Nine News Local

Hasn’t Jo been producing one story a week for the state bulletin on weekends?

Currently she does one for weeknights and one for weekend bulletin.

If a full hour bulletin is recorded from sometime about 4:00 ish to 5:00 ish, then shown at 6:00, then it’s not really news and not able to have the breaking news that Dalton claims it will contain. Some of the Qld news will need to be recorded earlier than that.

Jo Hall was on ABC Victoria this afternoon talking to Nicole … At least 8 minutes of local news each night into each market … Pre-Recorded inserts late afternoon.

So basically - Jo is presenting a state wide bulletin for the SCA Nine regionals.

To me - correct me if I’m wrong - all of the markets currently have SCA radio facilities - colocation - add in an editor, cameraman, and reporter - bureau done … or as Jo described it, ‘mini-bureau’.

That’s pathetic. Hardly worth bothering.

Nearly. SCA don’t have radio stations in Ballarat, Sunshine Coast or Wollongong/South Coast NSW. Though they do have sales offices for TV in those areas so will probably have the space still.

It will be interesting to see what they do in Gippsland. Their station there is in Warragul, which isn’t the best location to get good coverage of the whole TV market - Traralgon would be a better location to base the journos and is also where the majority of other media in the region is. SCA have previously had a sales office in Traralgon, but I don’t believe they do currently.

I’m wondering, how does this:

differ from what Nine will be doing in the other QLD markets with the new regional bulletins?

Won’t they have newsrooms in every regional QLD city?

Townsville is fairly central. Not as far north as Cairns and not as far south as other centres. I’m guessing its location would be advantageous for news gathering, because it’s a shorter distance north-south.

You realise that article is from July, before we knew a lot of what we do now about Nine and SCA’s plans?

So will this mean that Shepparton viewers will now get the Albury feed of SC9, and SC will not have a reporter or anything in Shepparton at all? This will no doubt mean WIN (the successor to Shepparton’s original TV station) will capitalise on this saying “Shepparton and the Goulburn Valley’s ONLY TRULY local news - WIN NEWS”. And Prime7’s Albury bulletin is not relayed into Shepparton.

What Jo Hall has said doesn’t auger very well in my view…

Yes, 8 minutes isn’t enough… it’s about on par with what NBN does, and also sounds like viewers are likely to miss out on the ‘live’ crosses to Nine reporters for the latest that couldn’t be incorporated into a pre packaged report. I think that is a KEY part of a news bulletin these days - it shouldn’t be solely about pre packaged reports anymore.

Using the NBN example, I find Nine Sydney News much easier to watch than NBN News. Some of that is exacerbated by the NBN cover ups and dodgy theme music, but also that Peter Overton comes across as far more authoritative on major news items than the NBN presenters do.

Personally, I would prefer separate local bulletins in place of ‘A Current Affair’ (ala the WIN model). I understand the point about capital city centric news being irrelevant, but then keep in mind that the ABC does this too, even as a state bulletin.

If Nine continued relaying the Sydney News to southern NSW, the 8 minutes could fit in after the first sports report just before 6:30 ish, and the regionals could rejoin for the full sports news. If this new regional news fails, maybe they will revert to an insert into the capital city bulletin anyway

They’ll likely keep separate feeds so that ads can still be localised, but yes, the news will be the same.
I wouldn’t be surprised if they still had a journo and cammo based in Shepparton to contribute to the bulletin.

Disappointing that Geelong is left out of this, even though Geelong is covered by GTV.

A separate feed would not be that costly.

But doesn’t Gold Coast have a special licence for the Brisbane stations to be able to have a separate feed?

The Gold Coast is still under QTQ but runs a separate feed to transmitters in the GC area.
IIRC, Nine got permission from the ACMA to run another feed to GC.

There is one high powered transmitter in Geelong and a medium powered transmitter in Angelsea.

I also remember there was a proposed transmitter in Ocean Grove in around 2010 that was going to be covered by GTV but the site is now apartments.

A VJ in Geelong would be a good start…

The Geelong transmitter is in an SFN with other Melbourne infills so it wouldn’t be possible to split the signal.

It’s better than nothing, is it not?

…and better than the current efforts (or lack of it) at local news content on SCA Nine, is it not?

As much as I can understand why some are upset about losing the capital city Nine News 6pm bulletins, I think viewers will probably be better served by a composite bulletin just for regional areas in the long run. Those really wanting to watch Nine News as it’s seen in Sydney will probably still be able to get their fix online anyway.
