Nine Sports Broadcasting

Forgot to add golf (Australian Open, Australian PGA not sure if we still do an Australian Masters) as well as the US and UK iconic tournaments. Have recently been on Nine though. A shadow of their old selves however.

Nine currently only has the rights to The Masters.

I said previously that Nine would be looking for more sporting rights after it paid $305 million to show the Olympics from this year to Brisbane 2032, if it can afford to pay. But that’s changed after a weakening advertising market.

WNBL GETS READY TO GO

The Cygnett WNBL will be watchable by more sports fans than ever before after the League extended its partnership with ESPN, and expanded its broadcast arrangement with Channel 9 to include a new free-to-air deal, with marquee games to be available on 9Go, in High Definition (HD).

ESPN is widely regarded as the home of the basketball, and the WNBL is pleased to continue to deliver ‘WNBL Wednesday’s on ESPN’ and all Finals games. ESPN will also continue to provide strong coverage for fans through social and digital.

ESPN’s WNBL programming will also be available via Foxtel, Kayo Sports, and Sky Sports NZ.

The marquee 12:30pm Sunday afternoon game will be shown on 9Go and marks the first time the WNBL has been on a free-to-air main channel in five years. All remaining games will be available on Nine’s free digital channel, 9Now.

Last season the WNBL’s broadcast audience was the highest it has ever been, with a collective reach of over 2.6 million, up 23% from the previous season. With the additional visibility and exposure through 9Go for the upcoming season, it is expected this will increase again.

Head of WNBL, Christy Collier-Hill, is excited by the new deal.

“This is really exciting for the WNBL. It provides us with an enormous opportunity to really lift the profile of the league, the Clubs, and the incredible athletes that are part of it with two marquee games a week.

“The WNBL has some of the best basketball players in the world – Australian Opals and Gangurrus, WNBA and international superstars. We want as many people as possible to be able to see these amazing athletes in action on and off the court, and this new broadcast deal provides us with that opportunity.”

Senior Vice President and Managing Director, The Walt Disney Company Australia and New Zealand and Head of ESPN for Asia Pacific, Kylie Watson-Wheeler said:

“ESPN is excited as Australia’s ‘Home For Hoops’ to be continuing our long association with the WNBL and serving our audiences with women’s basketball in prime-time throughout the WNBL regular season and finals.”

Nine Director of 9Now and Programming, Hamish Turner, said: “We’re excited to bring the WNBL season to all Australians for free on 9Go! and to stream on 9now.

“Off the back of a thrilling bronze medal at the Olympic Games in Paris, Australia’s best basketballers will return to free to air joining Women’s rugby league where every NRLW game and the record breaking Women’s State of Origin series lives.”

Broadcast production partner, JAM TV, will continue to work behind the scenes to deliver the games to ESPN and Nine, with a number of key areas uplifted to improve the fan viewing experience.

“JAM TV is excited about renewing our production partnership with WNBL and bringing women’s basketball to Nine on Sundays to complement Wednesday prime-time coverage on ESPN. The WNBL and its stars have a great story to tell, and we’re looking forward to bringing those stories to life this season”.

The WNBL fixture and key dates are set for release this coming Monday, 2 September 2024, at 10am.

Bit of a FTA basketball triple header going on there (albeit over 3 channels) with the WNBL at 12:30pm on 9Go!, then a 2:30pm NBL game on Channel 10 and then the 4:30pm NBL game on 10Bold.

Also good that the NBL and WNBL aren’t stepping on each other, which has been a problem in the past under Basketball Australia’s operation of the WNBL (even if the WNBL isn’t being transfered to NBL led ownership until next season).

Nine should’ve got the NBL rights with them having a marquee sport to show outside the tennis. Games on Stan Sport with big matches on 9Gem

I wish 10 had got the rights to WNBL as well.

Maybe next season when Larry takes over the WNBL, I would think NBL and WNBL would be combined.

Pretty impressed to see the WNBL getting FTA coverage. Even if it is just one game a week.

9GO has had a fair bit of sports lately - the US (tennis) Open, to the NRL-Women’s, to some Olypmpics, and now the WNBL

While 9Gem has Rugby (inc Shute Shield), NRL, and the Olympics and Paralympics.

Good for Nine for still airing sport on FTA.

Surprised Nine picked this up again after spending big on the Olympics, would’ve thought it would have been ripe for maybe 10 to get to compliment their NBL fta coverage and interest in women’s sport.

On Nine hopefully. I can’t imagine Ten will around for too much longer.

Given the ABC had the FTA rights for a couple years (Around early 2020s - one Sunday match a week), I guess it isn’t too expensive - the fact that they don’t have to do the broadcast themselves (just take the feed from the WNBL) probably appeals to broadcasters (i.e. don’t have to pay additional costs for OB trucks, commentators, etc).

TV deals and everyday operations, probably. Clubland probably not, maybe some alignment in cities with teams in both and some expansion in cities with only one of the 2 (although the NBL isn’t expanding to Bendigo).

Only Sydney Flames and Kings are currently under the same ownership.

The 2024/25 WNBL fixture was announced yesterday morning. The first FTA game of the season is Sydney Flames v UC Capitals on Sunday, November 3. 9Now and 9GO! will only show two semi finals and game 2 of grand final series live.

According to The Sunday Telegraph’s Phil Rothfield, Billy Slater will be on horseback interviewing the winning jockey after the major races during Nine’s coverage of the upcoming Melbourne Cup Carnival. Slater and his wife Nicole love horse racing and breed horses at Slater Thoroughbreds.

The 2024 NRL Finals begin with three-time reigning premiers, the Panthers out to send a warning shot to their rivals when Nathan Cleary returns from injury in what is the last ever game at Penrith Park, where he aims to repeat his finals heroics of 2023. The Roosters however have other ideas, lead by James Tedesco coupled with an aggressive forward pack featuring former Panthers wrecking ball, Spencer Leniu, Angus Crichton and Jared Waerea-Hargreaves, don’t expect the Roosters to take a backwards step in what shapes as a bruising encounter.

3.15pm AEST on Channel 9 in Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane. Stream for free on 9Now.

The Minor Premiership winning Melbourne Storm stroll into their home final against the Sharks with the tag of premiership favouritism sitting comfortably on their shoulders. The opponenets, the Sharks, have been written off and criticised for their lack of performance in the finals and would love nothing more than to claim a big scalp, with former Storm premiership player Nicho Hynes in the drivers seat. There’s never a shortage of animosity between these two clubs, and with a spot on the Preliminary finals on the line expect things to get a little spicy.

Elimination Final # 1 - Cowboys v Knights @ Queensland Country Bank Stadium, Townsville

It’s win or go home when Dally M Medallist Kalyn Ponga and his Knights ride into Townsville to take on the Cowboys for the first elimination final. The Knights have been playing for their season for the last few weeks and will be battled hardened, while the Cowboys have a team full of State of Origin and International representatives playing in front of 25,000 die heard North Queenslanders. Sunday 15th September

All eyes are once again locked on Nicho Hynes, as the Sharks star fights to prove he can be a big game player, while the Cowboys push for a second preliminary final appearance in just three seasons.

Saturday 21st September, Coverage from 7.00pm AEST
Semi Final # 2 - Roosters v Sea Eagles @ Allianz Stadium, Sydney
Channel 9 in Syd/Melb/Bris/Adel/Perth. Stream for free on 9Now.

With 23 premierships between them it’s a battle of the big birds when the Sydney Roosters meet the Manly Sea Eagles. After being outclassed by the Panthers last week, the Roosters revert back to their chook pen at Allianz Stadium where they’ll welcome back enforcer Victor Radley, as captain James Tedesco rallies his team to keep their season alive in his 250th NRL game.

Manly will come with winning momentum and two of the NRL’s biggest names - Daly Cherry-Evans and Tom Trbojevic, who have a few tricks up their sleeve in a bruising encounter. A spot in next week’s Preliminary Final against the Melbourne Storm.

NRLW ROUND 9

The fight for the sole remaining spot in the NRLW finals makes for an intriguing last round of the regular season. With the Roosters, Broncos and Sharks locked in for the semi finals, the NRLW premiers of the Knights hopes of making it three premiership wins in a row will rest on beating to Cowboys in a very hot Townsville on Saturday. The Cowboys have the incentive of denying their former coach of last year, Ben Jeffries, in his first year at the helm of the Knights, the chance of continuing the Knights reign.

If the Knights are unsuccessful in Townsville on Saturday, the Eels will knock them out of the finals if they can upset the ladder leading Roosters on Sunday afternoon.
