Actually it’s all pretty similar, it’s not very very different at all
Sure, The are regional and local differences between any two markets be it two metro markets, two regional markets or a metro and a regional market. just as there are differences between say Sydney and Melbourne, Brisbane and cairns or Newcastle and Adelaide - but mostly Australians watch by and large the same shows nationwide
Pick any two markets and there are SOME differences however
Are there any markets where WIN was the #1 or even #2 station/network in 2020?
I can understand how the Seven affiliates perform well, but a lot of Network Ten’s primetime shows are aimed at a demographic which seems to be largely niche to non-existent in much of regional Australia. Put it this way, I’d be extremely surprised if shows like The Bachelor/ette are going gangbusters in places like Cairns, Wagga or Bendigo!
Anecdotally, I still occasionally see people getting WIN and Nine mixed up - e.g. switching to WIN for the rugby league. This is four years after the affiliation swap.
WIN could make a statement if Bruce Gordon really wanted to.
Each week, overnight infomercials on the main channel average 20 hours per week. It would be quite easy to spread this across 10Bold and 10Peach by screening infomercials 12:30am to 2:30am each day on 10Bold and screening Infomercials an additional hour on 10Peach Monday to Saturday at 3:30am, adding infomercials on 10Peach 10am to 11am weekdays and on 10Bold at 11am weekdays.
Ten could then screen Sky News programs in the early morning in a similar format to what Seven did with News Overnight in the 1980s.
The Late Show could move to 10Peach at 1:30am weekdays.
I think the major networks know all if Bruce Gordon’s tricks by now and know he doesn’t have the ability to execute his threats
Please note the ratings figures include Northern NSW, which is NBN9 territory not SCA9, and given Newcastle is NBN’s home city and the second biggest city in NSW, it is possible that this is the reason for the narrow gap.
I would like to see the breakdown of the three markets and what each regions figures were for each affiliate
Those shows don’t go gangbusters anywhere. But why would they underperform (which is what I think you’re suggesting) the markets you list? Are there parallels between tropical Cairns and inland cold ballarat viewing choices that you know of? Do they not like Dating shows?
No, but it’s to my understanding that people who reside in regional Australia (especially outside the major areas) have very different mindsets to those of those who live in metropolitan areas.
Regional residents, please prove this Sydneysider wrong if you’ve got any compelling evidence to share.
I’m sure Ten would disagree and be reasonably happy with the ratings of Bachelor/ette in metropolitan markets, especially given the amount of times they’ve boasted about the performance of those shows in key demographics.
Off-topic, but I take it that this is what’s stopping MS covering Regional TAM ratings results (outside of press releases etc.)? Would be good to have access but can understand the financial barrier.
I wouldn’t rely on what the network’s say about multiple markets.
It’s all about promotion and interpretation. As an example, up until 2017, WIN could have marketed themselves as Number 1 for Local News in the Illawarra or Canberra, as even as the Ten affiliate, up until SCA started their 1 hour composite bulletin in February 2017, WIN were the only channel to offer anything more than noodle updates in those regions.
NBN9 could market themselves the same in Newcastle - which is why I would love to see the real figures especially in Newcastle, given Newcastle has a significant proportion of northern NSW population combined with Central Coast NSW.
It’s all about promotion and how you manipulate the figures
Working out what regional viewers watch and why is just as hard as determining why shows work in the metro markets. But I would agree that some genres rate comparatively lower in regional areas including dating or relationship shows (except for Farmer Wants A Wife) and quite a few reality shows in general - Big Brother didn’t perform as well regionally.
However other types of shows fill that gap with drama including US drama comparatively more popular possibly because of the lower penetration of Foxtel.
Looking a last night for example NCIS: Los Angeles that airs post 9:30pm on WIN made the top 10 in all key demo groups. This was the regional top 10 yesterday in 25-54
1 Seven SEVEN NEWS
2 Seven SEVEN NEWS AT 6.30
3 Seven THE CHASE AUSTRALIA
4 10 AMBULANCE AUSTRALIA RPT
5 Seven BORDER SECURITY - AUSTRALIA’S FRONT LINE
6 10 NCIS
7 10 THE PROJECT 7PM
8 10 NCIS: LOS ANGELES
9 Seven SUNRISE
10 Seven THE CHASE AUSTRALIA-5PM
And, of course, multichannels do very well in the regions.
