Excellent.

Do we know when this is? Has there been anymore updates on first airdates in their new home yet?

Good… prefect host to do it too.

Yeah, I’m almost certain they’ll get Brady Halls and Mike Dalton to do a piece or two about the move from Willoughby to North Sydney on ACA and Nine News respectively.

I personally would’ve thought Brian Henderson is the perfect host for a “Farewell to TCN-9 Willoughby” special, however he (quite understandably) would’ve been unavailable at this particular point in time for obvious reasons!

Regardless of the host, its good that Nine seemingly has plans to mark the end of their Willoughby studios with a full special.

ACA will be the first program to broadcast out of North Sydney
Tonight. Bit of a historical moment for tv tonight.

To be honest, I actually think a promotional tactic like this would be a better one for the Nine Entertainment Company to adopt in a wide campaign for all of their news properties - particularly a Sydney & Melbourne perspective where you could do something which shows how NEC media is a part of a city’s day from the moment they wake up to the moment they go to bed.

There’s something quite strong about the idea of a promo which starts in the early hours of the morning where a copy of the SMH/Age is delivered to someone’s house which is on the table at breakfast while Today is on the television screen. This would likely be followed by scenes of the morning/afternoon commute where the radio is on 2GB/3AW in the car, midday radio news on at work, arriving home to Nine News with Peter Overton/Hitchener…you get the idea.

Of course, along with the promos featuring all properties such a campaign would likely include individual ads/promos for the newspapers (including the websites and apps, etc.), radio stations (including radio news bulletins) and Nine News which in some way or another, would tie-in with each other and include a common slogan such as “Sydney’s news lives here” or maybe even something like “Sydney’s 24 hour news source” to give the “Australia’s most trusted” ABC News promos a run for their money.

No doubt such an idea would be expensive and yes, of course some unique branding elements to each media property like the logos should remain. SMH and The Age have had their logos for as long as everyone can remember and then some, so I wouldn’t recommend changing those. But in the long run, I think it’d make more sense to have a wider promotional strategy for the news-related properties which all point to the same tagline than continue a tradition of completely individual approaches.

Matt James appointed Managing Director of Nine Melbourne

Matt-James--300x180

Senior global media agency executive Matt James is returning to Nine as Managing Director – Nine Melbourne.

James has recently returned from London where he was global CEO of leading media agency network Zenith Media. Before that he held senior media roles as Australian CEO of Publicis Media and CEO of Zenith Australia.

He will oversee Nine’s second largest market, which includes Channel 9 in Melbourne, 3AW, The Age and the Melbourne bureau of The Australian Financial Review. Melbourne is also the home of many of Nine’s key TV productions, including The Block, LEGO Masters and Millionaire Hot Seat.

James will report to Lizzie Young, Nine’s managing director – local markets & group marketing.

“Melbourne is one of our key opportunities and Matt’s experience in driving growth for brands will be incredibly important as we consolidate the Nine Melbourne proposition locally and build on our offering for consumers and clients with the greatest brands in the market,” Young said.

“Having someone of Matt’s calibre – with his broad experience on both the media owner and agency side – is a strong addition to our state-based leadership team.”

The Melbourne appointment is a return to Nine for James, who left the group in 2015 to move agency-side to Publicis after holding senior roles including group director of Nine’s client solutions division, Powered, and managing director of its digital media division.

“I am absolutely thrilled to be returning to the Nine family and privileged to be joining what I know is a very passionate, dedicated and dynamic team in Victoria,” he said. “Nine continues to be the most progressive, expansive and transformative media company in Australia and I’m excited at the opportunity to be part of its continuing success for 2021 and beyond.”

Matt James will commence in his new role on November 18.

In the light of Nine moving to North Sydney, has there been any indications of Blake Street Darwin being sold?

The site was valued for millions of dollars and it’s been sitting there rotting. I believe a maintenance man frequently visits and some work was undertaken inside just before the local bulletin was relaunched.

A residential development - which was set to take place - has been rejected by the government (NT residents don’t like new things). This would’ve had an impact as the developer was looking to purchase the site as they also own 4 Blake Street.

There hasn’t been any auctions or sales of the goods inside the building either. It’s full of Channel 8/9 tapes, history and all that broadcasting tech from local production days. The main studio remained in a operational state until they moved out in December 2019 - the Mitchell Street studio received new technology instead of carrying it over.

There are a chunk of Eight National News and National Nine News Darwin scripts and Betacam SP, Digital Betacam and U-matic tapes from the mid 1980s to about 2010 at the NFSA. Hopefully whatever is at the old Darwin building also ends up at the NFSA.

Some of the tapes from around 2009/10 are from Imparja, being described on the NFSA collection database as the Imparja News Hour, which comprised the two half hour Nine news bulletins from Brisbane and Darwin.

There is rooms, rooms and rooms of tapes and historic items within the Blake Street building. I believe NTD have the ability to digitize them when they need them but they mostly sit there in the archival. There are also tapes from previous local programs from the 70-80s, I hope they end up at NFSA.

There is also heaps of Channel 8 signage and branding around the place as-well-as the previous Nine News studio (They replaced and took the screen to Mitchell Street, nothing else).

Blake Street is almost like walking into a time capsule. It’s a big building with a ton of stuff lol.

Hugh Marks has announced today he is stepping down as CEO of Nine Entertainment Co.

Mr Marks told staff in an email on Saturday afternoon that he was resigning and the television, radio and digital company would commence a formal process for his replacement. He did not got into detail about why he was leaving.

“I want to take this opportunity to tell you what a privilege it has been leading this business over a truly transformational period for both the media market generally, and particularly our business.

“We have gone from being three separate, legacy media businesses in Nine, Fairfax Media and Macquarie Media, each with their own structural challenges, and created a business that now has a diversified revenue base across both advertising and subscription, and that has a clear growth strategy for decades to come.

“We have demonstrated the importance of great content, be that in the powerful and unique journalism we create every day, across all platforms, or in entertainment, where the shows we build become household names and engage Australians in their millions. Because at the end of the day, we are, and will remain, a content business.”

His resignation also coincides with industry speculation and reporting about his relationships with colleagues.
