Nine (WIN)

…and the Gold Coast too it seems (Video credit: Joe Smith):

Judging by that clip, very basic attempt at making a radio show work on TV and can probably understand why the format didn’t last that long!

Wow thanks for that - it’s an interesting watch.
I too am not surprised that it didn’t last either… it’s easy to forget just how different radio and TV are - the extra effort required in changing cameras etc isn’t to be overlooked, but the biggest is how the presenters handle themselves. They’re obviously awkward with the camera’s, which isn’t surprising given how scripted TV tends to be compared to radio - it really seems like the sort of thing that the presenters wouldn’t be overly comfortable with and will end up with a product that’s neither good tv nor radio.
At least when radio stations stream segments live a) it’s usually only for a short time, and b) the audience is actually expecting to see the radio side of things - not a TV show that happens to be set in a radio studio.

For this sort of format to really work it would need to be treated more as a TV show that just happens to also be on the radio - but that brings with it the extra costs of sets, wardrobe, makeup etc.

I think the format can absolutely work.

I reckon a lot of the awkwardness stems from the fact that the presenters are acknowledging the presence of the cameras, and the way that the shots facing the main presenter + newsreader are too close up. They should be offset to the side so it looks like you’re gazing in from the control room (0:08 is a good example of what I mean), rather than sitting in front of them. The secondary presenters look far more natural and if all the shots were like that, it would be very watchable.

Radio New Zealand’s “Checkpoint With John Campbell” seems to have the ‘radio with pictures’ format done pretty well.

Big sports breakfast is on sky racing channel as well as 2ky radio.

If the joint venture TDT becomes 9 affiliate, will that take on 9 branding as they have currently only used 10 branding all their life - sometimes with the addition of “Tasmanian Digital Television” or “TDT” and the other interesting thing will be news coverage. They currently have Ten Eyewitness News from Melbourne and the noodle updates, could they just switch to showing us Nine’s Melbourne news? Would there be noodle updates produced in the 9 style to be shown in Tas or can WIN actually show WIN News on TDT and have it simulcast on both stations?[/quote]More than likely on both counts. TDT would be exactly as it is currently now - as a direct feed of Ten, but would be a direct feed of Nine instead (Nine’s Melbourne News would likely air like Ten’s Melbourne News does right now I’d imagine). No idea what they’d do with any local News content for it (might continue as is but in a Nine News style instead?), but I realistically can’t see WIN’s News being simulcast on both channels though. WIN News (Ten) would just air on their own channel.

Another article about Win and Ten
What Ten stands to gain

It seems that Ten will get bang for its buck in terms of programming reach in regional areas, with “more than six million viewers across 23 markets around the country”, greater than it currently has with Southern Cross.

Something I was thinking of last night that may benefit WIN after the changeover (along the same principle as to why they’ve decided to keep LCN 8).

I’ve noticed a fair few businesses (cafes, places with waiting rooms, etc.) i’ve visited around Townsville recently always have WIN airing on the TV 24/7.

Obviously there are also businesses which have 7QLD on too.

But it’ll be interesting to see whether these businesses that currently show WIN swap over to NINE or continue showing WIN after July 1.

Assuming they continue with WIN, that is likely to be parts of WIN’s reasoning for keeping LCN 8, in the sense that people won’t realise 8 is different from before.

Why can’t they have the Ten watermark so people don’t get confused (elderly perhaps) but have Win in small letters above it

WIN
Ten

Surely Ten won’t want their logo to go . Will it say between programs you are on Win ? Welcome Home ? or the usual Ten stuff .

Or a Win watermark and no Ten watermark?

WIN’s track record is cover-up city. I think you will see WIN everywhere and no mention of ten.

No one knows yet.
It would seem the general consensus is that WIN will be the on air brand, and there will be little to no mention of Ten. WIN is losing it’s top rated Nine programming, and they see value in keeping their 30 year of TV Brand.

Maybe there will be a new logo that somehow references the partnership with Ten - or maybe it will just stay how it is.

Maybe WIN will cover up the Ten logo on even Ten News at 5 - and version all it’s own promos, or maybe Ten pushed to have just the Ten logo on it’s news programming.

Yes, viewers in QLD, SNSW, ACT and VIC (some 5-6 million people) have known Ten as Ten for the last decade and I would imagine Ten has some concerns about their brand disappearing in those areas. But I think all the things would have come up in the affiliate discussions - and have already been agreed upon.

Come July 1 if it is just WIN, Ten, WIN Ten or dual branding or whatever - I think it would have been agreed upon by both parties.

The comments made by Ten and WIN that they’ll be co-operating on their news operations are interesting. It might not be a matter of WIN adding their own news content - WIN already does it and wouldn’t need to talk about co-operation in that sense.

So I presume it means working together on new News style programs, or cross pollenating each others news. There’s no reason that All Australian News couldn’t use something like The Project “Saving our Farmers”, or insert this kind of “article” in a morning show if they made one as a segment.

they sort of do this in their SA markets. From what I’ve seen of WIN Ten SA a few years ago I saw the dual WIN (minus dotty) next to the Ten logo on commercials for various festivals and events in the area in this WIN sponsors, and also the odd promo, there was one on Youtube with Mark Aiston (then Ten’s Adelaide sports anchor and boundary rider on Ten’s AFL games in Adelaide) saying something like “see all the sports action on Ten News on WIN Ten in the South East”, then the abovementioned logo appears on the screen, and WIN’s “Mr Tostesterone” voice over man says “WIN Ten in the South East”. All other promos are the same as the metro and Southern Cross Tens.

Or just carrying TEN News is co-operation enough. Press releases always dress it up.

when its win made programs use win watermark when its 10 use tens watermark

because that won’t confuse viewers.

I’d bet on option 2 at this stage. Option 3 is one I’m just putting out there - call it the “WIN roadblock” option. WIN may be hesitant to put their local news at 6 against Nine News - they may also like to keep their news at 7. If so, it just occurred to me that WIN may benefit from a WIN-made ‘national news’ - or ‘state-news’ - at 6. Option 3 basically puts WIN News all over two key timeslots… I guess they’re all kind of interesting options. Even option 6 has merit.

Roy Masters article talking a little bit about the switch. h_e NRL expects Nine’s decision to partner with Southern Cross in regional Queensland, southern NSW and Victoria from July 1, to cause a drop off in regional viewership, and therefore have an impact on national viewer numbers.
Goes on to say _Nine has severed its relationship with WIN where there is strong incumbency in NSW, This incumbency could see a drop off in southern NSW audience numbers for NRL, as viewers are asked to switch to the weaker Southern Cross.
The NRL anticipates a similar trend in regional Queensland although more moderate, owing to Queensland’s preference for Prime. Long-term, the new Nine/Southern Cross partnership is expected to boost overall numbers because of the cross promotional opportunities.

Roy Masters needs to do his research. Seven themselves own and operate the regional Queensland Seven network stations, not Prime7!
