Nine (Southern Cross)

Precisely why they should use the Masterchef slot to flip over to Nine branding - something they can’t do while showing a Ten show.

If SC had some other content they could use that wouldn’t fall under Nine or Ten’s programming agreement, then use that instead - just think they need a way of launching the channel in prime time as Nine and having the most eyeballs possible to let people know that they are now Nine.

Why not run MasterChef + Shark Tank or Masterclass (which ever is on), both of which will get more viewers than anything else they could come up with and fill every break with info about the change. I would hope they would do this on every day of the changeover week - they have to promote their new programs for the following week; they can’t promote what is on MasterChef in July.

There is some discussion about the SCA/WIN switchover in a local community facebook group that I am a part of.

Much to my surprise, there seems to be more people pissed off about losing 9Life than there are about NRL not being in HD anymore.

I don’t think we should all assume SC10 will do ‘well’ straight off, because it will carry higher-rating programming & the #1 rating News in Melbourne ans Sydney.

SC10 (in viewers eyes) has always been ‘3rd banana’ & WIN has always had the local bews bulletins, local promos, etc.

It’s more likely Ch 10 will benefit (initially at least) by having WIN… Australia’s largest regional.

We’ll see…

I know you have more of a pronounced preference for Ten (and to a lesser extent, Seven) over Nine but it’s worth remembering that WIN has usually rated well over the years mainly because of Nine’s programing, not despite it!

In this day and age, people mainly watch programs and aren’t so loyal to TV networks anymore. After a few months (say by September or October) once the initial confusion wears off, a Ten-affiliated WIN will probably rate slightly better than the current SCA-owned Network Ten outlet however I still think that SCA Nine will be in a better ratings position. However the big winners of the change will undoubtedly be the currently top rating Prime7/Seven Queensland for reasons that really don’t need explaining.

As far as local news is concerned, I think Seven will probably dominate in Queensland. But in Southern NSW, the ACT and regional Victoria, how successful WIN News will be after July 1 will probably depend on two things.

*1: How long it takes for SCA to establish new local news services for the soon to be Nine-affiliated stations.
*2: Whether or not Prime7 respond by introducing local news services to regions (Illawarra/South Coast, Canberra, most of regional Victoria) that currently only get those short news updates, in addition to their existing services in the NSW Central West, Riverina and NSW/VIC Border regions.

I thought I would respond to a comment made by SCTV in the the Southern Cross topic where I posted a video of examples from tonight to demonstrate SC10’s sponsor line ups.

I’m not convinced that SC9’s presentation it is going to pick up much. They will obviously have access to Nine’s promos (as they do with Ten’s) but for anything that they do themselves, I am not too optimistic.

I just find the competence of the organisation in running a TV network below par. Three weeks to go and nothing from the network to promote a new line-up to viewers. For example, SC10 are currently running a huge campaign for Offspring with long 1-2 minute first look promos through primetime. But as discussed in the Offspring topic, looking at the forward schedules they will be lucky to broadcast even one episode. I could understand an occasional 30 sec promo, but they are currently running as if nothing is changing with the network in 3 weeks time.

Hopefully for their viewers, I’m shown to be wrong, come July.

Outside Southern Cross Television (Tasmania in particular), they do bare minimum in their television stations. They just skim the profit from the remaining stations. They have said themselves radio is their priority. The 50 per cent revenue deal re-affirms the sentiment. Expect the same post-July.

I agree - the people that run SCA don’t seem to have much of a clue in any area.

The terrible 2 minute news updates, the graphics, no social media activity, promoting Offspring, not promoting Nine programming…they really just seem to have no idea how to run a tv business

They have zero idea about Social media - the Southern Cross Ten Facebook pages 2,500 likes - and that is broadcasting to 5 million people.

SC News SA has 10,000 likes - and they broadcast to 150,000 people

If you post zero content, and don’t know how to ruin social media - you don’t build followers

SCA’s noodle updates are like they’re trying to be awful. The ones on Prime doesn’t seem anywhere near as bad in terms of visual presentation style.

As for not promoting Nine programming. Yes, they should be promoting it, but I think they might also a little stuck because they don’t a brand of their own promote.

WIN can say, “From July 1 you can enjoy Masterchef, F1, etc on WIN” and pretend WIN viewers will be gaining more programs.

SC, without an on-air brand which they’ve promoted over the years and which will be branding itself as Nine, have to say: “From July 1, the Block, Footy Show, NRL, etc will be on this channel, channel 5. Stay tuned, our lineup is definitely getting better”.

No, I think that would be clumsy marketing. They don’t need to say “these shows will be here on Channel 5”

When cable networks in the US rebrand (Oh! became Oxygen, ABC Family became Freeform, G4 became Esquire, FXM Movies became FXX) they generally do it like this

“ON JANUARY 1ST - ABC FAMILY IS CHANGING - TO FREEFORM. A WHOLE NEW LOOK, A WHOLE NEW LOOK, A WHOLE NEW LINEUP, AND A WHOLE NEW ATTITUDE. FREEFORM - IT’S TV FOR A NEW GENERATION. ABC FAMILY BECOMES FREEFORM - FROM JAN 1”

SC should be doing 2 things: running promos for Nine shows coming July 1 and after, such as Love Child, just running the promos from Nine - no additional messaging needed. Just get these promos in Masterchef, The Project, HYBPA and other high rated shows

And secondly running a promo that explains what is happening, something along the lines of

ON JULY 1, SOUTHERN CROSS TEN IS CHANGING - TO CHANNEL NINE! A BRAND NEW HOME FOR ALL YOUR FAVORITE NINE NETWORK PROGRAMS. TODAY. THE VOICE. A CURRENT AFFAIR. LOVE CHILD. HERE COME THE HABIBS. THE NRL. THE STATE OF ORIGIN. AND COMING SOON - NINE LOCAL NEWS!

SOUTHERN CROSS TEN - BECOMES CHANNEL NINE. WITH BIGGER BETTER SHOWS. THE CHANGE HAPPENS JULY 1

Something along the lines of that.

I was just having a look through at some of the ratings info on RegionalTAM.

Southern Cross is definitely going to benefit from a massive ratings boost compared to what they have now.
Currently QLD and SNSW are the two markets where SCA trails behind WIN by around 10% market share, while in VIC, SCA is only about 5% behind WIN.

It’s gonna be interesting to see how WIN maintaining their local news and LCN has an affect on these figures, although I think that affect will only be short term.

Once viewers have worked out that Nine shows are now on SCA, it’ll probably only take a few weeks before WIN and SCA have completed swap places on market share to what they have now.

The only place that could be different I think is SNSW, where WIN is the “legacy” station.

SCA are probably hoping that SOO 3 ends up being a decider. It’ll be a big benefit for them having one of the highest rating events of the year on their network within 3 weeks of taking over affiliation.

SCA have posted this graphic up on their website

What are PRIME7 ratings like in Regional Victoria compared to WIN & SC Ten?

Probably would have done a better job too

PRIME7 is way ahead of both WIN and SC10 in Regional VIC.
In fact, SC10 performs low enough that the ABC is ahead of it.
