Nine/Stan Rugby Union Coverage

Yeah but that’s SOO. This is Rugby tests. Against France.

According to The Australian, ratings for 9Gem’s weekly telecast of Super Rugby had slumped by 57% in just two months. While Stan hasn’t released any audience numbers for its Super Rugby coverage, the ratings for the weekly free-to-air match screened on 9Gem fell away badly throughout the 10-week regular season, particularly in the key capital city markets.

The 57% is referring to the drop from the opening match on 9Gem to the round 10 match on 9Gem - it’s not a comparison with Fox Sports ratings. The comparison with Fox Sports in The Australian’s article is:

Rugby Union on 9Gem on Saturday nights, as some of us discussed the other week, may not be setting the world on fire with large shares/ratings as the channel used to have in the same timeslot. However, some weeks have been above 2% and the raw ratings available on MediaWeek, while really low, aren’t the lowest and are enough to draw an okay share over a lengthy run time. And as OnAir pointed out, it’d be more about the monetisation now from advertisers, compared to say old movie re-runs (it also made the Top 5 in a m/c key demo on Saturday night, as posted by Cynic this morning).

I wouldn’t be taking anything the Australian says seriously. They’re the bitter jilted ex lover of Rugby.

You need the Stan ratings for context too. If the fall is offset by a rise in people joining Stan to watch the rugby there then the 9Gem broadcast is doing it’s job.

Rugby Australia this morning announced the fixture for the three-test series between the Wallabies and France. It will include the first midweek test match since 2012.

Australia v France, Wednesday 7 July, 8.00pm AEST at Sydney Cricket Ground
Australia v France, Tuesday 13 July, 8.00pm AEST at AAMI Park, Melbourne
Australia v France, Saturday 17 July, 8.00pm AEST at Suncorp Stadium, Brisbane

All matches will be shown live on Nine Network and live and ad-free on Stan Sport. The second test will be held the night before State of Origin game three at Sydney’s Stadium Australia, also shown live on Nine.

The tests against France will be the first to have global investment platform eToro as the naming rights sponsor.

Great to see the Super Rugby AU grand final coverage hosted on the field at Suncorp Stadium, with Nick McArdle, Michael Cheika, Allana Ferguson and Drew Mitchell.

Nice cross promotion to Scott Cam, i see…

The graphics and logo on Rugby Union is so much better than the NRL graphics pack on Nine.

All that clutter on the screen is unnecessary.

According to on-screen graphics shown during Super Rugby AU grand final post-match, Nine’s coverage of Super Rugby Trans-Tasman actually begins next Friday night (May 14) with the Waratahs hosting the Hurricanes in Sydney. That match will be shown live on 9Gem in Sydney and Brisbane only, due to NRL on main channel. At this stage FTA coverage in Melbourne, Adelaide and Perth is unknown.
The May 15 clash between the Rebels and the Blues will air live on 9Gem across Australia.

What clutter?

Super rugby on main channel in Sydney beaten by the Swans and The Dog House. All three were close but a long way for rugby to become mainstream again.

Keeping in mind that Nine is usually Sydney’s #1 station and has been for several years now, I’d say it’s pretty bad that Super Rugby was 3rd in the ratings here last night.

The peak audience was the average multiplied by 7. So not too bad if the average includes the pre-game and post-game.

I’m sure 9 will be happy with the increase in the numbers for the grand final, a good starting point with Super Rugby in 9. Production was very good.

Considering it was the Reds vs Brumbies, and if you are a fan of Australia’s Worst Sports Franchise™, you might be a little over Super Rugby AU, given the winless streak may well continue into the next stage. The ratings result doesn’t surprise me.
