor Billboard (which also mentioned NBN Television and included it’s logo rather than the current 9NBN brand but that’s another story…) shown during the Gold Telethon still mentioned WIN Television (probably one of the last times we’ll ever hear that phrase on Nine!) and included a really dodgy-looking WIN Network “map of Australia” logo which was probably plucked off Google Images! :stuck_out_tongue:

I wonder whether sponsorship for WIN Stadium in Wollongong will continue or stop? That could be interesting when Nine next broadcast an NRL match there after July 1.

Nine will probably just refer to it using a generic name like “Wollongong Stadium,” the same way the ABC don’t refer to sponsor names when referring to stadiums. On a similar note, News Corp newspapers such as the Herald Sun don’t refer to Domain Stadium by its sponsored name because Domain (real estate website) is owned by rival Fairfax.

If Bruce Gordon buys 50% of the Dragons, as has been expected but there has been nothing official yet (has there?), maybe the WIN name will end up on the team shirt sleeve or shorts. And Nine wouldn’t be able to do anything, would they.
