Lighting in Melbourne looks very odd tonight . Any idea why?

EDIT: just mid sentence of Pete presenting the brightness went up further. Seems as though the close up camera is having CCU issues tonight.

Nine News Sydney has hit back at Seven News’ use of the “Australia’s No. 1” tagline in their latest promos airing in Sydney:

Even though Nine News Sydney has won the 2016 ratings year, personally I think the timing for them to use the “Sydney’s Number 1” line again is rather questionable knowing that Seven News Sydney will most likely win this week (all due to the Olympics I know, but still…) in the ratings.

NINE NEWS APPOINTMENTS

Darren Wick, Nine Network Director of News and Current Affairs, today announced two major appointments within the management team at Nine News.

Amanda Paterson is to become the Queensland News Director.

Mike Dalton will move into a new position as the Head of Nine News Regional.

Amanda Paterson began her television career as a 19-year-old reporter, recruited from the University of Southern Queensland to join the Extra program at the Nine Network in Brisbane. She subsequently moved to A Current Affair, working as an investigative reporter in Melbourne and Brisbane, before being appointed as the program’s Queensland Bureau Chief, a position she has held for the past eight years.

Paterson has been a three-time Walkley Award finalist for her reporting and a multi-award winner at the prestigious Queensland Media Awards, including the Investigative Report of the Year, after revealing a high-flying business millionaire to be a sexual predator. Other acclaimed reports include an investigation into medical negligence at a major hospital; exposing the national sporting coach who resigned after an improper relationship with a young athlete; and the killer who confessed to her on camera, forcing police to reopen a cold case and ending with him being jailed for 26 years.

As Queensland Bureau Chief at ACA, Paterson has rebuilt the team into an outstanding chase and investigative unit, and steered them to a series of annual ratings wins in one of Australia’s most intensely competitive markets.

She has mentored and driven a new generation of reporters and producers within the Nine Network. Her tenacity, passion and commitment to journalism is contagious.

Born and bred in Brisbane, she is the best person to lead the successful Queensland News team into the future and maintain the trust of viewers and the integrity of the Nine News brand.

Mike Dalton is undertaking one of the most exciting challenges in the history of Nine News, after five years as Queensland News Director.

As the first Head of Nine News Regional, in this new role Dalton will build a regional television network for Nine News from the ground up. He will work closely with our affiliate partners, Southern Cross Austereo, to establish news bulletins and newsrooms in all major East Coast regional markets. This is an enormous undertaking and commitment to regional Australia.

Dalton has more than 30 years of television experience in metropolitan and regional markets across Australia. Born and bred at Burleigh Heads on the Gold Coast, he has been based everywhere from Darwin to Dee Why.

He has been one of the most accomplished Chiefs of Staff at Nine News in Sydney, working with the legendary newsreader Brian Henderson and the current Number 1 team of Peter Overton and Ken Sutcliffe.

In 2011, he took over the reins of Nine News Queensland.

Under his news direction the standard of the bulletin, the morale of the staff and the ratings all lifted substantially. With the team led by Melissa Downes and Andrew Lofthouse, Nine News Brisbane soon regained the Number 1 spot in the 6.00pm timeslot, where it remains today, as well as being Number 1 in the competitive daytime news market, with bulletins read by Eva Milic.

This year Dalton has overseen the relaunch of Nine News Gold Coast, with Bruce Paige and Wendy Kingston, where it retains the market leader position after 20 years of serving viewers on the Coast.

Both of these appointments take effect from Monday, August 29.

If it’s all major East Coast markets, then NBN in northern NSW will be included you would think?

At the moment, NBN/Nine is still positioning NBN News as being separate from Nine News as far as I can tell (eg, community service projects that were previously sponsored by NBN Television are now sponsored by NBN News) but with the station basically branding itself as Channel Nine outside of news as of July 1, I think the long term goal would be to bring NBN News into the Nine News family.

Like the rest of the network, I think it’s pretty clear that Nine News has a strong desire to build a brand that is as strong (if not stronger, of course) regionally as Seven News and it’s affiliated services currently are in regional Australia. Over the next 6-12 months or so, I would not be terribly surprised if Nine try to get familiar reporters and perhaps even presenters from existing regional news services to move over to Nine as it establishes new regional news services which knowing the network, will undoubtedly be launched with a blaze of publicity.

It would make sense that NBN would fall under “Head of Nine News Regional” since it’s a regional market, but since they already have existing news operations that doesn’t necessarily mean there will be any changes there. Despite the strong speculation, this would be the first real confirmation that Nine are going to producing local news for SCA.

Why aren’t 9 news using modified supers for Rio 2016 just like other networks?

Nine used to do it in previous years

Maybe they feel that the customised transition graphic is enough?

“Sam Cucchiara, NBN News” sign off on 6pm Queensland News tonight. Oops!

Would that have been an editing problem as he possibly reports for both Nine and NBN?

Sam Cucchiara is based on the Gold Coast and indeed reports for both Nine and NBN. I’m guessing that someone at QTQ must’ve edited out the wrong report signoff!

Despite strong Olympics lead-in, Nine News Sydney can still beat Seven News Sydney - the first time the broadcaster of the Olympics has had its news bulletin beaten in Sydney.

The post-Olympics news ratings should be very interesting, that’s for sure.

Although I personally won’t be surprised if Seven’s recent ratings success is purely Olympics related with viewer habits going back to normal after the games are over. If anything, I wouldn’t be too surprised if Nine News Sydney gets a ratings boost in coming weeks especially with NRL finals just around the corner…

Thanks for posting. Yeah that would be the reason. Obviously sent the wrong version up the pipe.

occasionally on NBN we get the “Nine Gold Coast News” signoff… but it’s rare these days.
