Tim Arvier, tonight was awarded the Queensland Journalist of the year, for his coverage of Black Lives Matter protests in Minneapolis on Nine News and the Today Show.

He also received the awards for TV News Report of the year and Broadcast Interview of the year.

Judges comments.

The judges complimented Tim on his courageous cross from the heart of the riots in Minneapolis ā€“ a compelling 17 minutes of live television that brought to the lounge rooms of Australia the chaos that was unfolding on the streets of America ā€“ as it happened, in real time.

Tim and his camera operator Adam Bovino worked seamlessly as a team as bricks were thrown and tear gas fired all around them. Tim kept a cool head and his professional composure, delivering colourful but precise commentary to the pictures being captured; at one point even remembering to apologise for the language when protestors yelled out the F word! But the cross itself was just 17 minutes of the days Tim spent on the front line of the riots, negotiating roadblocks, risking arrest ā€“ and worse ā€“ to produce top-quality television journalism that would captivate audiences anywhere in the world. At one point he was even detained at gun point by police.

If great journalism involves having courage and engaging your audience through compelling storytelling, Tim Arvier has proven a worthy recipient of the 2020 Queensland Journalist of the Year.

Broadcast Interview:

This is a standout example of live reporting, with Tim Arvier taking his viewers into the chaos of the Minneapolis Black Lives Matter protests. Standing in the middle of the mayhem, with police at one end reluctant to intervene and protesters at the other hovering over an injured man, Tim navigated the tension and danger of the situation to report fairly and accurately on the stand off. It is a textbook perfect example of live news reporting incorporating on the spot interviews which informed viewers and offered buy-in to a critical moment in US history.

TV/Audio Visual News Report:

An obvious winner on every level of news reporting. Calm under pressure, no embellishment of the circumstances surrounding them, just raw reporting from a danger zone. Accurate and incisive, a movie producer would struggle to recreate the moving sequence of action Tim and Adam documented in vision and live voice over back to Australia. A perfect blend of gutsy camerawork and live commentary. A model of modern live news reporting that will be taught in journalism courses for years to come. The crew faced extreme danger together in this coverage. Television is a visual mediumā€¦ cameraman Adam Bovino deserves equivalent praise for this award alongside his journalist Tim Arvier. Live tv at its best.

In light of his move to 2GB to present weather segments during their breakfast & drive shows, Tim Bailey has changed his Twitter handle to @dailybaileyNINE.

Now you donā€™t need to remind me about the ownership of 2GB, but still the big question comes to mind: Are we eventually going to see Tim make a TV return somewhere on Nine?

Personally I hope we wonā€™t see him on Sydney 4pm/6pm bulletins! Sure, Nine News Sydney is in desperate need of a credibility boost for its weather coverage with meteorologists as lead presenters on the other three networks, but Tim Bailey definitely isnā€™t the answer. IMO, probably the one TV forecaster in Sydney who is (or was until recently) worse than Amber Sherlock and Belinda Russell!

Agree, I think Tim would well work well on Today, canā€™t see him doing weather on any of the Nine News bulletins though.

Tim Arvier named 2020 Journalist of the Year

9News reporter Tim Arvier was named 2020 Journalist of the Year at last nightā€™s Queensland Clarion Awards.

Arvier also claimed two other awards: the Clarion Award for best Broadcast Interview for ā€œLive Reporting in Minneapolisā€, broadcast nationally on 9News and TODAY, and the Clarion Award for best TV News Report for ā€œMinneapolis Burningā€, seen on 9News and TODAY.

ā€œMinneapolis Burningā€ formed part of an extraordinary week of TV news reporting from Minneapolis as civil unrest spread across the city after the killing of George Floyd in police custody. On the first morning, as police responded to a stabbing, Arvier and his cameraman were the only local or international news team who remained live on-air and on the scene as demonstrators clashed with police.

Posted online, his first two days of live and packaged reports have been viewed more than 40 million times and were of international significance.

ā€œItā€™s an honour to be named ā€˜Journalist of the Yearā€™ among so many outstanding and deserving nominees. Having the opportunity to cover such a momentous story, alongside an incredible cameraman in Adam Bovino, was certainly a privilege and something I will never forget,ā€ Arvier said.

9News and TODAY reporter Jessica Millward was nominated alongside Arvier in the Broadcast Interview category for her story ā€œLive Reporting in the Exclusion Zoneā€, broadcast on 9News and TODAY.

Additionally, 9News Queensland was nominated for the Clarion Award for TV News Report for its story ā€œHannah Clarkeā€.

9News Queenslandā€™s Director of News, Amanda Paterson, said: ā€œIā€™m extremely proud of Tim and his efforts in bringing Queenslanders, and the nation, some of the most captivating live reporting Iā€™ve ever seen. These awards are a testament to Timā€™s journalistic excellence in garnering the eyes of a nation.

ā€œHis fellow nominees, Jess Millward and the 9News Queensland team, should also be immensely proud of their achievements in reinforcing 9News as the premier news source in Queensland.ā€

The annual Queensland Clarion Awards are the pre-eminent, state-based awards promoting excellence in the Australian media.
