Here in the bush there is no such thing as decent internet speed
Yes, eight minutes of local news is better than nothing but they can hardly claim to have the premier local news service when WIN and Prime, in select areas, is currently producing so much more. The personnel Nine has allocated to produce that content in regional areas will be stretched to the limit but the competitive nature of journalism will mean theyâll have no problem attracting young talent keen to do it and prove their worth.
I just donât see the need for them to duplicate the rest of the bulletin when eight minutes of local content can easily be inserted into existing state bulletins. The block after sport would be ideal. Regional viewers will end up getting inferior coverage of breaking news stories because the city bulletins will always be Nineâs priority.
The logistics associated with getting these extra bulletins to air will prove too difficult. I predict these one hour regional bulletins wonât last. You can bet if they start effecting the quality of the city bulletins and their ability to get those to air in a seamless fashion, theyâll be dropped very quickly in favour of local news inserts.
Absolutely loads of positions going at Nine News advertised in the papers today. Positions in all markets. Funnily enough, nothing about northern NSW where theyâll no doubt just keep plodding along.
NNSW has NBN doing exactly this, so no need to advertise for there.
I donât see it as people will get an inferior bulletin.
8 minutes might be purely local - hopefully in time they will expand it to 10-12 minutes. I would say itâs 8 minutes local news, plus youâve got the local weather - another 5 minutes or so.
If you watch say 9 News Sydney - how much of it is purely Sydney local news. That is - not state politics, not NRL etc - which has appeal and interest beyond Sydney - not a Sydney story that is big enough to go national. But purely local Sydney news. Would it be 15 minutes of purely local Sydney news?
Also, it is really sounding like it will be one bulletin for each state, with the local windows.
For example in NSW, the way I see it is one state (well SNSW) bulletin going out live at 6. It will open with the biggest news of the day, say Trump winning, the assulym seekers in Nauru, the earthquake in NZ, state politics, bushfires etc. Probably about 10 minutes in we will go to the local windows:
One for each:
Canberra,
Wollongong
Wagga
Central West
Canberra will be live, the others will be pre-recored between 530-6pm ready to roll in
Hopefully too, â9 News NSWâ or whatever it is called will be able to cross live to 9 News reporters - so if Nine has a reporter State Parliament or Canberra, TCN can cross to them between 6.02-6.05 and 9 News NSW could cross to them at 6.12pm (Iâm making times up, but you get the idea)
If the hour is live - and uses reporters in the field it would be great
Whilst Nine is undertaking something big here - the 120 staff they announced will mange this. I would be really surprised if Nine lets this affect (in ANY way at all) the quality of the flagship Sydney news. That is still where the big bucks are.
The Jobs are also on Seek.
As for the question of whether or not those 8 minutes of local news is enough, we still donât know whether that 8 minutes refers to the time allocated for all local content (including Sport & Weather) or just news reports & RVOs. If itâs the latter, then 8 minutes of local news is more or less equivalent to the first block of a 30 minute local-only news bulletin isnât it?
It would be a lie to say that the âtraditionalâ format of a purely local 30 minute news bulletin doesnât have itâs flaws because after the important stories are covered, the likes of Prime7 and WIN generally resort to doing stories that are probably better left for the local newspapers or non-local/generic regional items to fill a 30 minute bulletin as it is now. Just as long as the most important local news stories are covered, then I think that viewers will eventually get used to watching the new regional versions of Nine News.
I have little doubt that Nineâs new regional bulletins will include the most important/relevant stories from the capital city 6pm news like state politics or happenings in the AFL/NRL which have viewer appeal across the entire state. Iâm also sure that the Sydney/Melbourne/Brisbane stories that are big enough to make national (or very occasionally, even international) news will be covered by the regional bulletins as well. Reports on a massive traffic pileup on the M5, suburban shootings, major developments in Sydneyâs West, etc - those are the type of reports that have little to no interest/relevance to viewers in Wagga, Dubbo or Bathurst.
9 News Canberra and 9 News Wollongong launch in just 2 months. Shouldnât we be seeing some promos and social media pages soon to promote the launch?
A massive multi million dollar news investment like this needs a huge marketing push
they havenât finished hiring yet.
That makes no difference to marketing
Iâd expect it to be something like a promo period of 4 weeks prior to launch, so they should start popping up early in the new year.
I agree that weâll most likely see promos airing for the new regional bulletins early in the new year, possibly coinciding with a major promo launch for the metropolitan Nine News bulletins?
Afterall, Nine News in metro areas (certainly here in Sydney at least anyway) hasnât really done anything new/different with their promos for a while now (newer graphics aside) when theyâve been known to constantly refresh their promotional style in the past.
actually it does. Footage from reporters and cameramen used in promos from the relevant regions, promos featuring new reporters etc.
@DJPizarro marketing can be online, on radio, on social, on air. And who said tv promos need footage of reporters? That would be a few shots in one idea/execution of creative. There are dozens of other spots and creative to launch a news service. Iâve seen literally hundreds of news promos promoting a stations news services that donât feature footage of reporters.
They can use graphics, hosts, green screen, current 9
News sets. Shoot on location. Shoot talent in studios. Put graphics behind them in green screen. Use file vision. Buy Getty images vision or aerial shots of cities and locations. Literally dozens or ways to skin the cat.
Literally a teaser or something would be something worthwhile.
âComing soon to 9 insert region here - your new local voice. For further details, visit 9local.com.auâ
Have a website explaining the new news service to viewers.
Spot on!
âCanberra - in 2017 a news revolution is coming. A brand new live news service just for the Capital. 9 News Canberra is coming. Go to 9local.com.au for moreâ
Remember the last time we had that lol
Continue the promo like so
Canberra - in 2017 a news revolution is coming. A brand new live news service just for the Capital. 9 News Canberra is coming.
Then at 7pm, a regional Australian first - ACA with Tracey Grimshaw. We look into the stories that affect you and take the time to tell them (said by Tracey).
Whatever time you get home, Nineâs got your news covered.
Except it isnât a âfirstâ. WIN had ACA at 7.00 for years before they shifted local news to 7.00 which IIRC only happened a couple of years ago.
Yeah I know that haha it was more of a dig at Win and Tenâs 6PM with George Negus.
Herald Sun says Sonia Marinelli will return from maternity leave next year to present weather on Nine News Regionalâs Victorian bulletins. With Jo Hall reading the bulletin, it is like Mark II of Nine News Melbourne.
