Nine Entertainment Co

Which got a run in Andrew Hornery’s recent column

Hornery always manages to get people to speak. He is a good gossip columnist as he never (to my knowledge) writes fiction parading as fact.

Wow - that is a stunning announcement (talking just at a ‘face value’ level - not going to delve into why it did/didn’t happen).

Marks’ impact on Nine will be felt for decades to come considering he spearheaded initiatives such as launching Stan, initiating the Fairfax merger and buying Macquarie Media - all of which have solidified Nine as a dominant player in the Australia media landscape.

Having said that, the obvious questions are now a) Who will replace him and b) How that could change Nine’s strategy moving forward

Especially considering the timing of it - just a week (if recent comments are anything to go by) before the television side of Nine Sydney is expected to complete the transition from Willoughby to North Sydney!

The resignation comes after a rushed Saturday board meeting. It also comes after details of his private life were revealed in the company’s Sydney Morning Herald on Saturday. There is speculation further detail about Marks and his relationships will be detailed in The Sunday Telegraph this weekend.

Big loss. He’s done a lot for the company. Whoever succeeds him will have big shoes to fill.

Good to see that the SMH still has some editorial freedom, evidently.

Yes and no. The move to Sydney would have happened regardless. It’s not his “legacy” I wouldn’t really correlate the two. He’s already there.

It’s just a building move, yes it’s a big moment, but Nine was never going to be at willoughby for ever. Talks and ideas of selling go back to the Gyngell time.

Surprised by Marks’ announcement of his resignation today. Why didn’t he wait until after Nine has completed its relocation to North Sydney?
He achieved so much during his tenure at Nine.

If Costello and rest of the board forced his resignation (?) then he had no choice - leave voluntarily or be fired.

I’m not understanding the issue here. Hugh is in a relationship? So? Why does that mean he has to quit?

According to this article from the Herald Sun, his relationship with the Nine Board became strained after the relationship came out.

Just insane. Can’t people be adults here? “The board” need to get over themselves.

Newscorp:

Powerful Nine CEO Hugh Marks has resigned from his role as head of the $4 billion media company after being forced to confirm his relationship with a junior female executive.

Doesn’t matter…you do anything that goes against “their” concept of acceptable and you’re gone. Doesn’t just happen at the top either.
