One of the advantages of using MPEG-4 for 9Life I guess. Thanks for the bitrate reports!
Hard to say - they look very similar. WIN’s version (in MPEG-4) has less macroblocking but Nine’s version (in MPEG-2) has more fine detail retention.
Bitrates for the same 10-minute period:
9Life (9 Sydney): 3.68 Mbps MPEG-2
9Life (WIN Illawarra): 2.53 Mbps MPEG-4
Can upconverted HD ever look that good ?
In my opinion, no. You can’t make up what’s not there to begin with. If upconversion could look “that good”, there’d be no point in shooting anything in HD in the first place, if upconversion is equivalent. Clearly, it isn’t, as can be seen in my WIN/Nine comparison screenshot from TBBT.
Thanks for that update. WINHD looked sharp watching the Habibs just now.
Have a look at this same-frame comparison I uploaded between WIN and Nine HD (hover on the image to see the Nine HD version):

The easiest place to see the difference is the detail in the black area in the top-left corner of the tray and also the fine details just below the watermark. WIN is clearly much superior.
They’re both using MPEG-4 though. I’d have thought they would have both been equal in quality but they aren’t.
Wow, WIN is heaps better on the fine detail - though probably less noticeable when in motion.
Too bad the quality of their watermark doesn’t match.
This is one of those assumptions that only Media Spy members would assume is the norm when it’s really something less than 1% of ‘regular viewers’ would care about (except for sport of course)
I have a feeling that NQCQTV is kidding…
Yes, for the other 99.99% of the population that are “normal” TV watchers, I don’t think HD will make one iota of difference to viewing choices, particularly breakfast TV.
Yep. I’d be willing to predict that the Wednesday night ratings of the SD-only My Kitchen Rules on Seven against the “Available in HD…where available” Nine and Ten offerings will prove that Australians really don’t care whether a program is accessable HD or not!
Maybe people in certain agegroups care about HD more than others.
Had a look at Win’s 9Life. For an SD channel it looks very good in picture quality.
Channels up in tassie
That’s good Have stuffed up Gem in Tassie yet.
Yes
Great to see the new channels up in Tassie. I was a bit hard on WIN … they must have worked their bums off tonight to get them up. Just a technical question - all WIN stations are now in the 353 - 358 region. Would this be because of Hobart’s Topography (lots of hills and the mountain of course) OR will they come down to 80 - 88 in the coming days when all the wrinkles (like GEM aspect ratio) are ironed out?
Just temporary - happened in some places but was corrected fairly quickly. At the time it meant that WIN wasn’t transmitting a list of channel numbers for the TV/PVR to use so they default to 350+
Thanks very much for that. Just got a personal tweet from Wintv local newsreader letting me know channels were up (and as you said) the LCNs will settle down to normal soon! Good service WIN.
Knew they were doing something when I rescanned about 11:45 and they were missing at times but then came back as normal so I went to bed. Just woke up and found WIN not working, rescanned and we have 9 channels (a few appearing a few times) and all are in the 350-359 range at the moment on my TV.
i noticed when i watched 9life when they show whats on tonight they show the metro 9Hd ident instead of
WinHD lol
