Nine (Southern Cross)

Not being from that area that could be the case but I thought there was a significant amount of effort for the first few years to have a consistent corporate look across all the network. I do remember quite a big fuss about all the new logos and the look - most likely included words like “synergy” and stuff.

Ahhh, 2005. Thanks for that, knew it was sometime mid 2000’s!

Yes, the old logo had been the plain Ten and Southern Cross, I think prior to that had been the Ten Capital and Ten Queensland etc… variants

There definitely was. SC10 were never ones to strictly stick to using their own unique branding (most of the station promos and lineups were Ten-branded ones), but they did air more of their own SC10-produced idents/promos during the mid-late 2000s. I remember this station ID in particular used to actually air just as often (if not more) than the Ten-branded version:

Is is possible that Southern Cross may decide to continue a state wide bulletin for Victoria, New South Wales and Queensland?

The 6pm time slot has been kept warm by WIN News and they still need to fill their requirements for local content in the region.

I think the chances would be very low. That’s a massive commitment and SCA have said for a while that they’re not interested in the TV business anymore. They wouldn’t even have the resources available (since it sounds like they are mostly based in Tassie now).

Even if they were to work with 10 on a bulletin - 10 barely has enough resources!

Noodle updates, perhaps within the 10 News bulletin, seem the most likely outcome.

Of course SCA could just walkaway all together if they don’t see a profit in it. Be interesting to see what would happen then.

I didn’t say work with 10. Southern Cross could produce 3 bullets (for NSW/Vic/Qld) out of Canberra or Tasmania if required. Yes staff would needed to be hired, but it could be done.

And as I said, the 6pm time slot has been kept warm by WIN news.

i think we’ll get the full ten news first

A year or two ago I would have said CBS would buy it, but even that’s looking doubtful.

Money also required, money they will have a lot less of with Ten programming which was the issue that WIN had. Did we also establish that SCA wasn’t also paying the full amount of affiliation fees they predicted because the revenue was lower than they expected even with Nine programming?

Yeah I understood what you meant. I’m saying, SCA don’t have the resources to produce these bulletins. They don’t have their Canberra setup anymore. Only Tassie - and that only has two sets.
Unless you were to prerecord these statewide bulletins?

Well they will need to hire staff to produce something. It’s in their local license agreement for each region. At the moment from what I’m aware of, they have facilities based in Canberra, Tasmania and yes Bendigo.

The most likely scenario is that they’ll cheap out and get Alex Sykes to present noodle updates alongside her Nine Tasmania + Seven Darwin commitments.

Well they have 4 months to get their shit together and sort something out. I just think it’s a missed opportunity for Southern Cross to only revert back to the noodle updates for each region when they have a local 6pm news window currently open.

Which will again become Ten Tasmania after July 1?

Anyway…Alexandra Sykes. Unless I’m thinking of someone else (which is quite possible), wasn’t she a presenter of SC10 Updates in a market or two last decade?

Totally agree with you though

Ten Tasmania or maybe even TDT 10 again - Nine will be WIN again in Tas but yes, that’s the sort of thing I can see happening, maybe another presenter coming on board to share the load but that’s what I’m expecting for news output.

Southern Cross Media dropped 20% after the announcement this morning but climbed back up and at the close were down 10%. Nine Entertainment ended down slightly.

Can’t wait to see Southern Cross return these to our screens in July…
