Nine Olympic Coverage

Leila McKinnon was not in the Trocadero studio so Roz Kelly took over the afternoon duties, hosting with Dylan Alcott.

This is all rather odd, can’t recall Seven’s talent all dashing back to Australia, usually it was all hands on deck ‘until it’s over’, with the Closing Ceremony?

Stefanovic, Abo, Woodbridge, McKinnon all going to be MIA… After on-air everything has been so familiar day after day. Glad to see Roz deservedly getting some Olympics hosting though.

Wonder if it’s part of Nine’s financials, trying to save a bit on the last few days as things start to wind-down? Or logistics? Or fair enough if things were booked, such as work studio commitments (Todd with TP filming), family or friend engagements, etc. Could be health related, rest days, with non-stop hours after more than 2 weeks, months for some.

To be fair, Seven didn’t really use anyone from the newsroom apart from Gary Wilkinson, Kylie Gillies, and Matt White, when they went on location.

AFL commentators would’ve been able to fly back in time for the next round following the games.

Guess they want the Today crew to be back on deck on Monday to try and continue the momentum from the Olympics (which they won’t since they’ve been airing a different show during the games). Possibly more flights available before the games end.

Don’t know why Lelia is flying back though? Unless Alison is staying till the end, and she will be filling in for ACA (is she even still the main fill in)

Wasted opportunity not to have Roz Kelly and James Bracey together tonight, can’t believe they put Leila McKinnon in prime time, this’ll be a trainwreck and that’s saying something considering Allison Langdon. Maybe because a lot on east coast will be watching NRL, who knows.

Is NRL on main channel in VIC tonight?

No.

Ally Langdon still listed in tonight’s EPG, I’m guessing this wasn’t planned? Abbey Gelmi Tokyo 2.0!

Honestly, James could’ve done this solo, hands down. Would anyone have really noticed or cared. Leila still sounds bored out of her brain and totally out of her depth.

Karl and Sarah also in the EPG all weekend too.

Yeah I just don’t buy you’d suddenly pull on-air stars with 3 days to go. Not suggesting anything sinister, but some poor forward planning or some executives have had changes of heart, for whatever and possibly a variety of reasons.

But everybody will notice Leila there and therefore Ally not there, as well as McKinnon’s lack there of and nervousness blubbering of sports presenting, they may have managed to avoid in the afternoon. So Nine have shot themselves in the foot here at the Olympics’ climax IMO.

Brace’s mic was off just then crossing to Culbert and Hooker, you could still hear him softly from Leila or another distant studio mic

I don’t understand why Nine choose presenters who couldn’t fulfil their hosting duties for the entire Olympics period. Having whole new presenting line-ups for the last few days of competition isn’t a great look.

Does it really matter? Viewers aren’t watching for the presenters.

May be an issue having presenters work two-weeks straight?

Karl and Sarah mentioned this morning at the end of Today in Paris that they were flying home in a few hours. They’d be well and truly on a plane by now.

Edit: really unhelpful when members delete posts that have already been replied to. Messes up the flow and hard to follow the conversation.

It’s possible that the Closing Ceremony could be called from Australia.

In any event it seems that having exceeded expectations with the ratings for the games coverage, Nine are now getting ready to try to capitalise on the success by having their key stars ready to do battle immediately after the games finish.

Considering it starts at 5am that isn’t a bad idea. Karl and Sarah would be in the studio anyway for Today…

Yes because it (wrongly) gives off the impression that the last few days of the Olympics aren’t as important as the two weeks which preceded it such that presenters can fly back to Australia.

You’re not going to see NBC decide that the likes of Mike Tirico or Rebecca Lowe (even though the Premier League starts again next weekend) can take the rest of the Olympics off just because we’re in the home stretch.

I think you’re thinking too much into it. The average viewer wouldn’t even know who presented what.

Go ask someone in Woolies tomorrow who hosted the Olympics tonight and I guarantee they wouldn’t know.
