Just clarifying what channel the Cup & associated races is on
Channel 9 Chester Manifold Stakes, Race 9 on the card on Oaks Day!
With Nine airing their inaugural Melbourne Cup Carnival, what was their racing coverage like in the past when they did Sydney/Melbourne 3 decades or so ago?
Nine had a huge racing portfolio with the Caulfield Cup and Cox Plate on the network
During that period, most of the horse racing coverage aired as segments on the Wide World of Sports programs on Saturday or Sunday afternoons. Major meetings were often broadcast live directly from the racecourse, while high-profile international races were presented as special WWoS events, typically hosted by John Tapp. This setup allowed audiences to experience both local and international races with expert commentary and in-depth insights into the sport.
Nine’s spring racing carnival coverage concludes for 2024 today with the Champions Stakes Day. Thanks to the coverage of the previous three race days Nine was able to use footage for a new opener and various continuity through the day.
The coverage has been top class. The graphics were clean, clear and innovative and a nice refresh.
World class coverage. They need to wait to get NSW Racing rights which are tied up with 7 for the next couple of years
If Nine wants NSW Racing rights, it must be committed to show Saturday races all year round, it can’t just pick the spring and autumn festivals.
If the VRC maintains their stance on how they want the Melbourne Cup Carnival to be broadcast, NSW Racing won’t end up on Nine for the foreseeable future…
The closest Nine will get will be maybe most or all Queensland Racing TV Rights including the Magic Millions Carnival and maybe some Western Australia Racing events including the Perth Summer Carnival (E.G. Railway Stakes, Perth Cup etc).
Zero chance of New South Wales Racing returning to Nine given the huge clash with Most of the Melbourne Cup Carnival and it would be nice for it to be the 1990s all over again (Minus Ken Callander and Simon O’Donnell as well as Shane Dye) on Nine, but I can’t see that happening.
My predictions for Racing on FTA Australia TV over next couple years:
Seven - New South Wales and most Victoria and South Australia Race Meetings
Nine - Melbourne Cup Carnival, Magic Millions Carnival (And most other QLD Race meetings) and Perth Summer Carnival.
Do you think Nine’s debut official coverage feels like what we saw from 10 during most of the 1990s well into 2001.
Surely Nine could easily convert 9Gem into a secondary Nine main feed, which would satisfy both needs. That way, the VRC would be assured of main channel coverage for the Cup, and Racing NSW could ensure their race meetings are on the main channel in NSW.
9Gem is basically a secondary main, as most sports get thrown onto it during news bulletins and Olympics also used 9Gem as the feed. Not to mention Pacific Championship has been half on it.
The coverage was fresh and modern and reminded me of 10’s 1990-2001 era and 7’s 2002-18 efforts given Nine has never broadcasted the Melbourne Cup despite having a long association with the sport
Nine did the Magic Millions until 2014 which was their last coverage of a horse racing meet until this year’s Melbourne Cup Carnival
That would be the international coverage produced by the VRC.
Wasn’t there talk recently of the Sky Racing 1 channel maybe getting into the 9Now platform?
Stan was reportedly interested in acquiring streaming rights to the Sky Racing channels, but I don’t think there has been an outcome yet.
Jamie Kah’s has awkward ‘oh god’ moment during Channel 9’s Stakes Day broadcast
Australia’s best female jockey was being interviewed by Channel 9 host and racing identity Francesca Cumani on Stakes Day as part of Nine’s Flemington coverage for the Melbourne Cup Carnival.
Cumani was asking about Kah’s new fiance, jockey Ben Melham’s “pick up” ride on (now sadly retired) Stakes runner Pride of Jenni before the major group one race began and how excited he must be.
“He is very excited,” Kah said before the “oh god” as images of her and ex fiance Clayton Douglas in happier days flashed up on the national broadcast.
