Nine (Southern Cross)

Wonder if they are going to mention to viewers that 9 Life will go off air in 3 weeks . I can imagine the complaints on social media . Some people might think something is wrong with their tv as the channel has only really just started here in MPEG -4. Heck I already read complaints about people not getting the channel because it is in MPEG-4 .

I had to explain to my parents what was happening . They watch those shows every night . They will probably go back to watching 7 Two.

Unless the techs are working so hard that 9 Life will keep on going from July 1 ? ā€¦ though I doubt it.

So for viewers in regional Qld I wonder once everything is finished in September/October will 9 Life go back to being in MPEG-2 ?

Southern Cross need to pull their finger out and contradict WINā€™s promos asap.
Something likeā€¦
All your favourite WIN and Channel Nine programs (cue program reel) can only be seen on Channel 5 from July 1 (followed by footage of a a person pressing no. 5 on their remote control and the Nine logo appearing).
They are completely mad to sit around and let WIN fool existing viewers into thinking WIN have secured Nine and Ten content post July 1.
I would also be requesting Channel Nine to mention the swap during 6pm Nine News and throughout NRL games, in particular SOO game 2.

Iā€™d say thatā€™s highly unlikely.
Otherwise Southern Cross would be airing it at launch on July 1 with the other MPEG-2 channels.

But ultimately, no one knows and its up to SCA to decide.

Do you people all think the general public are mentally stuffed??? Itā€™s freaking television. Read the guide, click the channel with the show you like. End of story. Itā€™s so black and white. No one cares about the name of the channel or who owns it. One click on the remote is not going to send the population into meltdownā€¦

Yes, you would be surprised how many viewers are confused by the swap. You only have to read comments on WINā€™s Facebook pages and comments in local news paper articles to get an idea.
New branding, and existing channels and branding disappearing overnight is sure to confuse viewers without an explanation.

How come we are losing 9 Life anyway ? Itā€™s a Nine channel that Win is broadcasting here. It isnā€™t in HD . Why canā€™t it keep airing after July 1 ? Not enough space for it ?

Youā€™ve just answered your own question?

Haha I did too. Typing when tired .

Iā€™m pretty sure that Nine would love SCA to broadcast all network channels from July 1, but obviously SCA need to upgrade quite a few things on the technical side (playout, getting transmitters capable of broadcasting MPEG4, etc.) before they can broadcast Nine HD and 9Life.

Iā€™m sure the wait for both channels to return wonā€™t be that long, will be worth it and once the switch happens, it will be quickly forgotten about just like the wait for One HD via SC10 or 7TWO via Prime/SCTV in 2009.

Logically thereā€™d be no reason to, at worst including a promo loop or national ads until they are fully prepared for playout of a fourth channel.

Iā€™m sure they could even just get MediaHub to do it - theyā€™ll have some excess capacity coming upā€¦

The loss of ad revenue should they need to make one national feed (and use Aspireā€™s encoders), is nothing compared to the loss of continuity for viewers of shows.

TV_Addict, because Southern Cross have not invested in the additional equipment required to make the broadcast of that additional channel possible. In fact, the only reason you have access to it now is through WINā€™s own investment in this equipment which will at this stage become surplus to requirements from July 1.

Shame they didnā€™t opt for LCN9. Confusing watching Channel 9 on Channel 5.

considering it took win ages to get 9life doubt we have to wait as long as that hopefully Southern cross is getting onto it ?

Perhaps itā€™s as simple as SC not being set up to feed the transmitters in overlap regions with a different LCN.

They all seem paranoid about making people rescan though. You wouldnā€™t necessarily need to if they started using different LCNs - they could keep the same PIDs and people on the old numbers would still tune in fine, but from a promotions perspective itā€™s easier for them to be on 5 for everyone.

Itā€™s really not though for the general public.
Iā€™ve been following discussions on Facebook and people honestly have no clue and donā€™t understand.
It seems simple, but itā€™s really not for a lot of people.

Iā€™ve tried explaining the change to people myself too, and even just saying that all shows on Channel 8 and 5 will swap over, people still donā€™t seem to understand.

Itā€™s honestly gonna end up being a big mess of confusion for people without some adequate promotion (not this current ā€œweā€™re adding new showsā€ attitude).

I think it is more to do with original LCN allocation. The company Southern Cross were allotted LCN 5xx when the system was set up. It just happened that at the time that was because they were a Ten affiliate. But now that the company has that allocation, they are stuck with it. There is no provision to change to 9 and Southern Cross canā€™t arbitrarily elect to move to 9xx anymore than 7 can start up a service tomorrow on LCN 4.

If there was any place that had a chance to change it would areas like Tasmania or where there is a WIN monopoly on all services so that all could move to 7xx, 9xx and 1xx.

I think that what you say demonstrates how hard it is for the broadcasters. If as you say in a one on one discussion you canā€™t explain the change to someone, I think it is going to be very hard for broadcasters to do any better. The main reason I think is that Australians have never had to think about affiliations before so before you explain that they are changing you have to start by explaining what affiliation means.

WIN are in the better position as they have an on-air brand (that they are passionate about) so there is some chance of recognition. However, Southern Cross rarely use their name on air and appear to be totally abandoning it going forward, so it is hard to explain that SC with change from 10 to 9 when there isnā€™t going to be a SC in the future.

They could easily have promos that state ā€œSouthern Cross Ten is soon going to become Nineā€¦ with all your Nine Network programs, on Channel 5ā€ unless there is some restriction on them using or promoting the Nine branding ahead of 1 July.

But from what I read above, that is hard to understand. What is ā€œSouthern Cross Tenā€ I hear the viewer ask :grinning:

I think it might have to even simpler ā€œ5 on your remote - the new home for channel 9 programs from July 1stā€¦ 50 for GEM and 55 for GOā€

Throw in lots of different remotes in use and some SFX.

I heard this took 6 months though not sure if what I heard was accurate.

I wonder why WIN would go to all this effort to get 9 Life and WIN hd up and running so fast in 3months when they end up going with SC rather than Nine .
