I agree. Isn’t RACING.COM around 1mbps and a resolution of around 640x576? I think the picture quality of RACING.COM (via Seven) looks OK but I don’t think I’d say better than the main channel.
So WIN HD as claimed by WIN may not be as good quality in real life?
It’s arguable that the whole “…has never looked so good” line by Nine/WIN and Ten is marketing spin. Do the lucky viewers who had the opportunity to watch HD in the pre-multichanneling era think that the current HD quality is better than it has ever been before?
640 x 578 - in Brisbane it is running 2.24 MBps
Well, their MPEG-2 SD channels are a joke. What’s to say their new HD channel won’t suffer the same issues? WIN Gem, the only example of HD via WIN I have seen, hasn’t always looked like a true HD service. I distinctively remember NRL broadcasts that have looked absolutely terrible. Worse than SD.
But at other times it’s looked amazing.
I don’t know if these are airing on TV or are just online-only things (these clips come from WIN’s YouTube channel), but it’s interesting to see Nine personalities do short promos for WIN HD including Yvonne Sampson:
…and some of the Here Come The Habibs cast:
WIN News Illawarra report about WIN HD and 9Life:
They make it sound like 9Life is going to be HD as well. Also there is no mention of either channel being broadcast in MPEG4, which means there are going to be some surprises on Tuesday I would imagine.
This same report aired tonight on the North Queensland bulletin as well.
I was really annoyed that they never mentioned MPEG-4.
Even the guy saying something about “it’ll show up automatically on newer TVs, but if it doesn’t a simple rescan will fix it” or whatever… that really annoyed me!
I can understand why WIN did that.
I think they didn’t want to get too technical…
Most viewers wouldn’t really know what MPEG4 is.
It’s still important to know that older sets won’t receive the new channels.
While I do agree, it’s still quite important for the networks to let viewers know that not all TV sets will pick up the new channels, while reassuring them that they’ll still be able to see the existing services.
Honestly, how much of the general viewing public (as opposed to “people in the know” like us) know the difference between MPEG2/MPEG4 encoded broadcasts…or even understand what it’s about at all? My guess is almost certainly very few, if any regular viewers would know what this technological terminology is all about.
Yes I still like to know when Tasmania gets win HD & 9life still waiting for test slide channels
I’m in Hobart Tasmania and yes no slides. But WIN promos are becoming more frequent and quoting March 1 for the big day so I think we are all good. Who cares if we don’t get slides. Maybe too close to March 1 for them to worry about test slides when the LCN’s are going to change anyway.
If your TV can get Racing.com channel (68) then it will be OK for WinHD as it uses MPEG-4. BTW MPEG4 does not mean automatic HD just a more efficient video compressor.
Thus when Southern Cross agreed to host Racing.com, they used MPEG4 in combination with a low bitrate to coexist with their Channel 7 ones (SC, 7Mate, Go etc…).
WinHD should use a much higher bitrate for its HD channel.
Tasmanian viewers: there is an advertisement in the Launceston Examiner newspaper about the channels so even though they aren’t showing up yet I see no reason why we won’t get them the same time as the rest of the network.
WIN rescan promo with Amy Duggan.
Version 2
The rescan and 9Life prelaunch promos were on high rotation during WIN News Tasmania tonight.
I’m surprised the date format on the placeholder channels hasn’t sent the forum into a meltdown.
I’m hoping the WIN HD channel just pops up in HD and I don’t need to rescan. Every time I rescan I have to go through the numerous shopping channels to skip them lol.
What type of sound is Nine HD in ? and Win HD would be in ? Dolby Digital ? AAC ?
