Nine Cricket Coverage

THE ASHES

From Thursday 1 August at 7.30pm AEST

ALL GAMES LIVE, EXCLUSIVE AND IN HD

The oldest rivalry in Australian sport reignites this Thursday August 1st at 7.30pm AEST , when The Ashes returns home to Nine.

All five Test matches between Australia and England will be LIVE, EXCLUSIVE and in HD during primetime on Nine and 9GEM ( varies by state - check guides for details), and streamed live on 9Now.

The Australian men’s side head over to England as the current keepers of The Urn, having defeated England on home soil in 2017. They will be looking to replicate the success of the superstar women’s side who this week secured an emphatic victory over their English counterparts.

With the likes of Steve Smith, David Warner, Pat Cummins and Mitchell Starc in the side, Australia will be brimming with confidence and self-belief.

Tensions will be high, and they will be itching to gain a measure of revenge against a formidable English side who ended Australia’s World Cup dream only weeks ago. The home side will be hungry to continue their success with a squad which includes world class players in Joe Root, Jonny Bairstow, Ben Stokes and veteran Jimmy Anderson .

Hosting Nine’s coverage will be Australian sporting legend Todd Woodbridge , alongside former Australian men’s captain Mark Taylor, former Australian women’s captains Melanie Jones and Lisa Sthalekar , and Aussie wicket-keeping great, Ian Healy .

“Like most Australians, I grew up watching the cricket on our screens every year”, said Woodbridge. “Hosting something as iconic as The Ashes is a real privilege, and I can’t wait to work with some of the legends of Aussie cricket.”

Commentary will be provided by a collection of heavyweights of world cricket, such as Aussie and English stars Shane Warne, Ricky Ponting , Michael Atherton, David Lloyd, Isa Guha and more.

The 2019 series is highly anticipated among fans and analysts, who expect a much closer contest than in previous series given the talent on offer.

Mark Taylor, an Ashes-winning former captain of the Australian side, feels the series will be tight in 2019. “Both sides are filled with match winners, but I think the Aussies could have enough firepower to get them over the line this year and retain The Urn”, said Taylor. “It’s shaping up to be a brilliant series.”

Former Australian women’s captain Mel Jones – also no stranger to Ashes success – said, “Justin Langer’s first Ashes series as coach, Tim Paine’s as captain. Fresh, new faces for the oldest of competitions. This series will uncover new Australian heroes and reaffirm old ones as they take on the old foe on away soil.”

The five Test matches will continue over August and September:

4 different hosts presenting Nine’s mid year cricket coverage.
First Bec, then Clint Stanaway (when Bec is in GC for Logies), James Bracey And Now Todd. Yikes!

Hope NBN get around to doing this for the Ashes

What about Alicia Muling or doesn’t she count?
I’m also fairly certain Nine used a 2 person team for at least one of the World Cup games where either Taylor or Sthalekar hosted.
Doesn’t really matter who is hosting personally.

yeah Im pretty sure that was the second night of the Semi Final India v NZ

I reckon Channel 9 will host from England because Melanie Jones is still in England so I reckon they will talk similar to World Cup except with In ground coverage and then bring you down to Sky.

The Channel 9 panel definitely won’t be in England - they’ll be hosting from the Sydney/Melbourne WWOS studio and taking Sky’s feed for match play. They may do live crosses to Mel Jones on the ground if she’s remaining in England for the series.

On another note, great to see Nine take the Fox Cricket approach to coverage with no ads during the innings (plenty at the innings break) in the Women’s T20 tonight!

Sounds like they perhaps didn’t get the advertiser interest they normally do? A costly exercise otherwise.

I’ll just the radio on if they go over to Sky Sports and then when they return to studio I will unmute the TV

I quite liked Sky’s coverage of the last Ashes series in England. They have a more even representation of home and away team commentators than what Nine ever did.

I had recorded the cricket to watch today.
Was exactly 10 minutes of commercials in between innings!

I honestly think Sky have the one of the best assortment of commentators in world cricket coverage and their graphics are very clean.

I think Channel 9 refused ads in the Women’s T20 because Sky Sports often keep on talking at the end of the over

Is there any chance still of GEM going to be in HD in Canberra for the Ashes? (I have heard this will not be the case). If not, will it be HD on the 9now website?

Yes.

It generally takes at least a few months for regional broadcasters to upgrade their facilities in order to be able to provide a local version of 9GEM HD to each market, as was the case with the 4-5 month wait for 9HD to be rolled out.

Will Rebecca Maddern and James Bracey be involved?

Nope, Todd Woodbridge is hosting as noted in a few posts up.

My point obviously being anyone know if Bec and/or James will be hosting along with Todd? But I take it, no.

I would have though that James Bracey will continue doing hosting NRL coverage on thursdays and Sundays. As well as this, Saturday Night NRL will come to Nine next Saturday. If Woodbridge and Bracey are unavailable, then Maddern will be used for Test coverage.
