Nine (WIN)

Ten would need to vastly improve the flow of their news service if they were going to provide anything resembling a strong lead in for WIN News.

The leadin for WIN News would be the worst part of Ten News - their terrible weather segments. If Ten want to make this work for WIN - they should bring Weather inside the studio - cut the waffle, and end with a recap of the national news.

Ideally doing it so that there’s headlines on Ten, and a throw to the Project, but on WIN the news carries on for another 5-10 minutes with a compressed bulletin focusing on major national/international news/sport.

I think viewers need to be able to see a complete news Service, without needing to watch from 5pm through to 6:30 - which is a much tougher ask than 6-7:30.

The article is inaccurate in showing broadcast areas. For example it shows win broadcasting in the spencer gulf whic it does not.

“Southern Cross gains Millionaire Hot Seat, the Footy Shows, A Current Affair, National Rugby League, cricket test matches, The Voice, 60 Minutes, the Today Show, Bold and the Beautiful”

Sorry Declan but I don’t think Southern Cross will be gaining Bold and the Beautiful.

Wow, Ten should fix that for themselves not just WIN.

To try and stop people turning to 9 or 7 for news at six, Ten News should do a headline summary at 5.55 right up to 6pm. The top stories - one last live cross and a 20 second weather hit all at 5.55. Hosts around the country should say

“For our WIN viewers your local WIN News is up right now, for everyone else - Good night”

hosted by The Goldbergs for sure.

If SCA wanted people to watch their news at 6, surely they should run full page local newspaper ads with Tim Bailey and Geoff Phillips’ heads… then something like “The News Looks Better on Nine”.

WIN Wagga’s GM just let the cat out of the bag:

“People don’t really follow a particular channel, they will follow their favourite programs,” Mr Irvin said.

well NO SHIT… and that means WIN’s ratings are going down the toilet quicker than Amber Heard’s engagement ring.

Bye bye WIN News in 2017… hello rip-reads.

I agree, I think WIN will revert to noodle updates not long after SCA get their regional bulletins up and running.

I think only the major WIN markets, such as Wollongong, have any real hope of a full bulletin lasting any longer than that.

I don’t see why WIN can’t be very competitive.

They can win the 4 o’clock hour with Bold and new Family Feud (potentially). They can win the 5 o’clock hour with Ten News. Speaking of that hour, I would think about increasing the WIN presence in the 5-6pm space - i.e. flood the hour with teases, promos, local weather teases every commercial break. WIN News can do well at 6. The challenge is 6:30-7:30, but even there you have strong demos and a show that has momentum.

Gotta ask… But what’s with this new family feud you keep talking about? It’s not like they are going to show old family feud.

Well, I’ve seen on this forum talk of rpt Family Feud at 4:30 - in other words, last night’s Feud (broadcast on 11 and ONE). So, to be clear, I’m talking about new FF on WIN at 4:30, and that same episode on 11 and One at 6 pm.

Using that logic, SC10 would currently be winning the 4:30-6:30 period when all 3 programs air on SC10 currently, but that just doesn’t happen.
In my area at least, TEN just isn’t watched by many people, and there’s no real reason why that’s going to change when WIN take over.

TEN News is the most irrelevant of all the metro bulletins in my area, and is honestly going to be a terrible lead in to WIN News.

In the end, 7 Local News will always be the #1 watched news bulletin in Regional QLD, the new SC9 News will likely rate okay, especially on NRL nights, and WIN News will probably come in at a distant 3rd.

So personally I think WIN News will see a massive ratings drop in most markets once TEN affiliation begins.

Family Feud doesn’t currently air at 4:30.

What are the 5:30 ratings in your area?

RegionalTAM figures are not permit on this forum jens, so specific figures cannot be quoted.
In saying that though, SC10’s market share is often <10% in this area, and TEN News rates so poorly it never even gets a mention on the ratings lists.

Family Feud does rate in this area at 6:00pm, let alone 4:30pm, and that point is rather irrelevant to what i’m talking about, which is the lead in to WIN News

Here’s an interesting document from ACMA, which includes ratings details by each regional sub-market on the performance of local & state/national news bulletins in 2012: http://www.acma.gov.au/~/media/Diversity%20Localism%20and%20Accessibility/Research/pdf/Attachment%20D%20%20Regional%20Australian%20television%20news%20%20audiences%20across%20regional%20evening%20news%20services_final%20pdf.pdf

Sure, WIN has a challenge. It calls for absolute smart strategy. Here are some ideas off the top of my head:

  • Flood the airwaves with WIN marketing - in place of every wasteful second of TEN airtime.
  • Maybe think about things like more WIN idents between shows.
  • Increased WIN promos to sell the message that (pick one):
  • a) WIN has always been there… it’s the old favourite, the “We’re With You”
  • b) WIN knows local news. “We Are Local”. We do local news everywhere, nobody can match us.
  • c) WIN’s got the people. Geoff and …bla bla. “The Who’s Who…”
  • d) “WIN News! We’re With WIN. WIN News! It’s a WIN WIN!”… Make up a song.
  • e) WIN has the TEN attitude. Remember the “Right Here, Right Now” ads…

Those are (not literal) suggestions, just ideas to throw around.

Sounds like a “WIN WIN” situation to me. :stuck_out_tongue:

The promos are needed, but I think perhaps WIN’s 3rd or 4th priority. They need to remind people of something they do really value… and that offering itself is first priority. 2nd priority is how that fits with TEN content in a good combination.

So what are the unique things? WIN News, All Australia News, Alive and Cooking. Do they add a distinct valuable regional service that their viewers want? Is Alive and Cooking good, and/or is it regional enough? (There’s also Extra, and possibly Ellen, both of which are distinctly not regional Australia).

As for TEN’s content we can assume that unless WIN intersperse their unique value effectively then viewers will simply think 9 and 10 have flipped channels.

The comments I’ve seen on All Australian News aren’t that positive, but TBH I’m not sure the midday lineup in Australia is particularly brilliant. So All Australian News & Alive and Cooking are WIN’s regional tools to get people watching at midday, and they also let them remove 1h30 of the least effective TEN programs in the daytime schedule.

Same goes for their WIN 30 minute news at night. Can they keep viewers after? No matter how well The Project rates, if the audience that like WIN regional news does not like the ‘different’ style of The Project then it won’t capitalise on the regional news pull… I’m not sure what those audiences are though.

Difficult job for WIN.
