I saw they are trying to make GEM more widescreen but they can’t yet. But win is trying.
Big Bang Theory is on at the moment. WIN is ahead of Nine a fair bit, but on WIN, it’s an SD upconvert; on Nine, however, it’s in native HD.

Less intrusive, but it looks dodgy. Reminds me of that WWOS one they did a few years ago that only covered the centre.
If I had an opportunity to design one, I’d make it fit the Nine News look and have it serve some purpose other than covering up a logo. I’d also not use the term “WIN News” because it’s not WIN News.

Left half of this screenshot is from WIN HD and the right half is from Nine HD. If you open it up at full size and look at the text, it’s a world of difference. Definitely not in HD on WIN. It seems that when WIN are running ahead of Nine, they only get an SD feed.

Yes, as is evident on the right half of that screenshot (from Nine HD) which is native HD.
WIN has aired TBBT earlier than Nine plenty of times in the past. I think this is because they insert WIN News at 7pm and it doesn’t run into overtime like ACA. They probably prefer to start TBBT earlier so they can pad out the overtime with commercials until they match up with Nine’s schedule at 8 or 8.30pm. Looks like they’re still using “old” equipment to record that day’s episode.

even 9 news was in Native HD
I remember when WIN airs TBBT ahead of Nine at the 7:30pm timeslot, the picture quality in its main SD channel (this was way before the launch of its HD simulcast was even though of) was (& probably still is) better than when it’s simultaneously relayed from Nine.
This was the Queensland version of the cover up
The local WIN News was an up-covert but OMG terrible quality

While it might be in better quality than Nine’s SD-produced bulletin, I’m somehow I can’t quite convince myself that WIN’s coverup is in native HD.
The picture quality of WIN News…definitely an upconvert for sure!
I’m watching WIN HD Illawarra and Nine HD Sydney synchronised side-by-side on my 4K monitor (so I can see the full 1920x1080 image) and the image quality is definitely better on WIN HD. There’s more fine detail/grain retention. Who’d have thought that WIN would go from its horrible oversharpened SD service to having better image quality than Nine itself.
Edit: Five-minute bitrate sample at the same time for WIN and Nine:
WIN HD: 5.19 Mbps
Nine HD: 4.09 Mbps
That would explain why WIN HD looks better.
