9GEM is incorrectly broadcasting as 4:3 on all shows and adverts TV_Adict.
Hopefully WIN will get onto fixing it soon
I don’t remember WIN GEM ever looking as clear and as good as WIN HD looks now. Can’t tell if Gem’s HD was as good as Win’s HD now .

Bitrates currently for WIN Illawarra with a five-minute sample:
- WIN SD: 3.57 Mbps
- WIN HD: 5.00 Mbps (MPEG-4)
- Gem: 2.48 Mbps
- Go!: 4.73 Mbps
- Gold: 1.80 Mbps (MPEG-4)
- Extra: 0.55 Mbps (MPEG-4)
- Life: 1.73 Mbps (MPEG-4)
- Null packets: 0.61 Mbps
For a 0.5 Mbps stream at 720x576i, Extra looks ok (for its bitrate). They should bump Gold down to 0.5 Mbps as well.

The aspect ratio looks 4:3 to me and the EPG is not right. Seems there’s some problems at mediahub. Otherwise all other WIN channels look fine to me.
Would we have to do a retune to fix the missing EPG or the 4:3 aspect ratio issue ? Or it will not need one.
Was I meant to retune for these channels ? Every channel did add itself .
What are null packets ?
The mux always transmits at 23mbps; if the broadcaster isn’t using up all of that 23mbps, they have to broadcast filler data (i.e. null packets) which don’t really contain audio/video content (e.g. could be all 0s or all 1s).
Also, I think this makes WIN the first broadcaster in Australia to have a majority of their terrestrial broadcast channels in MPEG-4.

These are issues at WIN. Retuning at the moment wouldn’t resolve it.
I’ll cut down on the quantity of questions . Not as knowledgeable about it all . So don’t want to start talking about something I don’t understand if that makes sense.

I would have to agree with the comment about 9GEM in HD never looking near as good as WIN HD currently looks.
Rang win network in Tassie they said should be up and running this afternoon.(I hope)
Even SC One and 7Mate never look that fantastic in proper HD to the point I thought it was my television. This is in Central Qld though. A few years ago I remember watching Family Guy on 7mate in a capital city and it looked very sharp and clear in HD.
Win’s the only HD channel looking good here .
Such as the one that rhymes with Gruce Bordon.
