Why does the sizzle reel Bracey voices say “for the first time in our history, the Melbourne Cup comes to Nine”?

Is that statement incorrect?

Didn’t Nine have it previously?

In the early days all three stations (Nine, Seven, and ABC) for many years, usually on delay during the news. Then AFAIK all stations aired the race live for many years. Ten got exclusive rights around 1980.

Here is some info from @TelevisionAU, who I’m sure would have more information on it:

Also here is another article that lists 1978 has when 10 got the live rights:

Ah, I must have gotten confused with 10 having it in the 90s

AFL legend Leigh Matthews has quit Channel 9 with tonight’s edition of Footy Furnace being his final show for the network. Unsure what this means for his role on 3AW but considering his age and his role on the Lions’ board of directors, retirement from media may be very possible.

Surprised we haven’t heard more about Nine’s Melbourne Cup, one month out?

They’ll potentially tease it Sunday night.

Horse Racing was on Nine for decades but this will be the first ever live Melbourne Cup on the network meaning the race that stops a nation has been on all 3 commercial networks at least once in its 164-year history

Good promo. Interesting they’re not saying “exclusive”

Didn’t the race air on Sky Racing and/or Racing.com when 10 had the rights?

Yes it did.

Tabcorp secured the master rights to the Cup from the VRC, allowing them to grant access to these rights through sub-licensing deals. Nine won the FTA sub-licensing deal, making them a partner to both Tabcorp and the VRC.
