Nine Cricket Coverage

I’ve edited that now, I was referring to the Grand Final/Brownlow which are exclusive to 7 and restricted to certain platforms on 7+.

I seem to recall Nine showing a classic match during a rain delay in the last away Ashes series. I think it may have been the Amazing Adelaide Test.

I was surprised to see it because I also thought that Fox had the rights to all of the archive content even though Nine broadcasted it.

Even if you do have an antenna Foxtel give Gem a channel number of 164/264, wonder how many people would find that easily.

I feel like Nine have the rights to whatever they broadcast prior to a specific time, however they can’t play the footage on TV outside of match broadcasts of that sport (other than highlights/flashbacks in sports programs like Sports Sunday).

This is what happened when Nine/Ten had the cricket rights. They had cross promotion of the cricket, which is why it was so successful.

Fox and seven don’t have that same relationship, never will, never had.

I produce and print out a weekly guide of sport events of interest in my household and the channel number or app they’ll be on, mainly for the benefit of other household members who would never find the events they want to see otherwise. I made myself a cheat sheet of Foxtel’s eclectic FTA channel numbers because I could never remember them. The only time I don’t need it is if I’m copying/pasting an event from the previous week on the same channel.

So yes, if someone like me who frequents this forum can’t remember, average viewers probably have no chance.

Local radar looks to be clear of rain this morning for the test but later, not so good.

If it rains later in the day, they may have to start earlier the next morning to make up for the lost overs. And I don’t think 9 will be too unhappy with that as it means an extra 30 mins in prime time.

30min into D2 of coverage (without rain yet) and social media has spoken…

That’s because the contracts over there are much more watertight about the NFL, NBA etc having editorial control over their equivalent of “siren to siren” [focusing on national broadcasts here, not regional ones where the team sells the rights]. Hence the two NBA partners showing the national schedule at least once a game, as you say.

That’s as much a function of how big those sports juggernauts are though. It rarely works that way outside of the US, I suspect.

Usual idiots among those comments.

And the unsurprising case [in the last of those tweets] of some people dumping the blame on channel 9 (because that’s what they see on screen) when they just as much have WIN (I assume) to blame for being tardy with switching on HD on Gem.

Though this is what the metro networks have to wear if they get regional networks to use their name. At least Seven has control of theirs, and I guess Nine a small sliver of theirs.

This week sees the Women’s Ashes also on Nine, but are being kept on m/c (9Gem) possibly due to perceived low ratings and/or as the men’s was the same for a large part. However, due to NRL, it’ll move to 9Go! (SD only on broadcast) in Melbourne, Adelaide and Perth on Thursday and Friday and as a result some movies will be pushed back or pre empted.

Seems a little strange that they’d have an umpteenth re-run of 2007 psychological thriller “Fracture” with Anthony Hopkins and Ryan Gosling on the main channel in AFL markets, while buying women’s cricket on 9Go! as NRL is on Gem. I’d think the cricket would still be a chance of rating higher than both of those. Despite yes Seven’s AFL.

Nine didn’t direct viewers to watch 10’s Big Bash coverage and likewise 10 didn’t promote Nine’s coverage in the manner we see for US sport.

Nine will be keen to get the rights to the 2027 Ashes tour of England ASAP, before Seven or 10 or Foxtel shows any interest, given the excellent ratings on 9Gem (mostly) for the first Ashes test. To me, Nine wants to continue to show the Ashes tour indefinitely to attract sports fans, even though it doesn’t have the rights to home internationals in Australia.

Also, I think Nine is only interested in the Ashes tour, leaving Australia’s other overseas cricket tours to Foxtel.

They will want Stan rights as well for it, which will mean 4K and ad-free coverage.

I don’t understand why they couldn’t do this now. They have exclusive rights covering Free/Pay/IP.

I’m a little surprised free to air haven’t shown more interest in the Indian tests … they are extremely competitive and falls in prime time viewing for eastern states.
