There’s a comment by the Channel Nine account further down which states they preserved the original.
Mabe they went banana yellow because it’s a tropical area
They should have added a pair of horns to it… Cowboys country.
It’s pretty obvious when you look at the Go and Gem logos that they’ve added a fairly subtle white border to all the logos to make them stand out or something, but the yellow and white on the Nine logo mixes together with the white and hence your eyes see a very old, pre-06 Nine logo.
I think SCA has just left it up to the local signage companies to design them. They probably didn’t provide them with good enough templates to work from. Our local GWN7 sales office did just that and their signage looks like this (sorry, no photo yet):
Nah the one used for the Southern Cross office definitely has the current Nine logo on the building. If you look close enough, you can see the inside of the numeral 9, that it’s edges are straight - compared to the pre '06 one which has rounded edges
Thanks for the clarification
Heard a radio ad on SCA’s Hot FM station this afternoon advertising tonight’s NRL as “Only on 9HD, channel 50 on your remote”.
The use of the word “only” seemed a bit odd.
Yes, that’s wrong and ill informed.
As we all know, FOX have simulcast rights to everything bar Origin and the Grand Final.
It was good to see the classic nine openers on SC Nine. No way WIN would ever show these.
Not to mention also being available on remote control channel 5.
Sorry for going back in time - it doesnt necessarily need to be a ‘backdoor deal’, there may be an option in Nine’s agreement that allows them to either undertake the acquisition or to open negotiations.
GIven there are a lot of unknowns with the media ownership changes, both sides will be looking to keep their options open
To me it looks like they have set it up for take over so when the time comes everything presentation wise will have already have been completed. Lets face it the Key markets(NSW, Vic and Qld) as Nine have called them are basically now known as Nine regional!
I dont know how much I’d read into to the branding - it makes a lot of sense for Nine to licence SCA to use the Nine brands for both sides - it retains consistency, but also saves SCA money
Mainly my own opinion, but with a little bit of insider knowledge, it doesn’t make sense to use the same branding - unless the takeover/merger plan has a very good chance of coming off. And currently Nine are laughing all the way to the bank. SCA would have agreed to just about anything to get the Nine affiliateship. So, out of that, and because SCA have all this time (when with Ten) been lazy in just taking the network’s image, promos, after break graphics etc, it was the easy choice to go entirely with Nine’s image.
And now they’re branding their bricks and mortar stations with Nine-only logos, ready for Nine to take over - and SCA are paying for it!
Nine is already learning some of the disadvantages in having a same-branded affiliate. The complaints often go the wrong way. Difficulties like complaints about presentation problems (as many have noted here), to far flung translators being off air, to local advertising errors, are being directed directly at Nine’s metro stations. This was a minor problem with Win, but not to the same extent as the now faceless SCA.
Another problem is the competition for the national advertiser’s dollar. Despite affiliation agreements, the Metropolitan and Regional networks are in competition for a greater slice of the national advertiser’s pie. With the Nine/SCA joint national sales agreement, SCA will never get national advertising distribution skewed in their favour with any national advertising sold. But if their sales team go it alone with a particular national brand advertiser, their lack of independent branding in any form leads to confusion in the advertiser’s mind. “Who the hell am I spending my money with?” Not Nine, but Nine?
Similarly, it was not unknown for the Nine network to tell advertisers they were getting ‘National coverage’, when in fact the item in question wasn’t broadcast on Win stations.
Come the takeover or merger, none of this matters, as the money all ends up in the same place.
Many talk of ‘consistency’ between National and Regional. Consistency means squat in business if it doesn’t affect profits. SCA are looking for an easy ride on the coat tails of Nine. Nine are looking to the day they can have a real national network - for the purposes of keeping all the money that’s available to be had, not because it feels good to have a national network of affiliates.
And Nine are preparing for this end. But should it become clear that the audience reach rules will NOT be changed, I’m certain Nine will change their mind and insist that SCA brand their stations with a point of difference.
Just because they’re using the 9 logo doesn’t imply a takeover is imminent. As you’ve said they have form in just copying metro branding under Ten so this is just more of the same. They obviously see benefits in just branding as Nine rather than bastardise Nine’s presentation to insert their own name. As viewers are concerned they probably just call it Channel 9 anyway so why bother forcing another name.
Would they have been broadcast in regional areas when they first aired?
I’m pretty sure that regional viewers wouldn’t have seen the old Nine Idents back in the day, unless they were lucky to have reception of regional TV of course. Although it must be said that it would’ve been very awkward to see old Nine-style WIN Television Idents airing on SCA Nine!
The old clips of ACA that were shown for last night’s intro were mainly from the 1990s and 2000s, by which time ACA would’ve been quite widely seen in regional Australia…
