Nine news director Darren Wick has confirmed he is in talks with Probyn about joining Nine, describing the reporter as a good news breaker. “He is a big personality but we can handle big personalities: we had Laurie Oakes and Chris Uhlmann”, Wick told Weekly Beast at an industry conference this week.

Don’t know how speculative it is, but very interested when they stated that 9 wanted to build a studio that would rival sky news Australia.

21/7/2023 Kate Creedon is presenting weather in Sydney tonight (and presumably tomorrow night as well).

She did weather on the Sydney 4pm bulletin too.

Good to see they’re utilising talent.

Why are you replying to a post made 20 days ago about a different fill in presenter?

Aislin’s first 6pm read?

I’m going to guess that they’re looking to have Probyn as the ‘Nine Entertainment Political Editor’ who looks after the entire Canberra bureau with Croucher, David Crowe and Phillip Coorey leading Nine News, SMH, and AFR respectively.

There has been further discussion on the future of Nine’s Melbourne presenter in the newspapers this week, tonight in The Australian. The article includes some analysis on how Nine News lead by Peter Hitchener from Monday to Thursday has declined by 11% from the same period last year, and the story is just as bleak for Alicia Loxley from Fridays to Sundays.

Nine’s declining ratings in Melbourne over the last 12-18 months does make me wonder whether they still have faith to hand the weeknight slot to Alicia when Hitch retires. Could they play it safe and give it to Tony Jones?

Alicia and Tony are both weak presenters to take that challenge, they need someone else.

That doesn’t sound safe to me.

If they were getting cold feet about Alicia, I think Brett McLeod would be a “safer” choice than TJ?

Tony Jones is definitely not play it safe. If anything he’d probably shed ratings even more in the long-term.

Alicia is fine, otherwise Brett or they’ll need to poach a high profile talent.

I think the problem isn’t with Nine, but more so a resurgent Seven that makes Nine look bad by increasing their numbers through a number a different factors.

Agreed, and yes it’s clearly the lead-in that’s the issue.

If there is going to be speculation about Nine News numbers being down 12% in Melbourne, I wonder what that means for Sydney and Adelaide where they are down 18% for the calendar year Mon-Fri.

Also note that Melbourne is “only” down 7% for the survey period.

Honestly.

They are never going to push Hitch based on ‘alleged declined ratings’. Just let it be.

Surprised Nine Adelaide hasn’t made any inroads with the retirement of Jane Doyle on 7 News. Adelaide seems to be like Perth and have their remotes permanently stuck on 7.
