Probably contractually obliged.
Hurricanes the only side not to play in either a SRTT or SRA final from the NZ teams this season
Stan Sport’s coverage of Super W and South Africa’s Currie Cup also began today.
The 2 week COVID lockdown in Greater Sydney means there will be no Shute Shield coverage on Stan Sport this weekend and next weekend, however Super W can continue as it is held entirely at Coffs Harbour.
That means Brisbane will host the first and third tests against France, with the second test in Melbourne.
The SCG however will host the Rugby Championship match between Australia and South Africa on Sunday, September 12, at 3pm AEST, with the Springboks as the home team.
The first test between Australia and France will be shown live on 9Gem in all states, from 7.30pm AEST on Wednesday.
Stan’s international test coverage starts today with a doubleheader from New Zealand: NZ Maori v Samoa followed by All Blacks v Tonga. Stan also is streaming today’s Super W final between Waratahs and Reds from Coffs Harbour.
Quite rare for a test match to be midweek. Was that always the plan or did restrictions force a reschedule? Probably a better slot for Gem than at the weekend.
They’re playing the series over 11 days due to Covid restrictions/player availability.
Interesting to see Nine is giving the Wallabies test against France on Saturday 17 July main channel treatment across Australia.

GAME 1 TOMORROW NIGHT ON STAN SPORT AND 9GEM
The Wallabies make their debut on Stan Sport and 9Gem this Wednesday night at Suncorp Stadium in Brisbane, with extended ad-free coverage on Stan Sport from 7:15pm AEST, and from 7:30pm on 9Gem.
They will face off against France, for the first time on Australian soil since 2014, in the eToro three-match test series. Australia and France have a fierce head-to-head rivalry, with many of their recent meetings having been decided by only a handful of points.
Coverage will be presented by Stan Sport and Wide World of Sports’ incredible commentary lineup, hosted by Roz Kelly and Nick McArdle, and featuring ex-Wallabies superstars including Tim Horan, David Campese, Drew Mitchell, Morgan Turinui and Justin Harrison to break down every minute of the action.
The Wallabies will be captained once again by Michael Hooper, their most experienced player competing in his 106th test for his country. He is joined by a host of Super Rugby AU stars in Waratahs captain Jake Gordon, Brumbies captain Allan Alaalatoa and Reds powerhouse Taniela Tupou.
Coach Dave Rennie has also named rookie Noah Lolesio in the team, who will join Gordon in a new-look halves pairing.
Meanwhile, ‘les Bleus’ will be fielding an exciting side packed with youthful exuberance, with several rookies among the pack.
Coach Fabien Galthie has put placed the captaincy on impressive flanker Anthony Jelonch, alongside other young talented French stars including Louis Carbonel, Jean-Baptiste Gros and Arthur Vincent – whom all starred in France’s single point victory over Australia in the 2019 World Rugby Under 20 Championship.
Fans in Brisbane can get an unmissable 2-for-1 deal when they purchase a ticket for game 1 here.
For all the latest, tune in to Rugby Heaven on Stan Sport tonight from 8:00pm AEST as Wallabies legend Tim Horan exclusively goes behind-the-scenes in Wallabies camp to get all the latest ahead of the game.

Last Wednesday’s game (of Game 1) of the Wallabies - France Test rated well for Nine Gem, better than i expected.
Game 2 is on tonight, and think the coverage is pretty good.
Good coverage but the guy doing play by play is woeful,
Game 3 will be on the main channel in every market.

GAME 3 TOMORROW NIGHT ON STAN SPORT AND CHANNEL 9
The Wallabies take on France in the third and final Test match this Saturday night at Suncorp Stadium in Brisbane, with extended ad-free coverage on Stan Sport from 7:15pm AEST, and from 7:30pm AEST on Channel 9.
Australia snatched victory from the jaws of defeat after the siren in Game 1 in Brisbane with a penalty goal, before ‘Les Bleus’ returned fire with an almost identical finish in Game 2 this past Tuesday night in Melbourne to even the score.
In the 50th Test between the two nations, Game 3 tomorrow night will be back in front of a packed house at Suncorp Stadium in Brisbane, promising yet another nail-biting clash between these two evenly matched rivals, serving as the must-see decider for the eToro Test series.
Wallabies captain Michael Hooper has been an absolute workhorse, tireless in his work ethic, and has not missed a beat since his recent return from Japanese rugby.
Marika Koroibete has also been in phenomenal form, with the former John Eales medalist, punching holes through the French defence seemingly at will.French captain Anthony Jelonch has been similarly inspirational for his side, leading by example which his young charges have embraced.
All eyes will also be on rookie flyhalf Antoine Hastoy, on debut for les Bleus in a high-pressure environment.Coverage will be presented by Stan Sport and Wide World of Sports’ incredible commentary lineup, hosted by Roz Kelly and Nick McArdle, and featuring ex-Wallabies superstars including Tim Horan, David Campese, Drew Mitchell, Morgan Turinui and Justin Harrison, dual international Allana Ferguson, as well as All Blacks legends Sonny-Bill Williams and Andrew Mehrtens to break down every minute of the action.
Following this series, the highly anticipated Bledisloe Cup looms on the horizon, with the three-match series between the Wallabies and the All Blacks kicking off on Saturday, August 7th on Stan Sport and Nine.
WALLABIES vs FRANCE
HUGE SUCCESS OF TEST SERIES SMASHES 2020 RECORDS
The thrilling three-game eToro Test Series between the Wallabies and France concluded on Saturday night, with each of the three games going right down to the wire.
Australia trumped France 33-30 in the third game decider, with numbers through the roof for Rugby in Australia, and a tremendous way to kick off the Wallabies new home across Stan Sport, Channel 9, 9Gem and 9Now, with coverage spearheaded by hosts Roz Kelly and Nick McArdle , and a host of former Wallaby greats such as David Campese, Tim Horan and Drew Mitchell.
It was another rollercoaster of a match in front of a massive crowd at Suncorp Stadium, following a rocky start which saw explosive winger Marika Koroibete red carded in controversial circumstances, reducing Australia to just 14 men for the duration of the contest. But the Wallabies held strong, under inspirational guidance from captain Michael Hooper , and held their nerve to hold off the French resistance.
A total of 3,287,00 viewers tuned into the series across all three games on Channel 9, 9Gem and 9Now, noting that this does NOT include those tuning in to the extended, ad-free coverage on Stan Sport.
The average audience for Saturday night’s third Test on linear broadcast on Channel 9 was 691,000 (Metro: 496,000 / Regional: 195,000), peaking at 952,000 (Metro: 656,000 / Regional: 296,000) for the gripping finish.
For comparison, the Third test achieved an average audience 10% higher on linear broadcast alone than the highest-rating free-to-air rugby game of 2020 (on a different network) - the fourth and final game of the Bledisloe Cup Series against the All Blacks.
On 9Now, the Third Test experienced a live BVOD audience of 35,000 (up 11% from the 2nd Test), including 104,000 stream starts (up 13% from the 2nd Test) , and 4 million live minutes streamed (up 11% from the 2nd test).
Brent Williams, Nine’s Director of Sport , said “Following on from an incredible Wimbledon campaign, we couldn’t have asked for a better Wallabies debut on both Nine & STAN Sport. A huge number of Australians were drawn to the series against France and they were rewarded with incredibly exciting, last minute finishes in all three matches. With more great rugby just around the corner, it’s a brilliant time to be a fan.”
Stan Acting Chief Executive Officer Martin Kugeler said: “We are extremely pleased to see another record number of viewers on Stan Sport for Saturday’s decider, which was the highest performing match of the series. This capped off a massive day for rugby on Stan, with our exclusive coverage of matches between All Blacks and Fiji as well as Tonga and Samoa also being very popular. We have no doubt these numbers will only increase further with the highly anticipated Bledisloe Cup and The Rugby Championship series coming up on Stan Sport.”
