Nope.
Clock is also broken in the first minute but that’s standard for the WNBL’s glorified live streams (same thing happens on ESPN).

Nine’s coverage of Penfolds Victoria Derby Day on Saturday delivered outstanding ratings, with viewership significantly up from last year. The broadcast attracted record audiences, with both the early and second sessions showing impressive growth in reach and engagement across the nation.
The early session of the broadcast achieved a National Total TV Reach of 1.039 million, an increase of 74% compared to last year. This session also secured a National Total TV Average Audience of 192,000, representing a remarkable 187% rise on last year’s broadcast.
The second session kept the momentum going, with a National Total TV Reach of 879,000 - up by an impressive 167% compared to the previous year. This session recorded a National Total TV Average Audience of 249,000, marking a 115% increase on last year’s figures.
Viewers tuned in to witness Goldrush Guru’s thrilling victory in the main race, with jockey Jamie Kah delivering a masterful ride to secure the win. The performance not only captivated racing fans but underscored the excitement of the Melbourne Cup Carnival, with Kah’s expert skills and Goldrush Guru’s powerful finish adding to the drama of the day.
Brent Williams, Director of Sport for the 9Network, expressed his enthusiasm over the broadcast’s success:
“These exceptional ratings reflect our ongoing commitment to delivering the best coverage of one of Australia’s most beloved sporting events. Penfolds Victoria Derby Day provided some unforgettable moments, especially with Jamie Kah’s incredible ride on Goldrush Guru. We’re thrilled that so many viewers joined us to experience all the excitement and drama as part of Nine’s comprehensive Melbourne Cup Carnival coverage.”Nine’s broadcast of Derby Day set the stage for what promises to be an unforgettable week of racing coverage, continuing with the Lexus Melbourne Cup from 10.00am tomorrow.
That’s a significant turnaround considering Derby Day was once again competing for viewers with Seven’s Golden Eagle telecast, and that the current administration of the Victoria Racing Club wanted the Melbourne Cup Carnival coverage to be showing more on the betting side.
If the trend continues, it will be very hard for Seven and 10 to pick up the rights again.
Nine has struck gold (pun intended) with the sporting events they have picked up in recent years, especially with the Olympics and the Australian Open, among others, in addition to continued strong coverage of rugby league which it has had the domestic rights to since 1992.
They’ll also have the upcoming Winter Olympics in 2026, a lot of which is expected to be broadcast in our prime time.
The Brisbane 2032 Olympics will also be massive for the network no doubt.
Aren’t Nine’s figures comparing apples to oranges though considering they split the Derby Day coverage into two sessions whereas 10 didn’t?
It’s the first time Nine has ever broadcasted the Melbourne Cup Carnival live in its near-70 year history after being on 7 and 10 so congratulations to them on their first broadcast last Saturday
10’s studio last year?
The official announcement on Nine gaining the rights to Sydney to Hobart was posted on the yacht race’s website last Monday.
The multi-year deal will include live telecast of the Boxing Day Race Start on the Nine Network’s free-to-air television channel as well as building a dedicated presence on 9Now’s live stream and video on demand service - as a repository for the Race’s archival materials, pre-race interviews, Live Update shows, live streams, in-race content and race highlights packages.
Sounds like Nine will also be taking over the role of filming footage during the race - in recent years the ABC has done this.
Seems that Nine’s Sydney to Hobart broadcast deal is more comprehensive than the previous agreements Seven and Ten had.
I wonder what Nine will receive in return. Exclusive access to both sides of Sydney Harbour for the start of the race including public viewing areas? Exclusive footage of the line honours yacht up the Derwent River? Exclusive access to Constitution Dock in Hobart (currently media outlets with accreditation can enter the area)?
Will any part of Tasmanian media benefit from the new deal?
the CYCA is excited at the prospect of partnering with Nine to share the many facets of the race and its competitors with audiences in new and innovative ways - across a broad stable of television, digital, press, magazine, radio and podcast assets.
That could mean Nine’s magazines (Good Weekend, Sunday Life, AFR magazine) will feature special articles on the yacht race in the future.
Could they take on The Caulfield Cup and The Cox Plate as lead up events to the Melbourne Cup carnival? Or are these events under a wider contract?
Caulfield Cup and Cox Plate are part of the wider contract with Racing Victoria.
Seven’s current deal with Racing Victoria expires in 2027.
After the 5 years on Network 10, it’s very evident that Nine obtaining the rights this year has given the Melbourne Cup Carnival a much needed boost in viewership and promotion.
A strong news services (9 News, Today, Today Extra, Weekend Today, ACA) are able to into twine with the Cup Coverage.
Network 10 just doesn’t have this platform, especially with the loss of a morning show. Another reason why premium sports want their products on Nine or Seven. I believe Matt White noted this a couple of years ago when he left Network 10.
Is Nine’s telecast going over the Flemington PA, including Brace’s host position for the more formal panel analysis and Cumani’s mounting yard analysis? Certainly sounds like it.

Loving the coverage, if you thought 10’s was refreshing, Nine have managed to take it to another level! Really impressed, hats off to ex Sneesby, Healy and Williams & Co. Just IMO. The stunning weather a bonus.
Have a sneaky feeling Nine could see some big numbers today, at least day reach and 3pm race, save for codings and bvod. Also important to note no OOH data, which would also be massive (pubs, etc).

edit
James Bracey killing it at the Melbourne Cup, not sure Eddie McGuire’s really needed in that wider ‘WWOS’ studio, Brace’s panel steering the proper proceedings nicely and his voice in the background as I look through the form guide is all I’ve really heard the past hour, his natural ability and talent on display too. It’s quite remarkable how he anchors so many different major sports seamlessly
One gets the impression that with all this stuff they have on over summer, they don’t really miss having the summer of cricket.
And this is why the AFL, NRL, Tennis and Cricket will never work with 10.
Literally the same sport/ event but works much better on a different channel.
Was at a business this morning and they had the TV on Seven for the Cup
This wouldn’t be helping - showing and discussing race odds.
