Nine Olympic Coverage

A bit weird for Seven to include their sports tagline on this image.

Good points. Of course us in this forum do know who presenting, and who is returning home. The average Joe Blow wouldn’t know.

Let’s be honest, she should’ve been paired with Bracey from the get go on primetime. She’s too experienced and valuable to be wasted poolside, maybe sending Leila to the events instead might’ve got something out of her.

Not really, it’s their 7sport post so they can have it so if someone uses their post or pic it has their watermark.

ABC Sports have their logo on their posts about the Olympics

10 sports also uses their logo for their posts

Agreed

But also, true:

It crossed my mind this could happen, but would be quite different from the OC. Not like the hosts could ‘cross’ to the commentators, in a booth? That’d give it away instantly! Maybe a couple of reporters on-location.

Wonder who else from the team is flying back before Monday? Imagine some reporters, surely. And no doubt some of the many crew.

Absolutely

They didn’t even show the commentators when crossing to them, they just announced they were taking over and the pictures then cut to the OBS feed. Even if it was in Paris, it will probably be the same.

I think there were some social media material though which they wouldn’t be able to do again, there was one image of Todd, Ally and Karl in the rain under disposable rain jackets and the like, with their equipment and position

R&R for them before they get back to work. ACA returns on Monday and 60 minutes has an Olympic special on Tuesday

Not Nine showing 3 hour old diving tapes on the main channel!

In Nine’s package about Cathy Freeman, it sounds like they re-recored the opening ceremony announcements (the original English V/O was John Staton, who is now the V/O for Seven News).

Nine have re-edited and re-recorded everything within an inch of its life, wiping previous calls like they never existed. Bad co-operation and licencing from IOC, Seven and Nine all round TBH.

Nothing new. When Nine gained the broadcasting rights to the Australian Open tennis in mid-2018 for the 2019 tournament onwards (remember, this was supposed to begin in 2020, but was brought forward twelve months when Seven got the cricket), they also gained access to the AO archives, but used the world feed commentary for such matches.

This meant that when, in 2020, they featured that epic Djokovic vs Nadal final from 2012 on The Greatest (which some of you may remember aired during the first half of 2020), they used the world feed commentary led by Peter Donegan, and there was also an Agassi vs Rafter match from 2001 that was called by Anthony Hudson (or at least that’s who I thought I could hear in this video):

Hudson was employed by Channel Seven at the time, though was calling the match on the world feed.

Yes but I think Nine just choose not to, petty. Rather than in the case of the Olympics, which at least in part, appears to be out of necessity, due to previous copyright/rights related with Seven and the IOC.

Seven used to produce the world feed, on top of producing their own feed, until about the mid-2010s

The thing is though, John Staton was the announcer heard in the stadium - his voice would’ve been heard on every world broadcaster. It wouldn’t have anything to do with licencing from the IOC - they would’ve supplied the clean feed with his announcements - Nine have chosen to edit them out.

IIRC, even when Seven introduced a secondary channel for its Australian Open coverage in 2015, they still used the world feed for some matches, while in most instances there were two matches running simultaneously that had their own commentators (e.g. McAvaney/Courier on Seven, Newcombe/Woodbridge on 7two/7mate).

Same goes with Nine/9Gem since 2019.

I wonder who will narrate the closing ceremony. Leila will surely be involved. Maybe with Eddie McGuire or James Bracey? Brooke Boney could also be involved.

The difference is they aren’t using the world feed with the Olympics, they have re-recorded their own version.

I think the originals have excitement & surprise since that commentary is happening in real time without the result known but the 9’s re-recorded versions feel like it’s missing that aspect

Ellie Cole and Tony Jones have been no Nathan Templeton or Jason Richardson have they… In fact, I couldn’t tell you a single moment from the pool deck or track side this Games, let alone actually see Nine prominently crossing. Tokyo for example had many, highlighted by Kaylee McKeown’s viral F-bomb. Definitely something for WWOS to work on for LA 2028 IMO.

Cole is a bit fish out of water and too soft, even though she’s lovely. And TJ is just awkward, creepy old man vibes. Chompety chomp chompers :grimacing:

Just had a cross to Brooke Boney for the breakdancing. Her laughs irks me for some odd reason.

That was one of the worst crosses of the Games, added absolutely nothing. At least she’s going out with a bang! “This’ll be the first… And last break dancing at an Olympics”.
